A Message from the president

Welcome back SIBR!  I hope that you all had a wonderful summer.  I am so excited about serving as your president for the next two years.

We all had a wonderful time at our resurrected Brewfest in June.  We were extremely lucky to have mild weather that day!  Thank you’s go out to Gayle and Yvette for killing it on the raffle!  Giant thank you to our title sponsor - Coco and Ian with Butte Creek BBQ.  We couldn’t have pulled it off without your wonderful food.  Also, thank you to the Brewfest committee -Sheron, Babette, Linda, and Maxine.  Hours upon hours of prepwork went into this event and we all appreciate you.  And,of course, thank you to all members who donated raffle prizes, attended the event, and worked hard all day!  Although our ticket sales were not as high as we were hoping, we still managed to make a profit and ended up having a successful year in fundraising.

Babette and I attended a vision boarding session in July up at the Enjoy Store in Red Bluff with SI/ Red Bluff.  It was great to meet up and share ideas with another club in our region.

In August, seven of our members attended the Soroptimist Development Retreat in Reno.  It was a really nice event.  I encourage any of you to attend this one next year, the workshops are fantastic and it is a lot of fun to collaborate with members from other clubs.

Our club retreat was held on August 22 at Butte Creek BBQ’s event room.  Thank you to Coco for providing the event space and for the great spread!  We brainstormed ideas based on the Four Pillars, did the Rose, Thorn, and Bud exercise, and looked at our upcoming calendar.  We have a lot of things on the calendar for this year… I hope you are ready to jump right in!

We return to Nash’s on September 12 for our first business meeting.  At this meeting, we will discuss the upcoming District 1 Fall meeting on October 7, 2023.  This will be hosted by SI/ Downtown Redding at St. James Lutheren Church in Redding.  I will send out the registration information via email.

Thank you for volunteering,

Marie

MAUI WILDFIRES
Whenever a Soroptimist hears of a struggle or natural disaster within our Soroptimist community, “what can I do to help?”, always comes to mind immediately. Whipped by winds from Hurricane Dora hundreds of miles offshore, fast-moving wildfires wiped out entire neighborhoods, burned historic landmarks to the ground and displaced thousands. The death toll from the Maui wildfires has climbed to at least 93, surpassing the Camp Fire by 8, making it now the deadliest US wildfire. I have reached out to Founder Region Governor Vicki regarding any plan there may be to help now, in this chaotic time of the disaster, or during the recovery, which is hard to think about right now, but will come.
It was almost prophetic that my club, SI Bidwell Rancho-Chico was the official coordinator for our Sierra Nevada region efforts for Hurricane Harvey in 2017 (funds collected were split between SI Austin and SI Alvin in TX), the Carr Fire in 2018 (funds collected were split between SI Redding and SI Downtown Redding) and the Camp Fire in 2018 (funds collected were split between SI Chico and SI Bidwell Rancho-Chico). Monetary donations to a local club that ultimately makes the decision on disbursement is always best. It’s a big job collecting, reconciling, reporting, and transferring funds, particularly in the beginning, but if that’s something a club wishes to undertake on behalf of our region, please contact me. Having done it three times, Fed Public Awareness Chair Babette can share her insights and tips from being SNR’s organizer in the past.
As always, the Red Cross is the organization that’s mission is to provide aid in disasters and is best at this. They can always use donations which you can earmark for the Maui fire.
We will await information from SI Maui/Founder Region Governor Vicki for now. If you are interested in sending a nice card or note (please do not send "things") to the SI Maui club. President Catherine’s information is below from the SIA Directory (see why it’s important to keep your date current with SIA)

Soroptimist International of Bidwell Rancho's Calendar

As I (Della Miller) sip my coffee enjoying the cooler morning temperatures, I scroll through social media, and I am bombarded by content that reminds me (despite the HOT days) I should be focusing on my fall aspirations. I smile as I see the back-to-school photos, all the fall fashion and décor trends, and I am counting the days until September 1 (TODAY) when I allow myself my first pumpkin spice latte.

I reflect how different autumn is for me as an adult and how fall has “changed” for me now that my daughter is grown, and I am not in the back-to-school mode volunteering in the classroom or driving on pumpkin patch field trips. No matter what your fall reflections, it is no doubt a season of change, and for SIBR it is the season to “fall” back into volunteering.

For those of you who like to interact with students and/or make a difference in a young girl’s future there are many committees and volunteer options to choose from. SIBR appreciates any help you can offer. If you have time constraints, please remember that even if you are not able to serve on a particular committee there are always options to help by donating items and/or your time on the day of the event.
  • Fairview Project: Responsible for working with the administration at Fairview High to determine the general and scholarship needs of the students and the school. Attending the graduation ceremony in June and present graduates with a senior gift from the club. This Committee often needs donations so watch for updates this fall.
  • Dream it, Be it: Provide career support for girls to help girls grow up to be strong, successful, and happy adults. Targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future and provides girls with access to professional role models, career education, etc.
  • Live Your Dream Awards: Responsible for choosing Live Your Dream recipients
  • Stop Human Trafficking: Promote anti-trafficking awareness and provide resources to local trafficking victims.
For those who prefer seasonal social activities there are some fall fundraisers like the October 22 Paint and Sip that we will be requesting signups for soon. Speaking of fundraisers, this Committee is always looking for support as well as great ideas. Afterall, this is how these important service projects are funded.

If you are eager to plan some winter projects, here are some holiday favorites:
  • Santa Project: Responsible for overall planning and execution of this event. Help secure all give away items, snacks, photography, crafts, etc.
  • Local Women's Holiday Project: Coordinate and/or provide support for Bell Ringing, Food Drive, Jesus Center, etc.
This is only a snippet of the Committee and Volunteer options SIBR needs your help with throughout the year. Choose one or all (LOL) depending on your time constraints! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
