World Music Drumming for Upper Elementary: Creating a Musical Community

My Students

Many of my students require diverse opportunities for learning and music-making in order to remain engaged, and I feel that incorporating more world music and percussion activities would allow my students to foster a deeper connection to music and to community music-making.

I teach students from kindergarten to fifth grade, including two classes of severely autistic children.

The community where my school is located values music education. However, severe budgetary cuts this past year have hindered my ability to order new materials. My elementary students enjoy experiencing and creating music in all aspects: singing, dancing, literacy, movement exploration, and instrumental applications.

My Project

The "World Music Drumming" curriculum by Will Schmid emphasis the importance of respect among community members. Drum circles are an amazing way of allowing children to explore musically and develop their rhythmic and ensemble skills while also learning to respect and communicate with others, both verbally and non-verbally.

Now, more than ever, children need a place to feel important and included.

This curriculum allows children to find where they fit in, and gives each child an integral part in the percussion ensemble.

Students will also learn about music from many parts of the world, and be afforded the benefits of cross-curricular learning (world history and cultures!).

I am requesting four key-tuned Remo tubano drums in various sizes. In the curriculum, there are parts for high, medium, and low drums. These three sizes would allow students to take turns playing drums of each timbre. These drums are high-quality, and would benefit children for MANY years to come. The drums are used in conjunction with other classroom instruments, like recorder, shakers, bells, and smaller hand drums. Learning how to play and maintain an independent instrumental part is an extremely high-level skill, and one that is attainable for these students.
