Dr Leah Farrell

Don’t wait. Book your scan at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital For anyone with a health concern, the thought of waiting weeks or months for a scan can seem like a lifetime. At Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, a range of tests and scans are available weekly with test results delivered promptly usually the same or next day. Appointments are available to book at a time to suit the patient. Radiologist Dr Leah Farrell has been working with Nuffield Health since 2015. “I qualified as a doctor in 2000, did postgraduate training surgery for four years and started my radiology training in 2004, becoming a consultant in 2011 with Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust.” Dr Farrell works closely with her medical and surgical colleagues to decide on the best imaging tests to get swift diagnosis for her patients. “I work together with a fantastic team of radiologists with over 100 years of combined experience. At Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital our enthusiastic radiology team are happy to answer any questions and quickly arrange an appointment for a scan, usually within one week.” Four scan types are available at the private hospital; CT or CAT scan, MRI scan, Ultrasound and X-Ray. 10 | It’s beautiful

“We do all kinds of imaging including X-Rays, ultrasounds, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI. We have radiologists covering all speciality types. My special interests are gynaecological and gastroenterological imaging which involve specialist ultrasound, CT and MRI scans.” A CT scan (Computerised Tomography) uses special X-rays to take images of the body. It uses a computer to create ‘slices’ (cross sections) of the body and internal organs. The detail in the scan allows the radiologist to detect abnormalities which can help in the early detection of disease and injury. An MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a large, powerful magnet, radio waves and an advanced computer to take incredibly detailed images of the relevant part of your body. MRI has become widely used because the pictures are so detailed that the radiologist can see even tiny changes. Ultrasound is a non-invasive scan used to monitor and diagnose conditions in many parts of the body. Some men’s and women’s health tests including testicular, gynaecological and pregnancy scans can be carried out using ultrasound. The scanner uses the same technology as the sonar used by ships. A probe is passed over an

area of the body, the sound waves bounce off internal organs and passed back through a probe to a computer – which can turn these waves into images. An X-Ray machine produces a burst of high energy radiation which passes through the body to produce an image on a film or detector. The images are then used to show bone and some soft tissue in an area specified by a healthcare professional. You cannot see or feel an X-ray, they are a quick and simple way of looking at the inner body. Following a scan, reports are securely emailed to the patient’s GP with end to end encryption to protect patients’ privacy. Dr Farrell ends: “As a doctor who works in hospital every day it is easy to forget how scary having investigations is, as we often expect the worst case scenario. A wonderful part of my job is being able to explain the results of the scan and reassure patients when nothing is wrong and see the relief on their face. Last week a lady broke down in tears, as she had expected to get bad news.” Scans are available to both insured and self-paying patients. Scalp Micropigmentation For Women

A

lbeit less common, men are not alone when it comes to suffering from pattern baldness. Women are also susceptible to this affliction, owing to life changing events and genetics. Stress is a predominant factor, whereas childbirth and genealogy are also key players, unfortunately.

Scalp Micropigmentation For Women Scalp micropigmentation for women is becoming an increasingly popular treatment for hair loss in female clients. It can make a considerable difference to a woman’s life, regarding both general aesthetics and psychological wellbeing. So Scalp micropigmentation is not just for men. Significant thickening effects are possible when the procedure is used to treat female hair loss as well. We have many female pattern hair loss success stories.

Female Hair Loss Treatment Often referred to as scalp tattooing, scalp micropigmentation is a technique that offers a camouflaging solution to pattern balding, both for men and women. The scalp is effectively ‘shaded’, reducing the contrast between the hair and the scalp, creating the illusion of thicker, fuller hair. However, it doesn’t come without a serious dose of contemplation and research. It’s clear that if you are already suffering from hair thinning, you’ll not want to make matters worse by damaging your locks that are already in existence. Additionally, it’s crucial to note that the general pattern in which women lose their hair is considerably different to that of their male counterparts. Female pattern baldness hairstyles don’t have to be a daunting challenge, not when you can have scalp pigmentation with Skalptec.

