Welcome to the August edition of Oswestry Life magazine. Basking in beautiful sunshine I had the pleasure recently of attending the Oswestry Food & Drink Festival. The town was buzzing with the community spirit that makes Oswestry truly wonderful and we are all so excited in anticipation of the Oswestry Balloon Carnival which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend. So, with an events-packed summer, it’s time to don those sunglasses (see our six of the best) sit back, soak up the sunshine and enjoy the read.

Zech and Jamie cycle 55 miles for Hope House

First town crier in over 30 years takes up his role

Oswestry’s new town crier has officially taken on his first role for the town. Phil Brown was named the winner of a competition earlier in the year, returning the office to the town for the first time in almost 30 years. He was on hand to welcome the Heart of England judges to the town in July as part of his first official duty.

Oswestry police officer bravery award An Oswestry police offer has been recognised for her outstanding bravery and courage at The National Police Bravery Awards. PC Kimberley Morris was only in her second week of independent patrol when she was called to a disturbance and potential assault. Entering the house she found a critically injured man with a gaping neck wound who was drifting in and out of consciousness. Administering first aid, she waited for back up to arrive. All the while, the offender was in sight, placing her in considerable danger. Chief constable Anthony Bangham said: “Kimberley demonstrated a perfect balance of compassion for a victim and bravery to enforce the law. Her courage was rightly recognised with nomination and justifiably awarded for such courageous and selfless service. I am very proud of her and her achievement.”

Two Oswestry boys are going to attempt to ride their bicycles from Oswestry all the way to Rhayader in a bid to raise money for Hope House.

Zech, 10 and Jamie, 14 often visit Zech’s grandparents in Rhayader for a cycling holiday. This time they want to cycle from their hometown rather than be taken by car to raise their £1000 target. The journey will take place on 13 August over a distance of 55 miles, taking the boys an estimated nine hours to complete. The route will be via the main road and pass through Morda (visiting Hope House along the way), Welshpool, Newtown, Caersws, Llandinum, Llanidloes, Llangurig and finally Rhayader. For safety reasons, Zech and Jamie’s dads and two of their granddads will be outriders along the journey. The family says: “This journey is all about Zech and Jamie doing their bit to raise money for a very worthwhile charity and they deserve all the support they can get. They cannot give money, but they can supply the event for you to support.” To support Zech and Jamie, visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lisanewton8 TOP: Zech and Jamie fundraising for Hope House

Annual Allotment Show The hard work of Oswestry’s gardeners will be displayed at the Marches School on 18 August.

Ocean team scale three of UK’s highest peaks in 24 hours for charity Three adventurous men from Ocean Telecom have raised £3540 by scaling the UK’s three highest mountains in under 24 hours. Jeremy Rose, Sean Bolas and Robin Talbot who all work together at the telecoms firm on Maesbury Road Industrial Estate took on the Three Peaks challenge for The Movement Centre charity in Oswestry.

Oswestry Gatacre Allotments & Gardens Association annual show will feature everything from the longest runner bean to cakes, homemade wine, handicrafts and children’s classes. Doors open at 2pm, admission just £1.

Centenary artwork As part of their GCSE studies, Year 10 Marches School pupils recently created a wonderful artwork on the side of a building in Welsh Walls, Oswestry. The students work is to commemorate the centenary of WW1 and part of the Wilfred Owen Festival.

They were joined by colleagues Darren Lavender and Simon Calloway who volunteered to drive the long miles between each mountain. Victoria Handbury-Madin, head of fundraising and marketing at The Movement Centre said: “Completing the Three Peaks Challenge is a fantastic achievement, one that the team from Ocean Telecom took on with amazing enthusiasm. The Movement Centre are delighted to be Ocean Telecom’s Charity Partner and we are extremely grateful for their fantastic support. As a charity, we rely on the kind support of donors and fundraisers, which is why the funds raised through the challenge will make such a difference to our work with children with movement disabilities.” To donate to the fundraising effort, visit: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/jeremy-rose3 ABOVE: From left Curtis Langley from The Movement Centre is presented a cheque by Jeremy Rose, managing director at Ocean Telecom with colleagues Simon Calloway, Sean Bolas and Robin Talbot.

