Be The Media! Workshop: “Building a Media Business While Staying True to Your Activist Roots” w/ filmmaker Nicholas Bruckman

Join us for a workshop on creative entrepreneurship and activism, and how to build a career in the arts while staying true to your principles. Learn how you can intentionally avoid a traditional film path, and take your storytelling skills and translate to what matters!
Filmmaker and CEO Nicholas Bruckman will show samples of his work, including feature films and short form storytelling or companies and social justice organizations. Nicholas talk about how he began his career in independent feature length film, and his discovery connecting artistry, activism and storytelling to have an impact in the world.
At the intersection of being a CEO and social justice filmmaker, he’ll provide guidance for people starting their career in documentary film and video production and the intersection with small business. He will share his personal experiences building People’s Television, a 17-person production studio that emphasizes stories for social change, and strategies for branding, sustainability and entrepreneurship.
Nicholas Bruckman produced the feature film VALLEY OF SAINTS, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Independent Spirit award. The film was released on Netflix and was a New York Times Critics Pick.He previously directed the feature documentary LA AMERICANA, which won the best documentary prize at the NY and LA Latino Film Festivals. The film broadcast worldwide on networks including PBS, Nationa Geographic, and Al Jazeera.
Nicholas Bruckman is the director of NOT GOING QUIETLY, his latest film about 32-year-old Ady Barkan’s life.
Nicholas is the founder and CEO of People’s Television, a creative studio that produces award-winning independent films as well as digital and broadcast content for the world’s leading brands and organizations.
Through People’s TV, Nick regularly directs films for brands including Greenpeace, Facebook, and Dropbox. His work has been supported by Sundance, Film Independent, the Sloan Foundation, the IFP Cannes Producers Fellowship, and the International Documentary Association.
This event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities, Arts and Social Science, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media.