Meet the team The Lamb Inn at Edgmond is now under new management, so come and meet the team at this family and dog friendly pub. Lance and Debbie and their family have moved in to the Lamb Inn and are breathing love into the food and cosy surroundings. You will find Debbie in the kitchen where she is head chef and has a wealth of experience having worked both as a food lecturer and in some of the most prestigious hotels and pubs in Shropshire. Lance on the other hand has a background in hotel operations management so you will meet him as front of house manager. Together they make a very dynamic team. Along with the couple, Debbie’s brother James and their three dogs are also resident at the Inn. The couple are bringing their values to the pub by using locally sourced produce including meats, cheeses and vegetables. Daily (Monday to Saturday) you can get your hands on an afternoon tea for two and every Sunday they deliver a traditional roast lunch. They also have a range of special offers on the go, so be sure to

check the website and get a date in your diary. If you are vegetarian, vegan or have any allergies, the team will cater for your needs. Since moving in, Lance and Debbie have held a number of successful events including a fundraising auction and even a beer festival. And they are continuing with some party nights across the 13, 14, 20 and 21 December to celebrate their first upcoming Christmas at the pub. Bring the kids because Santa will be there with some presents! As with so many communities, it is increasingly important to have a defibrillator available as it can take time in rural areas for help to arrive in an emergency. Lance and Debbie are fundraising to have a defibrillator installed outside the pub as the onus falls on the community to come together to finance one. Christmas Day is now sold out, but the Christmas fayre menu is available throughout December and if you hurry you and your family can celebrate New Years Eve at the ticket only party with gourmet buffet and live music to see in 2020. Contact the team at The Lamb Inn, they are keen to welcome you into the homely atmosphere and give you the best experience possible. Chicken, Leek and Chorizo Pie Recipe courtesy of Rukmini Iyer at The Happy Foodie

This quick recipe will feed your family midweek and give them a nice warm feeling with a delicious chicken and chorizo combination

Ingredients

2 leeks, very finely sliced 4 small chicken breasts, cut into large chunks 120g chorizo, diced 300g crème fraîche Half a lemon, zest and juice

1 teaspoon sea salt flakes (optional) Freshly ground black pepper 1 egg, beaten 1 320g ready-rolled puff pastry sheet

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan/200°C/gas 6. Tip the leeks into a bowl, pour over a kettleful of boiling water, and leave to steep for 2 minutes while you get on with prepping the other ingredients. Drain the leeks well in a colander, then tip into a roasting tin along with the chopped chicken, chorizo, crème fraiche, lemon zest and juice, salt (if using) and a good grind of black pepper. Give everything a good mix, then brush the edges of the roasting tin with a little beaten egg and lay the pastry on top. Use your thumbs or a fork to press the edges of the pastry against the edges of the tin – don’t worry about any overhang. Brush with the beaten egg, then cut a cross in the middle for steam to escape. You can add cut shapes from the excess pastry and stick them on top with a little beaten egg, if you’re feeling artistic. Transfer to the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and golden brown. Let the pie sit for 5 minutes before serving hot.

Festive cheers! With Christmas just around the corner festive drinks are in full swing. As well as mulling gallons of wine and cider this year we have also been playing around with hot toddies to keep the cold out, and my personal favourite, is a Rum Toddy. Your spiced rum of choice, maple syrup, a squeeze of lemon, a cinnamon stick and hot water make a warming and soothing drink perfect to fend off winter snuffles whilst getting in the Christmas spirit. Depending on my mood I either use Barthi Ddhu Welsh Seaweed Spiced Rum or Blue Monkey Banana Rum. Now we are in winter, stronger and darker beers are becoming more popular by the hour. This year Belgian classics such as Chimay, Kwak and Delirium Tremens seem to be immensely popular, probably due to their unsurpassed depth of flavour and the extra boozy kick they have. The other craze we are seeing is cocktails of course and on Saturday nights our signature craft cocktails are flying out. I can’t give away our secret recipes, especially for our legendary Bailey Head Espresso Martini, but if you are hosting a Christmas or New Years party this year and want some great cocktails, do check out Difford’s Guide online for inspiration and a range of drinks varying in complexity from beginner to advanced. We have already taken some Christmas spirits orders for people wanting special bottles of craft spirits and artisan beers for Christmas. Please come and see us as soon as possible if there is something special you are looking for this year! Cheers, and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!! Xx