Ironworks marks 70 years of NHS with new sculpture To celebrate and honour 70 years of the NHS, this sculpture was created by The British Ironworks Centre and unveiled at a charity fun day at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where it now remains stood proudly outside of the hospital’s general ward. The Centre, which is based on the A5 between Oswestry and Shrewsbury, agreed to make this striking sculpture at no cost to the NHS using an array of obsolete and unwanted hospital equipment donated by local Shropshire hospitals. Clive Knowles, owner and chairman of the British Ironwork Centre, said: “We have been delighted to work with SaTH in creating

this stunning sculpture to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS. It reflects our love for the NHS but also the kind, caring, and hard-working people who work in the organisation throughout Shropshire.”

In the spotlight

Beyond my wildest dreams Hockey player Caro Hulme stars for Wales

Three months on from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, young hockey talent, Caro Hulme, admits to the fact that she is still pinching herself after appearing on the international stage for Team Wales. The former Ellesmere College captain, whose home is in Bronygarth, was initially called up to the Wales senior squad as a travelling reserve, but injury to fellow midfielder Danni Jordan gave Caro her chance, which she seized with both hands just two days before the final squad was to be announced. Caro was told by her head coach, Kevin Johnson, and team manager, Ben Easton, that she would not be returning home early, but would be staying on to play in the tournament. “I was quite emotional when I was told the news”, said Caro. “I did cry a little!” Within hours of the opening ceremony, in which nearly 40,000 spectators and athletes packed into the Carrara Stadium, Caro, at the age of just 18, was making her debut against India, as Wales shocked the 2006 silver medallists, with a stunning 3 - 2 victory. Caro then went on to gain four further caps, playing against England, South Africa, Malaysia and appearing in the starting line-up for the final match against Ghana, which Wales won on penalties. “I still can ‘t believe it,” said Caro. “I went out to Australia for the experience, but to get the opportunity of playing in the

competition was beyond my wildest dreams. I was so lucky. “We were in Queensland for almost a month. The environment was pretty intense at times, training

play and train together at University in Nottingham. They also play together for Beeston Ladies and recently took part in a Wales under-23 test series against Ireland in Dublin.

Twin sister Lottie has also enjoyed considerable success, winning her first senior international indoor cap in January this year

“We are both pretty competitive, but there is no siling rivalry between us on the pitch where we enjoy working together. We have naturally built up a close understanding of how each other plays over the years.”

and playing in temperatures of up to 100° Fahrenheit and being monitored on a daily basis. “To be part of the Athletes Village was an unforgettable experience. I have learned so much.” There was little time for Caro to rest after the games, as she flew back to take part in the National League play off finals in Birmingham, helping her club, Beeston to gain promotion to the Premier Division of England’s Women’s Hockey. Caro isn’t the only hockey player in the Hulme family, twin sister Lottie has also enjoyed considerable success, winning her first senior international indoor cap in January this year. The pair played together throughout school and continue to

Caro’s success doesn’t come without hard work and dedication and with an ambition to play for Great Britain there’s no sign of her slowing down just yet. “I train and play at lest five days a week with the University and my club on top of my studies. In addition, there are regular training camps with Wales including over the Christmas holiday period. This year the Wales senior team will have been away about 70 days. I now play virtually all year round taking rest periods when time allows.” Caro has some advice for other young hockey players trying to follow in her footsteps: “Never give up! Keep working and training hard, putting in those extra hours no one ever sees. Above all, enjoy it!”

Carnival

Up, up and away

Oswestry will see the return of it’s balloon carnival with an array of hot air balloons in mixed shapes and sizes taking to the skies over Oswestry on 25 and 26 August. This family fun event will be held in Cae Glas park in the heart of the town. With over 30 balloons of all shapes, including the magnificent Tall Steve the Penguin, the balloon carnival is an amazing visual spectacle and a great day out for all the family.

