FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers

Last week was National Science Week which was embraced across the school. As you are aware our ASPIRE program welcomes mentors in our community and beyond to work with students in Mathematics, STEM, Visual Arts and Digital Technologies. We were fortunate to have Dr Kat Ross: Astrophysics PhD Student and Science Communicator spend some time with us last week.

Dr Kat Ross began her presentation by asking the children to draw a picture of a scientist. She certainly changed the stereotypical view of what a scientist might look like by the end of her presentation where children were asked to repeat the activity and produced drawings of women scientists just like Dr Kat.

Growing up, Kat used to watch the International Space Station going overhead with her family and was fascinated when she learned people live inside it. This fascination with staring up into the universe has never waned. She is now a Ph.D. candidate at Curtin University studying the baby black holes in the centres of distant galaxies trying to understand galaxy evolution and the history of our universe. Kat has a background in optical interferometry of red giant stars, dark matter content of galaxies and physics education research. She is an activist for women In STEM and works as a science communicator when not staring at distant baby black holes
.
Dr Kat was asked by a student what she liked most about her work. She spoke about how she gets to study parts of the universe that have never been seen before by another human. We all thought that was pretty amazing. The children loved this session and we hope it has sent some children that share a passion for this area of science to do further reading and research. Most of the breakthrough discoveries and remarkable inventions throughout history, from flints for starting a fire to self-driving cars, have something in common: They are the result of curiosity. The impulse to seek new information and experiences and explore novel possibilities.

Cyber Safety Lady - (Hurry it is not too late!)
The P&F together with the school have made a considerable financial investment in TONIGHT'S zoom presentation hosted by Leonie Smith at 7:30pm. We would love as many parents as possible to benefit from this great presentation.

The event is for families with children of all ages and is designed to help parents and educators to get up to speed with what our children and students are doing online. We have done so as we value this engaging presenter and know you will take away ideas and resources for improving your family experiences with digital technology.
Wellbeing Week
Next week is Wellbeing Week and the theme for the week is “Being A Team Member.”

The staff have planned a number of activities for the week to build and improve teamwork skills as well as to promote wellbeing. A successful team is one where everyone's unique skills and strengths help the team achieve a shared goal in the most effective way. If you have good people skills you'll make a good team player, and skills like communication and having a positive attitude make a team great. On Thursday children will wear something that represents a team that they belong to. Please refer to further information regarding Wellbeing Week in this newsletter.

School Musical
We will be continuing with our school musical “Shrek.” The children cannot participate in group singing activities at the moment so we are focusing on the drama and the dancing aspects throughout the school as well as some solo performances. We are hopeful that we will be able to provide either a live or filmed version of Shrek for all to enjoy and as a keepsake towards the end of next term. Mrs Archer is doing an amazing job re imagining this performance and keeping everyone on track.

The Colour Run

This fun school event will still be going ahead. The event will be run in class groups rather than as a whole school together.
Our Year Six families will be organising a delicious lunch and goodies that can be purchased on the day. Children need to make their online profile if they intend to gather sponsors for this event. A number of children have already done so.

School Uniform - Parent Help Required
We have noticed that there are a number of children wearing the incorrect school uniform.

Could we please ask all parents to do a Wellbeing Week Uniform Check across the school. Is your child wearing the correct school jacket? Netball jackets are not permitted. Does your child have the correct colour tights or socks on? Most importantly as the weather warms up please help us by checking each day that your child has their hat.The staff are working very hard in this area and cannot do this without your support. Please label all items of clothing and we will get it back to your child.

Next week as a school we will be celebrating Book Week and holding a very special Father’s Day Liturgy. We will be sharing these events with parents via video and Zoom. We look forward to staying connected with our community. If you haven’t joined the Corpus Christi Facebook page we encourage you to do so as we try to post most school events for parents and friends to enjoy.

SCHOOL RULE : Respect self and Others

Our School Rule for this week at Corpus Christi is to Respect our Environment. We can do this by Caring for Property & the Environment.

We are encouraging students to take responsibility for caring for their belongings (which have been paid for by mum and dad/school) so they will remember to look after them. We want children to recognise that these items are provided to them, to help them at school.

Students should take responsibility for their belongings by having their names on all their belongings (jumper, hat, lunchbox, pencil cases, etc).  They can also take responsibility for putting their lunchboxes where they should be and putting things in lost property or returning the lost item to owners.

It is also important to take responsibility for the environment around them by picking up rubbish even if it is not their own and putting things in the correct recycling bins. They need to tidy up after themselves in the classroom or playground by returning equipment, tidying desks, and keeping their classroom clean.

Our School Rule for next week at Corpus Christi is to respect self and others.  We can do this by being a bucket filler.

We all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our good thoughts and feelings. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when they are empty, we are sad. It’s important to know that we can fill our own bucket and so can others. We can also dip into it.

"Bucket fillers" are those who help without being asked, give hugs and compliments, and generally spread their love and good feelings to others. The simple metaphor of a bucket helps us understand the importance of consideration and love, particularly towards those who bully. People who "dip" into our bucket often rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing negative things.

ASPIRE - Achieving Specific Personal Inspiration with Real Enrichment
ICAS Assessments

We have had an outstanding participation rate in the ICAS Assessments for 2020 with 46 students from Year 2-6 sitting the Science, English and Digital Technologies assessments last week.  All students coped very well with the online format and there were little to no technical issues.