Mulled Wine Ingredients

2 clementines 1 lemon 1 lime 200g caster sugar 6 whole cloves 1 cinnamon stick 3 fresh bay leaves 1 whole nutmeg , for grating 1 vanilla pod 2 bottles Chianti or other Italian red wine 2 star anise

Method

1. Peel large sections from the clementines, lemon and lime. 2. Put sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the pieces of peel and squeeze in the clementine juice. 3. Add cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and 10 to 12 gratings of nutmeg. Halve the vanilla pod lengthways, add to the pan then stir in enough red wine to cover the sugar. 4. Let simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved into the red wine, then bring to the boil. Keep on a rolling boil for 4-5 minutes, or until you’ve got a beautiful thick syrup. 5. When your syrup is ready, turn the heat down to low and add your star anise and the rest of the wine. Gently heat the wine, when it’s warm, ladle it into heatproof glasses and serve.

Salted Caramel Cheesecake Recipe courtesy of Taming Twins, tamingtwins.com

This no bake, light and creamy dessert is a delight after any meal and a must for salted caramel fans! Alternatively, top with chocolate shavings for a different flavour.

INGREDIENTS

250 g Digestive biscuits 125 g Butter Unsalted, melted 450 ml Double cream whipped until it forms medium soft peaks (like soft serve ice cream) 100 g Icing Sugar sifted

2 280g Tubs of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Full fat Juice of half a lemon 794 g Carnation Caramel (2 x 397g tins) Sea salt flakes

Method

Crush the biscuits until they look like lumpy sand (or use a food processor). Mix with the melted butter and press into your 7 inch tin. Combine the whipped cream, icing sugar, cream cheese, lemon juice and half of one tin of caramel (about 200g). Fold in gently until fully combined. Smooth on top of the biscuit base, dotting the remainder of one of the tins of caramel through it as you go (about 200g) and flatten the top with the back of a spoon or a palette knife if you have one. Pop into the freezer for two hours or into the fridge over night. Remove the cheesecake from the tin. Pour the rest of the caramel over the top. Sprinkle with the sea salt. Alternatively, if you have more of a sweet tooth, shave some of your favourite chocolate over the top.

Green Fields gotta lotta bottle!

The vending machine at Green Fields Farm Shop is helping customers make a greener choice

Taylor’s Organic Dairy based in the heart of Shropshire, have installed Telford’s first milk vending machine at Green Fields, Donnington. In a drive to save plastic, customers buy one litre glass bottles to keep as their own and fill them at the machine. Full fat and semi skimmed milk can be dispensed between 6.30am and 6pm on a daily basis and payment is at the machine with a contactless card for convenience. Just when you might have run out of milk, you can pop to the farm shop for a re-fill. The milk is pasteurised (a process used involving heating the milk to kill bacteria) but not homogenised (processing the milk so the cream does not separate), giving it a flavour reminiscent of childhood and the cream even settles at the top of the bottle! It really

is a taste sensation and customers are welcome to sample the milk before they buy. Taylor’s are keen to install machines across Shropshire to diversify the dairy from selling milk in bulk. The return per litre far exceeds sending their milk away in tankers, although they have invested substantially in the equipment needed to carry out the pasteurisation. The farm owns the vending machine and the sales go directly to the farmer, with a small return for Green Fields farm shop, for the running of the machine. So if you miss having the milkman, this is the alternative way to have that fresh milk in the traditional glass bottles. With the added bonus, Taylor’s milk is organic. The vending machine can be found at Green Fields Farm Shop, Station Road, Donnington, Telford, TF2 8JY. Tel 01952 677345

Pat Parkes, owner of the Shropshire Ice Cream Company with some of the delicious range of both dairy and vegan ice creams

Vegan ice-cream scoops up top awards The Shropshire Ice Cream Company are having an exciting year. Their new range of vegan ice cream has had a far from icy reception. At the 2019 Great Taste Awards, out of 12,772 products sent in from over 100 different countries and only around half of entries obtaining stars, The Shropshire Ice Cream Company received awards for both its vegan chocolate ice cream and vegan salted caramel ice cream in the ‘dairy-free, ready to serve’ category. This means judges dubbed it as a food that delivers fantastic flavour. The Telford based company also produce real dairy ice creams and sorbets without the addition of additives and hydrogenated fats. Great news for ice cream lovers! The local ice cream connoisseurs served up ice cream in a virtual reality session at Shropshire BizFest and have attended local food events across the region, whilst expanding their range and offering. Following further investment in machinery and equipment, the artisan food producer is now in a position to expand the number of restaurants, ice cream parlours, farm shops and delis that it supplies to in the county. 22 | It’s beautiful

with less air than that found in cheaper alternatives.”

