Working together towards more sustainable packaging waste management
About us
Packaging is essential for making sure life-saving assistance reaches those who need it, but it also creates vast amounts of waste that are difficult to manage. Shifting how the humanitarian sector manages its packaging waste towards greater sustainability is too huge a task for any single organization. For this reason, the partners of the Joint Initiative for Sustainable Humanitarian Assistance Packaging Waste Management are working together to make the humanitarian community’s packaging waste management more environmentally and socially responsible, through collaboration, pooling resources, and sharing knowledge and good practices. The Joint Initiative's partners include: USAID Saves Lives, ACTED, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Catholic Relief Services, Climate Action Accelerator, Concern Worldwide, Global Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster (CCCM), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO), Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Global Logistics Cluster, Global Shelter Cluster, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), International Organization for Migration (IOM), Réseau Environnement Humanitaire, Save the Children, ShelterBox, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) / Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Joint Environment Unit (JEU), UNICEF, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Welthungerhilfe (WHH), World Food Programme (WFP), World Vision USA and the WREC Project. This page is maintained by the Joint Initiative for Sustainable Humanitarian Packaging Waste Management. The Joint Initiative’s first phase was supported by USAID Saves Lives, UNHCR and the UNEP-OCHA Joint Environment Unit. The current phase is a collaborative effort spearheaded by leading humanitarian organizations.

🌍 The world generates 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually. Consequences for the environment and human health are dramatic, and include pollution of soil and water resources from a variety of chemical substances, as well as greenhouse gas emissions resulting from decomposition or combustion. Limiting the carbon and environmental impact of packaging, especially single-use plastic, constitutes an important strategy to reduce potential local waste pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Below are four solutions you can adopt, along with the specific steps and resources needed to implement them, in order to address the issue effectively. ➡️ Eliminate unnecessary or problematic plastic packaging: https://lnkd.in/gYEAqsie ➡️ Use alternative packaging materials to reduce plastic pollution: https://lnkd.in/dgCtP-XH ➡️ Repurpose packaging and extend its useful life: https://lnkd.in/dEAKC9Zy ➡️ When waste can’t be avoided or reduced any further, recycle it: https://lnkd.in/di2c9cG9 📣 Shout out to our colleagues at the Joint Initiative for Sustainable Humanitarian Assistance Packaging Waste Management, who have recently published a compendium of case studies from humanitarian organisations aiming to reduce the footprint of their packaging. ♻ Today is #InternationalDayofZeroWaste. The JI - in collaboration with our network of 26 partners - provides tools and resources to help humanitarian actors significantly reduce their waste. ♻ 🌍 Working with our partners, we've produced documents [https://lnkd.in/efWVPeDD] showing how humanitarian organizations can give a second life to packaging and avoid it becoming waste. We've also developed practical guidance documents on how to reduce packaging waste at the procurement phase [https://lnkd.in/eUytrCbT] 🌏 And in Bangladesh, our partner World Food Programme has made great progress in promoting the use of reusable and refillable packaging for food assistance in refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. 👉 Read the case study: https://lnkd.in/e6eTbaHS #sustainability #zerowaste #sustainablepackaging

🌍 🌏 To celebrate #WorldSustainableProcurementDay, the Joint Initiative is pleased to share a compendium of 8 case studies from humanitarian organizations endeavoring to reduce the environmental footprint of their packaging. #collaborate2accelerate ♻ 📦 Available in French [https://lnkd.in/eDTQ5bDJ] & English [https://lnkd.in/eVdcAjfP], this valuable resource highlights results achieved, challenges faced, and lessons learned from organizations across the globe in the quest for more #sustainblepackaging. 🌿 🌱 Ultimately, the case studies teach us that organizational change is required to improve the way we work, and that the humanitarian sector needs to shift to a sustainability-centered mindset that focuses on both long-term strategies to prevent further environmental degradation and climate change and on the urgent delivery of humanitarian assistance. 🤝 The JI brings together 26 humanitarian stakeholders with a shared goal of reducing the negative environmental impact of humanitarian action, focusing on packaging waste and enhancing coordination with key actors on sustainable supply chain management.
