Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul want to dismantle New York’s bedrock legal Right to Shelter, which would relegate thousands of people to living on our streets and in other public spaces. The Coalition for the Homeless and The Legal Aid Society, working with the NY SANE coalition and many other caring New Yorkers, are fighting to prevent this from happening. But we need your help! I strongly oppose any efforts to erode New York’s bedrock Right to Shelter, which has protected countless individuals from having to live, and die, on our streets. Weakening the Right to Shelter will put people without homes at risk of grave harm, and will likely result in the emergence of the sprawling tent encampments seen in so many cities throughout the U.S. that lack such a right – something none of us want to see happen. We urge you to demonstrate leadership that honors New York’s history and values by ensuring that no one is cruelly relegated to sleeping on the streets, exposed to the elements. Preserve New York’s fundamental Right to Shelter!