Our aim is to source ingredients as responsibly as possible, whether that is local, in season fruit, or products from further afield that use ethical practices.

Owner, Pat Parkes, explains why ice cream is always in season: “Ice creams and sorbets have become a year-round staple, whether it is for a night-in treat on the sofa or as a perfect dessert at a dinner party or on a restaurant menu. It is adored by all no matter what age, weather or occasion!” Pat also said, “Our aim is to source ingredients as responsibly as possible, whether that is local, in season fruit, or products from further afield that use ethical practices. We are very proud of the ice cream we make. We use quality ingredients and traditional methods to produce our ice creams, which results in a creamier more luxurious taste,

“We would love to see our ice cream stocked in more places, whose priority is to buy products from the surrounding area. Nationally, restaurants have noticed a surge in demand for high quality dessert choices that match the care and consideration of their main courses, and with consumers becoming increasingly conscious about the provenance of their food, the local dessert menu can now extend to Shropshire made ice cream and sorbets! We also love working with imaginative chefs in our development kitchen where we create interesting flavours for their customers.” If you are a restaurant, bar, shop or otherwise in the food industry and interested in providing locally made, delicious ice creams to your customers, please contact Pat to discuss your opportunity.

Blue and gold

Christmas gold is a given, and gold against blue has a rich and regal feel to it that can work beautifully in any home without having to break the bank. You can choose anything from navy and brass, indigo and a yellow based gold or royal blue with antique gold. It really doesn’t matter which tones you go for. Bold colours work particularly well when paired with other bold colours so gold is perfect as it gives you the metallic element, the neutral element and bold all in one. It’s a dramatic and daring look but will feel welcoming and warm at the same time. Velvet complements this scheme perfectly and adds an air of winter sophistication. And adding in some animal decorations in both colours with lighting in unexpected shapes will keep it looking modern. Here are some glorious golden ideas that work perfectly with blue interiors. If you bear Goldilocks in mind when choosing all that gold; ‘not too little and not too much’ you should be just fine.

Bright colours are injected into Newgate’s latest clock designs too. The dial on the new Triptick clock collection was influenced by the G6. It features a triptych of multicoloured subdials to match the new G6 watch range. Reflecting Newgate’s colourful new vision across both clocks and watches for the new season. Talking about Newgate’s latest designs, Jim explains; ‘We wanted to do something completely different this season. The colours in the G6 dials were inspired by motor racing decals. And my grandfather’s influence over me ultimately led me

This season the duo decided they wanted to shake up the watch market and add some colour. Clashing contemporary brights with high-spec functionality to create a stand-out watch range. Designed in Newgate’s Oswestry-based design studio, by Jim, the G6 range is a modern collection of women’s and men’s Chronograph watches, featuring multicoloured triptych sub-dials with stopwatch and date function.

The husband-and-wife team combine the worlds of fashion and interiors to create design-led, affordable and high-quality clocks and watches. The brand diversified (naturally) into watches in 2015, to bring their distinctive design DNA to the fashion world. Translating Newgate’s most iconic designs into contemporary wristwear.

Jim has also introduced interchangeable straps for the first time in this range. Each G6 watch comes with one handcrafted black Italian leather strap and one lightweight, colourful striped canvas strap, for two different dress styles. This is a new generation of watch design for Newgate.

Eddie has always had a big influence on Jim’s passion for moving-part design and his fascination with the instrumentation used in the measurement of time. So, Jim knew the G6 range was the one to honour his late grandfather. He’s even included Morse Code inscriptions on the back of the leather strap as a nod to Eddie.

