Cannabis legalization in California has raised many questions and concerns regarding the effect that it will have on the Marijuana industry and the general population.  This lecture will begin with an overview of the Cannabis Laws in California that have been developed over the years.  There will be discussion of various issues that occurred during the time of pre-legalization, and how these issues will change after the legalization of cannabis. How will ‘Medical Marijuana’ and ‘Recreational Marijuana’ be distinguished?  How will marijuana be regulated post-legalization?  These types of questions will be explored, along with many others pertaining to Cannabis legalization.

The afternoon presentation will review current knowledge of psychosocial and health effects of cannabis use.  Functional outcomes associated with cannabis use including school and work performance, medical conditions, cognition, quality of life, and psychiatric symptoms will be discussed.  Co-occurring psychiatric disorders observed in cannabis users will be reviewed, including a discussion of early cannabis use as a risk factor for development of psychosis.   Evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological treatment approaches for cannabis use disorder will also be outlined.

The lecture will conclude with a panel discussion focusing on prevention interventions, clinical treatment interventions, and substance use disorder treatment system of care. 

By the conclusion of the lecture, participants should be able to:

1.  Describe how Cannabis Laws have changed in California throughout the years.
2.  List 2 issues that will arise due to cannabis legalization in California.
3.  Discuss the psychosocial and health effects of cannabis use.
4.  Describe how evidence-based behavioral treatments can be used to address cannabis use disorder.

Continuing Education:

The training course meets the qualifications for the provision of three (3.0) continuing education credits/ contact hours (CEs/CEHs). UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program and its content. UCLA ISAP is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs (Provider #64812). UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for three (3.0) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCS, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. UCLA ISAP is also an approved provider of continuing  education  for  RADTs  I/II,  CADCs-CASs,  CADCs  I/II,  CADCs-CSs,  and  LAADCs  (CCAPP, #2N-00-445-1117), CATCs (ACCBC/CAADE, #CP 20 872 C 0819), and CAODCs (CADTP, #151). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #15455, for 3.0 contact hours. CE credit will be awarded at the conclusion of the training. Partial credit will not be available for those participants who arrive late or leave early.