Admission will be free of charge and will include other town centre activities including a large continental market. This year there is an exciting ‘Family Fun Zone’ which will have an array of stalls and family activities from classic old-time fairground rides to face painting and much more. The aim of the event is to promote the town, attract visitors, profile Oswestry and its ballooning history, and to act as a significant fundraiser for Nightingale House Hospice. The balloons will be launched each morning at 6am and 6pm in the evening from Cae Glas park itself, but you will be able to watch more balloon activity (weather dependant) each day from 3pm - 6pm. This really is a fun-filled weekend for everyone and will include a wide range of live music and entertainment amongst which will be drone displays, a photo booth, an owl display and ride-along train, whilst not forgetting the return of the ‘Nightglow’ on Saturday evening from 9pm at Cae Glas park. For those who have always wondered what it would be like to take a trip in one of these wonderful hot air balloons, the carnival will also be offering visitors the chance to get up, up and away with a balloon ride. This will need to be pre-booked

Scenes from previous Oswestry balloon festivals . Pictures courtesy of Exclusive Balloons (Tall Steve the Penguin) and Marisa D’Alessandro

Boost for market traders with summer events calendar Oswestry Town Council is working hard to make Oswestry a vibrant market town for both visitors and residents this summer Oswestry is a border market town steeped in history. We boast a spectacular, mysterious Hillfort which is over 3000 years old and one of Britain’s oldest settlements. Sitting proudly on the North West corner of Shropshire right on the Welsh border Oswestry often has the feel of a Welsh town in England. Today, our thriving market town enjoys a growing reputation for award-winning independent shops along with a bustling festival and arts culture. On a traditional market day, the street scene hasn’t much changed in years. Certainly Wilfred Owen, the Oswestry-born famous WW1 soldier and poet, would recognise it still. Markets in Oswestry date back some 800 years. The award-winning Indoor Market is open each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and outdoor street markets are held every Wednesday and Saturday. There is also a successful Artisan Market held on the last Friday of each month which sells the best local produce. Oswestry Markets received a great accolade in being awarded the Best Local Council Market for 2013 by the National Association of British Market Authorities. This acknowledged the huge investment that the council has made in the Indoor Market in terms of facilities and promotion. The markets offer a diverse range of goods and quality food outlets which won’t disappoint.

Upcoming events: Friday 27 July Artisan Market 9am – 3pm, Bailey Street and Bailey Head Tuesday 3 August Guide Dog Event 9am – 3pm, Bailey Head Thursday 5 August Oswestry Street Band 2pm – 4pm, Cae Glas Park Saturday 18 August – Shropshire Produce Market 9am – 3pm, town centre Sunday 19 August Salsa Dance and Music 12 midday – 4pm, Cae Glas Park Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August Oswestry Balloon Festival and Continental Market, Cae Glas Park and town centre

From mouth-watering cuisine to antique treasures, the Market Hall is an attraction right in the heart of the town just waiting to be explored. Friendly traders display their wares each week, with plenty of bargains to be had by all. The Town Council supports the town centre with many events throughout the year. Continental, specialist and local community markets appear regularly alongside the weekly traditional market days. The Oswestry Youth Music Festival attracts over a thousand youngsters each March, a huge Food and Drink Festival in July and Oswestry Christmas Live, held on the first Friday in December, gives the town streets a festive feel with fairground rides, stalls, live music, ice rink and a stunning firework finale. The big event this summer is the Balloon Festival, hosted in the town centre for the first time, it promises to be an exciting experience for everyone involved. More about that on page 13. Poppies

A short fictional thriller by Oswestry author Marcus Robert Evans

Faced with a life and death battle you can pick six people to help you survive. They can be anybody from history right up to the present day. Who would you choose? This is what Mason and Alfred must do. One good, one evil, the choices they make in the next 12 months will be crucial to survival in the final battle. There can only be one victor and this book tells the epic story of how the choices they make affect each man’s life. As the story unfolds each man struggles to get the upper hand. Mason, the good man, who hopes to be reunited with his wife at the end is compelled to do the right thing. He soon learns the power of the balls after making an early mistake. Choosing wisely is crucial, and as time progresses Mason learns how cunning his foe Alfred is. It takes Mason quite some time to figure out who and what he is dealing with but when he does it fills him with fear.

