About this event

We are excited to host Kate Bowler as the next speaker in our Sylvester Spirituality Series. Dr. Bowler is an author, podcast host, and associate professor of the history of Christianity in North America at Duke University. After being unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at age 35, she wrote the New York Times best-selling memoir, Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I've Loved), which tells the story of her struggle to understand the American belief that all tragedies are tests of character.

Her lecture will help us consider the following: The world loves us when we are good, better, best, but what about when we get sick, lose someone we love, or life hasn't turned out like we thought it should? Dr. Bowler will offer us a richer understanding of hope in the face of uncertainty, despair, and suffering as we begin to understand that life is a chronic condition and there is no cure for being human.

Please note that seating is limited to ensure social distancing. Tickets and masks are required for entry. Lecture plans may be modified in light of COVID policies and procedures. Ticket holders will be notified via email.
