Lavender and Mint Essential Oil Project

Lavender and Mint Essential Oil Project

FREE Field Workshop, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

437 Deweys Bridge Rd, Whitehall, NY 12887

David and Diane Allen started their two and a half-acre lavender farm in 2013. They strive to minimalize their impact on the environment by sourcing their electricity and water locally, using solar panels, and many other practices. They have recently added fruit trees and bee hives to diversify the farm. Due to the increasing interest in lavender, the Allens continue to develop their sustainable lavender production skills, while allowing the public to come and learn more about it.

This field day will highlight David and Diane’s experience growing lavender and Dr. Lily Calderwood’s Northeast SARE partnership grant titled “Development of Mint and Lavender Production in the Northeast.” In May of last year, we planted lavender, spearmint and peppermint cultivar trials here and at Hay Berry Farm in Hoosick Falls, NY. The goal of this research project is to evaluate essential oil herb cultivars for pest challenges, winter hardiness, yield, and oil quality.