They come briefly, once a year gracing our fields in delicate flair. Bursting forth in red aplomb peaceful, and yet all aflame, in celebration and remembrance. I catch my breath, as I espy

Alfred on the other hand quickly finds out all about Mason, but much to his detriment underestimates him, a mistake which could cost him his life when they finally pit their wits against each other in a titanic battle to the death. Outnumbered 4 to 1 Alfred has to use all his cunning and knowledge of sophisticated computer systems to help him overcome the odds. The battle that ensues will see each man pushed to the limit, a struggle between good and evil.

When investing in a borehole for your property, whether commercial or domestic, they will help you assess the feasibility of an installation and also identify the potential cost savings based on your current metered charges. They provide a complete installation package, which includes a storage tank, variable speed distribution pumps, pressure vessel, control system and, if required, water treatment. They also specialise in Ground Source Heating systems. Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year and this energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water. They drill boreholes from which a ground source heat pump can extract, convert and transfer energy for domestic properties, commercial facilities and leisure complexes.

The benefits of ground source heating systems include: • On average, 75% free renewable energy • Government incentives available • Fixed and stable energy costs • Lower carbon emissions • Constant heat 24 hours a day • Fuels both hot water and heating • Directly replaces your existing boiler • Reversible to provide cooler temperatures in summer • Can add value to property If you have high water or energy bills why not contact Dragon Drilling today for a free site assessment to see if they could start saving you money. Simply call 01824707777 or email admin@dragondrilling.co.uk for more information.

The Marches School Family Fun Day took place at the Marches School Sports Field on Saturday 30 June and it proved once again to be an enjoyable day for hundreds of attendees. The Fun Day featured a climbing wall, a fun fair, bouncy castle and a Festival of Talent competition showcasing musically-gifted local talent. One of the event highlights was a fly past from the Red Arrows as they made their way past between air displays as many waited in anticipation for them to fly over in their unmistakable ‘V’ formation, which was a true spectacle for all. The event was sponsored by Oswestry-based Aico Limited and attracted a huge audience and included a variety of stalls selling local produce and treats. Many of the stalls ran competitions for all to get involved with and there was a raffle which was supported by the Lion Quays Hotel and Spa, the British Ironworks Centre and Arla. The event was a fun-filled afternoon and preparations have already begun for the 2019 event. Hayley Alldridge, events manager at the Marches

School, commented: “The weather was immaculate and the event had a very positive buzz about it. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported this event through sponsorship, holding a stall or attending the occasion. We are very excited for the 2019 Family Fun Day already.” If you are interested in being involved with the 2019 Fun Day, please email alldridge.h@marchesschool.net or call 01691 664407.

I wasn’t always an illustrator – I used to work full time. When I left school, I didn’t think I was good enough to do art. I worked in customer service jobs, cleaning jobs and things like that – I was happy enough, but I felt like something was missing. “Then, I started doing my own children’s book for fun, and that picked up a little bit of interest so I looked into doing more. That’s when I came to Wrexham Glyndŵr to do the course here - and they have

This heatwave has been intense but we’re not complaining. It’s warm and keeping cool is top of the list, so we’ve found some key pieces to help you relax in the heat and feel comfortable. Catching up on some reading whilst sipping a gin cocktail is how we like it. Light-weight jumpers are enough in the evenings as the sun sets but jersey twin sets are breathable and perfect for lounging around in. These work for all ages and you can have some fun with your own style.

What a cracking summer! Recipe

Colston Bassett stilton & red onion flatbread INGREDIENTS FOR THE FLAT BREAD 250g Self raising flour 4g Fresh yeast 50g Natural yoghurt 5g Salt 100g Water Red onion marmalade* Colston Basset Blue Stilton INGREDIENTS FOR THE RED ONION MARMALADE 250g Red onions, sliced 35g Red wine 12g Balsamic vinegar 12g White wine vinegar 25g Light soft brown sugar Salt and pepper, to taste 10g Olive Oil METHOD FOR THE FLAT BREAD… In a freestanding mixer with a dough hook attachment place all the ingredients. Mix on a low speed for 5 minutes, then mix on a medium speed for a further 1 minute. Place the dough into a clean bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place until the dough has risen by two thirds its original size. Heat the oven to 220°c/425°F/gas mark 7. Knock back the dough and gently roll out to make a rectangle shape. Spread the onion marmalade evenly over the top, leaving a 1cm edge on the crust. Generously crumble the blue cheese over the marmalade and bake immediately for 22-25 minutes. Best served immediately. METHOD FOR THE RED ONION MARMALADE… Heat the oil in a large heavy stainless steel saucepan. Add the onions, a pinch of salt and some pepper. Cook over low to medium heat for about 30 minutes until the onions soften and turn translucent, stirring occasionally. Add the wine and vinegars, then stir to combine. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat, stir in the sugar and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, for 30–40 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove the pan from the heat and reserve for later use. Recipe developed by Stuart Collins at Docket Restaurant, Whitchurch, Shropshire

