October 2019 Newsletter

Thank you to all of the families and community partners that came out to our Open House. We have 245 students in our school this year and 54 of them are new to Brant Ave. This includes 35 new Kindergarten students and 19 new students in Grades 1-6. We have lots of new Bears!

After an outstanding fundraising drive last year, our Parent Council Laura Secord Chocolate Bar fundraiser is back! Please watch for a letter coming home soon with all the details. Click here for a sneak peak of the letter.  Like in the past, families can “opt-out” by returning the signed letter.

Sept 30 is Orange Shirt Day.  “Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.”

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give me a call at 519-824-2671 x223 , send me an email at mike.anderson@ugdsb.on.ca, drop by the office, or send me a message on SCHOOL MESSENGER. Go Bears!

Mr. Anderson

RUNNING & READING

After another outstanding season, the Running and Reading Program is back at Brant Ave again this year!  Currently, students from Grades 4-6 are eligible to register. We are still looking for more adult volunteers so that we can expand the program to include our Grade 3s.

SHOES AND WEATHER

As the colder weather soon approaches, we are reminding children to dress for the weather.  Students are required to have an indoor and outdoor pair of shoes.  The indoor shoes should be comfortable and appropriate for gym, so running shoes are perfect.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

The UGDSB is celebrating Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 2nd. Students are encouraged to walk to school to promote fitness and well-being and to reduce vehicle congestion and pollution.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Our school has video cameras in the hallways and on the building exterior. These cameras are used in accordance with the UGDSB Video Surveillance Policy 203. The cameras are not live monitored, but the recorded footage can be accessed in the event of an incident that requires investigation.
