Letter from Kathy Frey

An Open Letter to the CCGV Board of Directors:

Last spring I was proud to receive the honor of having the photo gallery named after me. It is a project that I dearly loved to do. Thank you to the Board and the members of the Club who so generously were willing to display their photos. I also want to thank Pat Dechaine and Sharon Hunstad who so willingly volunteered to replace me as Chair of the Photo Display Committee.

After the computer conferences were no longer being held I asked the Board if we could have a nice photo display board for members to continue to keep our club hallway beautiful. It has been several years now and we have had quite an array of photos. Photos of animals, birds and flowers, Indian Dancers and African Tribesman have given members and visitors much viewing pleasure.

Members who have never had a display and wish to have one should contact Sharon or Pat. (Both are CCGV monitors.)

Again, thank you with all my heart for this honor.

New in the Library

The most popular topics in demand in the library are hand-held devices and basic operating systems. So, during the summer, we added two books on Android phones and tablets and three books on Windows 10. [ Librarian Terry Flanagan has written much more information about these books than what appears below. Click to read his full article. ]

HELP ME! Guide to Android for Seniors gives an extremely basic introduction to Android phones and tablets. Only 60 pages and in large type, it was written specifically for those who have difficulty using phones, personal computers, and tablet computers.

Teach Yourself Visually: Android Phones and Tablets is part of the popular "Teach Yourself Visually" series. The book is structured with 2- to 3-page lessons that break big topics into bite-size modules.

Windows 10 in Easy Steps covers the Creator Update. It is a comprehensive yet concise guide to Windows 10. It will walk you through the basics so that you are up and running in no time.

Essential Windows 10 Creator’s Edition covers the new features, menus, and utilities present in the Creator update, with clear instructions and easy-to-follow tutorials and illustrated photographs, graphics, and screen prints.

Laptops for Seniors – Windows 10 Creator Update Edition covers the basics of the operating system, focusing on issues particular to laptop computers.

If there are other topics that we are not adequately serving, please bring them to our attention.

CCleaner Hacked!

Contributed by Don Coon, a member of the Club's Tech Support Team

If your Windows computer is one of the 2.3 million with CCleaner installed, it may have been infected by malware. Follow the steps below to determine if your computer is infected and to remove any malware.

Step 1 – Determine if you have CCleaner installed and find its version number.

If you have Windows 10:
  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Apps & Features at the top of the list.
  3. Type CCleaner in the “Search this list” box.
  4. If CCleaner is not found, it’s not installed on your computer.
  5. If it is found, click the CCleaner icon to see which version is installed.
  6. If the version is less than 5.34, click the Uninstall button.
If you have Windows 7 or Vista:
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Control Panel, then click Programs and Features.
  3. Search for CCleaner, using the text box at the upper right, or scroll through the list of installed programs (clicking the word Name at the top of the first column will alphabetize the list).
  4. If CCleaner is not found, it is not installed.
  5. If it is found, check the number in the Version column.
  6. If the version is less than 5.34, click the icon for CCleaner, and then click the Uninstall button that will appear above the Names column heading.
Step 2 - If your copy of CCleaner was infected (version less than 5.34):
  1. Scan your computer using MalwareBytes.to remove any remaining malware. A free copy of MalwareBytes can be found at www.ninite.com.
  2. Install the latest version of CCleaner. A free and clean copy of CCleaner can be found at www.piriform.com.

Lynda.com Update

Contributed by Paul May

The online learning licenses from lynda.com that we have been able to offer expire on October 31. Lynda.com was purchased by Linkedin, which was then purchased by Microsoft. Under the new ownership, Lynda.com no longer offers the 5-license program we have valued for the past two years.

From now on, Club members who wish continue to use Lynda.com will have to purchase their own individual licenses. These licenses allow unlimited access to over 6,200 courses. You can cancel at any time, and the first month is free. You can read the difference between the plans at www.lynda.com/signup.

          Basic Plan - $19.99/month
          Premium Plan - $29.99/month

You can check out all their course offerings in Business, Technology, and Creative Skills at www.lynda.com.