For some, cider is the go to beverage when the thermometer starts creeping over 20°C and with a warm summer like this, cider is really starting to shift. Generally sweeter and more refreshing than wine or beer, cider appeals to all sorts of drinkers when the sun pops out. With styles that range from sweet as stolen candy right through to Atacama dry, and now the growing trend for flavoured cider, there is a wide range of strengths and styles to suit most tastes. Cider also has the added benefit of being gluten free and sometimes vegan friendly (though often not because of the clearing agents used). Last year overall cider on-trade sales rose by 0.2%, while the flavoured ciders grew by 9.1% and now make up over 35% of cider sales. The bestselling flavoured ciders are mixed dark fruits or berries, such as strawberry, or raspberry, but many craft cider makers are more experimental, mixing their ciders with tropical fruits such as passion fruit, kiwi and mango, as well as traditional British flavours like elderflower and rhubarb. Interestingly, packaged cider is in decline while draft sales are increasing, so it seems we prefer to go out and enjoy our cider socially in pubs, clubs and restaurants, rather than drinking in at home. Watch your step though. Cider often doesn’t taste its strength and can catch you out. If you press apples and let them ferment, you’ll end up with a base cider of around 7%ABV and some traditional still ciders hover around this mark, but the more commercial brands are closer to beer strength. What could be nicer than a crisp, cool cider on a sunny afternoon?

with Lucy Williams of Beaumont Financial Planners

Receiving low bank interest? is there an alternative? With the Bank of England’s base rate currently at 0.5% and interest rates with banks at an all-time low, you may be disappointed by the returns that you are receiving. The good news is that there are other options that you can consider, including putting your money away in a tax efficient way. Anyone resident in the UK and over 18 years old has an Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance available to them of £20,000 in the tax year 2018-19. This allowance can be used with a cash ISA (which you may already have with your bank account) and/ or there are stocks and shares ISAs available where you can invest in individual companies or a collective

group of companies. Should the company/ies grow you could benefit from growth in your funds. This type of investment benefits from no tax on growth, or when making withdrawals, together with easy accessibility as you can sell whenever you wish. At Beaumont Financial Planners Ltd we help customers utilise tax efficient means of investing to aid in the growth of their monies. The investments are matched to your attitude to risk, needs, objectives and personal circumstances to ensure that they are suitable for you. I complained about my boss to his line manager because I felt he was bullying me. I was told to put my complaint in writing, which I did along with witness statements from colleagues who saw what had been happening. The boss said he would move me to a different department so it wouldn’t happen again but I said I didn’t want to do a different job, I just wanted no more bullying. When the line manager refused to take steps to reprimand my boss I threatened to take them to a tribunal. Now he’s trying to make me sign a settlement agreement and buy me off instead. What should I do?

A: It’s all about the numbers and peace of mind . By signing a ‘settlement agreement’, sometimes known as a ‘compromise agreement’, you will be giving up your right to go to an employment tribunal. The settlement agreement will be a legal contract between you and your employer and one which there is no getting out of. In addition employers usually insist on keeping such an agreement confidential so you will not be able to discuss with anyone else the details contained within it. Employers will usually pay for you to get independent legal advice about any settlement agreement they offer. If in your case this is not offered you should request it and you should insist on seeking advice from an experienced specialist employment solicitor of your choice. Before going to see your solicitor you should gather together as much relevant information as possible about the grievance you have had with your employer. This will enable the solicitor to decide whether or not the ‘settlement’ figure is sufficient compensation. If the solicitor feels that your agreement should be offering you more, they will explain this to you and offer to negotiate with your employer on your behalf. Further information relating to this question is available from Gwyn Edwards, a Solicitor with GHP Legal. Rambles with a camera

with walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell

The Canal and Blakemere Just 20 minutes’ drive, Blakemere is a wonderful place to visit and I think is the most photogenic of the Meres. The reflections are stunning and there is just something special about the light there. Blakemere can be found just outside Ellesmere on the way to Whitchurch. There is a small car park from where you can walk down along by the canal, or you can follow the canal from the wharf at Ellesmere and en-route you can walk through the tunnel (maybe take a torch). You can go over the top if you prefer. The third option is to join the canal at Colemere and walk towards Ellesmere. The name Blakemere is derived from ‘Black Mere’ which comes from its peaty colour. The mere was formed in the ice ages and is abundant in natural life.

Unlike the Mere and Colemere there is no public access, but it can be viewed from the canal towpath. Perhaps this adds to its rather mysterious appeal. Looking over the Mere you can often see herons and cormorants on the far shore and in late spring the reflections of rhododendrons add a splash of colour. Walking on the narrow strip of land between the canal and the mere is memorable. I remember it clearly from a canal holiday I took here in the 1980’s, when I lived on the south coast. There is always a lot to see, you just need to keep your eyes (and ears) open. Recently I’ve seen a red kite and buzzards overhead, spotted woodpeckers across the canal, and great crested grebe on the mere. On a sunny day look for large carp basking in the shallows. If you’re lucky you may see the flash of blue and orange of kingfishers. Oswestry life | 55

Dr Paul Middleton

Are you an Addict? “The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones” Somerset Maugham The World Health Organisation (WHO is that? Sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun) has just recognised online gaming as a disease and the NHS has opened its first online gaming addiction clinic. The charity Action on Addiction says 1 in 3 of us are addicted to something. Personally, I think that is an underestimate. Is addictive behaviour one of our basic human survival drives? Many people who become “addicted” to music, writing, running or a number of other activities often end up being celebrated as famous composers, authors or athletes. We will all have known people who

become “dedicated” to a particular course of action and pursed it with “addictive” enthusiasm. Addiction perhaps only becomes a clinical issue, a disease or illness, when it has the potential to cause harm. Research is now beginning to show changes in the brain of patients with harmful addiction problems which seems to fit Marshall Marinker’s concept of biological change making addiction fit the definition of a disease. What is clear is that some people do become so addicted to computer gaming that it affects their mental health, their family life and can even result in death. However, confused as we might feel about how this fits into the spectrum of ill health these patients need help, and our understanding.

If this article has made you wonder if you might need further advice about possible addiction issues there is more information on support on the www.nhs.uk website and your GP surgery will also be able to help.

Securing your home is Elem’entry

Our home is our castle, but in the likely event that yours doesn’t have a fortress and moat protecting it, you’ll need the next best thing - a reliable lock system.

Most of us already have what we assume to be a reliable lock, but did you know most locks can be broken into by a burglar in just nine seconds? It’s all on the website of Gobowen locksmith Allan Smedley at www.elementrysurelock.co.uk. Allan, who is City and Guilds qualified supplies and fits an alternative to standard locks, an Ultion lock can make your home so secure the manufacturers are willing to pay £1000 compensation if anyone manages to break into your home. “You have to see it to believe it,” says Allan. “People don’t know how vulnerable they are – it’s easy for their homes to be broken into. When I went to the training, the first thing I noticed was I had the locks that were being broken into at home. They were being broken into in a couple of minutes, so I immediately got mine changed.”

