READING ADVOCACY PARTNER (RAP) 2020
Reading Advocacy Partner (RAP) is a volunteering / mentoring scheme for both young people and professionals who are passionate about reading and are willing to mentor and motivate children who are taking part in the Young Readers Library 30 Books Challenge and to become the best they can be during and beyond the challenge.
The Young Readers Library is a children’s library and social enterprise in Abuja. Our vision is to see a world where everyone is equipped with the appropriate education and skills to improve their employment opportunities and add value to their communities. Our mission is to spur the love of reading and writing for pleasure in children and to help them to develop the necessary reading and writing skills, creativity and leadership skills to be the best they can be.
For the last two years the Young Readers Library has also held a summer reading campaign called the 30 Books Challenge to encourage reading for pleasure amongst children. Those taking part in the challenge are required to read 30 books during a consecutive 30 day period during their school summer holiday.
The 30 Books Challenge will be taking place again in 2020 during July and August and in the following cities: Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Warri, Bonny Island, Ibadan, Benin, Abeokuta and Jigawa.
We are looking for volunteers (RAPs) to spend time after school and at weekends with participating children to assist them with the challenge. We will be setting up reading 'corners' in each city where RAPs will be able to meet with participating children. A RAP's role will include:
- Jointly running the library corners
- Listening to children reading books out loud
- Helping children to read books
- Discussing a completed book with a child and helping them to complete their journal entry
- Suggesting appropriate books to the children for inclusion in their challenge
- Motivating children to continue with the challenge
- Liaising with the staff at the Young Readers Library - updating them on progress and flagging any concerns
