Working together towards more sustainable packaging waste management

About us

Packaging is essential for making sure life-saving assistance reaches those who need it, but it also creates vast amounts of waste that are difficult to manage. Shifting how the humanitarian sector manages its packaging waste towards greater sustainability is too huge a task for any single organization. For this reason, the partners of the Joint Initiative for Sustainable Humanitarian Assistance Packaging Waste Management are working together to make the humanitarian community’s packaging waste management more environmentally and socially responsible, through collaboration, pooling resources, and sharing knowledge and good practices. The Joint Initiative's partners include: USAID Saves Lives, ACTED, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Catholic Relief Services, Climate Action Accelerator, Concern Worldwide, Global Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster (CCCM), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO), Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Global Logistics Cluster, Global Shelter Cluster, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), International Organization for Migration (IOM), Réseau Environnement Humanitaire, Save the Children, ShelterBox, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) / Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Joint Environment Unit (JEU), UNICEF, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Welthungerhilfe (WHH), World Food Programme (WFP), World Vision USA and the WREC Project. This page is maintained by the Joint Initiative for Sustainable Humanitarian Packaging Waste Management. The Joint Initiative’s first phase was supported by USAID Saves Lives, UNHCR and the UNEP-OCHA Joint Environment Unit. The current phase is a collaborative effort spearheaded by leading humanitarian organizations.