The Ultion locks come with a unique set of keys that cannot be replicated. They are first registered when they are fitted and are password protected. It’s not just our homes that are under threat, as Allan explains: “Back in the day, when a car was broken into it could be hotwired. That isn’t possible now with new security systems. But many of us still walk into our homes and put our keys down by the door, so all the thieves need to do is get through our door and before you know it your car is halfway down the road.” Allan can also supply and fit a new type of Yale lock which can be operated from a smartphone. “If you’re in Manchester and your child can’t get into the house, you can send a one-off code to their phone so they can get in,” ends Allan. Allan is now based in the upper level of the Oswestry indoor market on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and happy to offer free advice, or call Allan at Elem’entry Surelock 24 hours a day on 01691 238176 or 07596 905558. Motoring

Clocking up the smiles Journalist, car enthusiast and new dad Richard Jones takes the Vauxhall Grandland X to Maesbury Marsh. If I was to ask what the top two selling Vauxhall’s on the market are I suspect 99.9% of you would guess the Corsa and the Astra… and for now you’d be right. But fast forward 12 months and you could be in for a surprise as Vauxhall are predicting that the Grandland X will outsell the Astra and other traditional favourites such as the Insignia and Mokka. It is once again proof of how important SUVs have become to car manufacturers, so to find out how good Vauxhall’s latest offering is Isabelle and I packed our bags and headed off on a road trip to Maesbury Marsh. The first thing I noticed when packing the car full of Belle’s ‘entourage of stuff’ is its size. The boot, although slightly smaller than the Peugeot 3008 that the Grandland is based on, is plenty big enough for a push chair, trike, baby carrier and a picnic. And our green-fingered friends will be pleased to know that the rear seats can be folded flat; making the trip home from the garden centre with all those beautiful new plants much more convenient. And while I am not one for gardening, I did find this most useful when a couple of us went for a round of golf. Our drive to Maesbury Marsh was quite an entertaining one. At 15-months-old Belle no longer falls asleep the moment the car starts moving, instead we now switch the radio on and watch her in the rear view mirror as she throws a few dance moves from within her car seat. On the twisting B-roads we took in on our pre-planned route – which was deliberately 50 miles

The interior comes with an eight-inch touchscreen that is simple to use and is fully connected to all the modern technology such as Apple Car Play, Bluetooth and WiFi longer than it needed to be – the Grandland X was also fairly entertaining. The 1.2-litre petrol engine was actually pretty good. It was happy to rev and at 130bhp it comfortably kept pace with other traffic on the road, while promising to do 55.4 miles to the gallon on the combined cycle. The interior comes with an eightinch touchscreen that is simple to use. The images are crisp and it is fully connected to all the modern technology such as Apple Car Play, Bluetooth and WiFi. It also comes with Vauxhall’s OnStar service, a call centre staffed by advisors who can book hotels or parking spaces for you before sending details to the SatNav. It will also alert the emergency services if the car’s airbags are deployed. Once at Maesbury March we parked up and went for a walk down the canal path. I had the picnic strapped to my back while Belle marched a couple of paces ahead of me. She has always loved the great outdoors but never more so now she is able to walk and explore the sounds, sights and smells for herself. Picking up a stick to tickle me with is her favourite game while she

also loves to imitate the sounds the animals make. With cows, sheep, ducks and dogs all featuring on our daddy-daughter adventure she had a wonderful time mooing, baaing, quacking and barking, and despite occasionally stumbling over and grazing her knee she would always spring back up with a beaming smile and an ‘uh-oh!’ By the time we returned to the car she was totally worn out. She fell fast asleep the moment I strapped her into her car seat, so we took the direct journey home along the A483. It was here that the Grandland X really excelled, because not only was it more comfortable and easier to drive on the smoother, wider roads, it also felt like a true family car. I felt content, satisfied and happy all at the same time and by my reckoning any car that plays it part in a day like that must have something about it. The Vauxhall Grandland X is available from Arthurs of Oswestry. 01691 652235 www.arthurscars.co.uk

Church Street

These two images of Church Street were taken around 100 years apart with the older image dating from 1916 (hence the substantial number of men in military uniform). Immediately noticeable is the large dwelling on the right-hand side of the picture which occupied the area now known as Festival (or Red) Square. Known as the Doctor’s House this impressive property had gardens to the rear which stretched back to the site of the Smithfield car park. Prior to the erection of the house the site contained a water-driven corn mill with the pond being at the rear of the Lloyd’s Bank premises. The Doctor’s House survived into the 1920s when it was demolished to form an extension and parking area for the Smithfield market.

removed to the house opposite. It was redeveloped in the mid-20th century to form the rather ugly building that now occupies the site. The Post Office moved to the site immediately next to the bank in 1879 and the clock was erected in June 1890 in memory of John Askew Roberts who was the founder of Woodalls Press and former editor of the Advertizer as well as a local JP and councillor who had died in 1884.