Students will be sitting the Maths and Spelling Bee assessments next week.  Remember that students need to bring their own headphones to school to assist in accessing the assessments.  School devices are provided.

Thank you to parents for supporting their children in accessing this vital aspect of our ASPIRE program, where students are encouraged to reach their full potential by challenging themselves to engage in enriching learning experiences.

RE NEWS

Walking the Way –walkingtheway.dbbcso.org/
In this great resource there are weekly E-Bulletins here for parents.
Spring Has Sprung

As you know this month we have been busy discussing ways in which ‘together we can make a difference’. Each class is working on ways in which they can reach out to a local aged care facility in our local area. We have contacted Aged Care facilities and discussed how we can make a difference for them in these tough Covid 19 times.

The Aged Care Centres are:

Glenaeon -  207 Forest Way, Belrose – Kindergarten
Belrose Country Club Retirement Village – Year One
Uniting Wesley Gardens - Belrose – Year Two
Terrey Hills Nursing Home – Year Three
Bupa - St Ives – Year Four
Turramurra House - Turramurra – Year Five
Group Homes Australia – Year Six

Ask your child/ren about this great initiative. Thanks to all our class parents who have kindly agreed to deliver our letters/poems/artwork/biscuits/chocolates to these homes next week. We will be in touch with you shortly when we are ready to have these gifts delivered.
Father’s Day
This year our Liturgy will be led by Year One via Zoom. This will be held at 9am and recorded if you can’t zoom in live.  The Liturgy can be accessed by our assembly zoom link here.

Once our Liturgy has finished we will begin our normal Friday morning assembly.
Don’t forget to send your photo to penny.delmage@dbb.catholic.edu.au if you want to be included in our Father’s Day reflection.
Catholic Mission

This year we have Catholic Mission Zooming into each class to talk about their fun and exciting programs that engage heads, ears and hands in a mission to get our students kicking goals for other children around the world. Last year we had a fun day in October (second week of term) for Catholic Mission week to raise awareness and much needed funds.  Each year our schools assist Catholic Mission to ‘sock it to poverty’.  We would love you to register for this great initiative via this link.

On Wednesday 21st October, we would like our students to wear either crazy socks with their sport uniform or their favourite soccer kit.  Each class will be rostered to participate in a 'sock it to poverty' penalty shoot out with with $1 being sponsored per attempted goal.  Every child will have 5 attempts at a goal, the first goal will be using a soccer ball that is made by the class with paper and string as they do in Cambodia.  The other four attempted goals will be with a leather soccer ball.

We would appreciate you sponsoring your child $5 for this event to raise much needed funds for Catholic Mission again this year.

Thank you

Blessings,

Athletics Carnival

I think the weather we had for the carnival was the finest weather we have had for a carnival in years.  We couldn’t have asked for a more glorious day.

There was a wonderful Corpus Christi spirit and a sense of fun in the air and the teachers were blown away with the level of sportsmanship displayed by the students.  There were many students who especially went to help their friends’ mid race who had fallen over, which was just beautiful to see.

Thank you to the parents who volunteered to assist us on the day, and for taking Covid safety and social distancing seriously.

RECORD BREAKER

Congratulations to Jorja H (Year 5) who broke the 11 years discus record with a distance of 19.33m (previous distance of 18.81m set in 2006).  What an incredible distance to throw a discus!

FIELD EVENT RESULTS
Well done to all the students who placed in the 3 field events (discus, shot put and long jump).  These students received their ribbons last week at a special sports assembly.

AGE CHAMPIONS
The age champions were:
SPIRIT CUP
The results for the spirit cup were as follows: 1st red, 2nd Blue, 3rd Green, 4th Gold.  Well done to our house captains for leading your houses through a number of fabulous cheers and chants throughout the day, and the Year 5 students for helping our Year 6 captains.

HOUSE CUP

The competition for the house cup was tough - congratulations to the Green house who took out 1st place (by only 6 points!), 2nd Gold, 3rd Blue, 4th Red

Thank you all again for helping to make the Athletics Carnival such a wonderful day.
We would appreciate any feedback parents have regarding the day.  If you could please forward any comments to laura.bahri@dbb.org.au, your feedback will be greatly appreciated.  For more photos click here https://tinyurl.com/Athletics-Carnival
COLOUR RUN

As you are already aware, we will be holding a School Colour Fun Run as a major fundraising event for our school with money being raised to go towards flexible learning.

Thank you to the children who have set up their online profile already for fundraising.  Please refer to the sponsorship booklet which went home last week for more details.

Students can fund raise both through cash donations and online donations (online donations are easiest!). For raising a minimum of $10 they will be eligible for a prize and the more they raise, the better the prize is that they’ll receive.

We acknowledge that this is a difficult time for some families, and it is understandable if you are not able to fund raise, your child will still be part of the fun of the Colour Run.

As of Tuesday this week, we have raised almost $3,600 which is a great start.

As of Tuesday morning, our top fundraising classes are:
  1. Year 2
  2. Kindergarten
  3. Year 1

As of Tuesday morning, our top fundraising students are:
  1. Angus B (Kindy)
  2. Noah W (Year 2)
  3. Jasper S (Year 4)

Well done everyone so far!