Although still looking like a residence, Lloyd’s Bank had actually traded from this site from the late 1880s and prior to this was occupied by several doctors who later

Willow Street

To see how a scene used to look is often only necessary to look up and this view of Willow Street is a great illustration of that. Although many of the frontages have changed beyond recognition, the upper floors remain remarkably similar.

The building in the left foreground of the 1904 image was The Woolpack Inn (formerly the Pack Horse) and dates from the early 18th century. Along with many other buildings on that side of the road it is fronted by steps to stop the stream which ran down Willow Street encroaching the property. Next to it is the Pearl Office which was built in 1860 following the demolition of two

straw thatched, wattle & daub cottages which had occupied the site. A plumber occupied the next building and the row of cottages between that and the Butcher’s Arms were demolished in the 1960s to form an extension to Roy Evans’ garage in, what must surely be, one of the last acts of architectural vandalism to befall the town. The right-hand side of Willow Street remains largely unchanged until the area that adjoins the Post Office which was redeveloped in the 1960s and 70s. In the centre background is, of course, the old Cross Market Hall which was demolished in 1964 and the new Woolworths store erected.

Last Word Jassett Cook

Jassett Cook (20) is co-owner of Oswestry Climbing Centre

Where do you live? I live in the heart of Oswestry town centre, near the local Sainsbury’s. Have you always lived locally? Yes! My maternal family were local farmers; my mum grew up rurally just outside town, and my paternal family derive from Gobowen. My parents met in The Boars Head! What schools/college did you go to? I attended The Meadow’s Primary School, The Marches Academy, and North Shropshire College. At college, I studied a BTEC in ‘Interactive Media’. What made you want to start your own business? University, or a more traditional route of study, never really appealed to me. I always excelled at social interaction and providing a service to the local community always seemed the most rewarding option. How long have you been open for now? Almost a year now. Although it feels a lot less. The time has flown by! How easy/difficult was it to set up on your own? Although I manage the day-today running of Oswestry Climbing Centre, I co-own the business with my step-dad. With the help of other key 66 | Oswestry life

members of staff, setting up the wall was anything but a chore!

Morning Kids’ Club for children to let their hair down.

How did you get into climbing? On a family visit to Liverpool, we visited ‘Awesome Walls Climbing’ as an off-chance activity. Since that point, I’ve been hooked, watching YouTube videos to further improve my technique. I’ve been climbing for around five years now and I now climb at a grade of V8.

When you’re not working, where do you enjoy going in the town to eat, drink and relax? Liar Liar is always great for a smoothie. I’m not averse to a pint or two in The Bailey Head either.

How is the business going so far? Very well thank you! We’ve built up a great rapport with many of the local schools, and we’re in the process of setting up climbing clubs and school trips for interested students. Where do you enjoy climbing locally outdoors? Here in Shropshire we’re blessed to be surrounded by some fantastic geographical locations. Nescliffe holds our closest crag, but there are also some fantastic routes across the border in North Wales. Llangollen’s setting makes any journey there memorable. Is Oswestry Climbing Centre suitable for beginners? Of course. We can provide a beginner’s induction, including oneto-one mentoring, to anyone over the age of six. Our family-induction ensures that everyone gets involved, and we also provide a Saturday

Do you have any advice for other budding entrepreneurs who are considering setting up their own business in the town? Keep it simple! If you do the simple things right and apply a hefty work effort, you’ll be surprised what you can achieve. What does the future hold for Oswestry Climbing Centre? We’re hoping to increase our collection of holds and add more volumes in the hope of further improving the experience for our customers. Finally, what’s the best thing about living in Oswestry? You’re never too far from some beautiful scenery, and with all the benefits of a traditional market town, what’s not to love? Oswestry Climbing Centre is open Monday – Friday 12 – 9pm and weekends 12 – 8pm. Visit www.oswestryclimbing.com to find out more.