Delivery of house and baby Standing in her stunning home, looking out to a beautiful view of Rodney’s Pillar and Snowdonia mountains in the distance, Architect Camilla Monk can reflect on a job well done after months of hard work to completely refurbish the building, which was in line to be demolished before she and her husband fell in love with it. The couple took on the project at their home in Myddle, near Shrewsbury, which meant living under a huge scaffold tent for several months - but it was certainly worth the hard work. The house has more than doubled in value, and the family has increased in size as well - Camilla was heavily pregnant while managing the build, which added even more pressure to the project. Camilla, who runs her own company ARCHITECTURE: Ventures, says: “The house, Mount Pleasant, was a total wreck, damp up to shoulder height and the back of the old section of the house, dating back to the 1600s, was collapsing at the corner due to water undermining the sand on clay ground. “It was very much a heart over head decision, but we could see its true potential.” The couple started serious work on the house in 2016, and quickly 46 | It’s beautiful

realised the scale of the task ahead of them - especially with a young family to look after. “It was a huge project and we lived in the house throughout the build with our three young boys, aged three and under,” Camilla says. “The build started in November so we lived under a huge scaffold tent for nine months while the main structural work and re-roofing was completed. “I project managed the build and actually went into labour with our fourth, Tabitha, as the large rear windows were being fitted - it was an exciting day on two counts! “My husband Simon acted as the client and I took on my architect role - this gave me the stability to complete a personal project in a professional way. “The brief was simple, maximise the views and natural light, keep the scale of any extensions in keeping with the delicate proportions of the existing elm-beamed cottage, and include some ‘wow’ features. “Simon says the house exceeds expectations - so I’m pleased! We can’t quite believe how far it has come and are very proud we saved it from possible demolition.” Another project close to Camilla’s heart was for a client in Shrewsbury, who wanted more living space in

their historic property which was a listed building. The finished project demonstrates one of Camilla’s key objectives when working with clients who want to extend their homes - you don’t always need to build to get more space. “It’s a great example of how redesigning the existing space achieves the desired outcome of a better living environment,” she says. “People often think they need to physically build an extension, but that’s not always the case. “The client wanted a new bedroom over the kitchen but instead we created a first-floor library link to the existing spare room located above the coach house, making this bedroom accessible from the upstairs landing rather than from the original kitchen. “We simply used what she already had to fulfil this aspect of her wish list. Relocating the existing kitchen into the extension was a bold move but necessary to create the right ‘flow’ through the house.” Again, the project gave an impressive return on investment, adding at least a third to the value of the property. Camilla can be contacted by calling 07834 206207.

A winter wedding can be a beautiful affair. The temperature is brisk so the bridal party and guests can really take advantage of wrapping up in gorgeous, luxurious fabrics. Dresses will sparkle in the winter sunshine and if you have a snowy day, the romance of the season will really show in those photos. For guests, outfits veer towards heavy and glamorous fabrics such as tweed, wool and satin in rich seasonal colours. For the ladies if you choose to wear a headpiece, hats pointing towards leafy shapes work exceptionally well and will complement the changes seen through the season.

ingredients and preparing meals from scratch. Meal planning and shopping lists proved to be key to their success. Adopting healthier eating habits, with a small amount of regular exercise, really encouraged the pounds to drop off quickly. Even with holidays and family events, Tim achieved his target loss of four stone in six months with his local Slimming World group.

with support and friendship along the way Tim and Rose’s journey started in 2016 when Rose decided that her weight gain was not healthy and she wanted to lose weight as a necessity. Rose used a fitness tracker whilst watching what she was eating. In twelve months she lost an amazing two stone. During that time, Tim thought he was due an NHS health check having turned 50. He didn’t have any health issues but the nurse offered him a 12-week referral to Slimming World based on his weight at the time. So in 2017, Tim joined his local Slimming World group in The Forest of Dean. After his first meeting, he survived his first few days on lots of fruit and pasta. His first weigh in provided a very surprising but welcome 10.5lb loss. Tim used the Slimming World extra easy plan, trying new

When they moved to Newport in 2018, Tim and Roses’ priority was to find the local Slimming World group. They both say, the support and friendship they found in the group was amazing with Rose achieving a total weight loss of 7 Stone. Tim maintains that being able to buy and look good in normal sized clothes is a huge positive. They both have more energy, a more active lifestyle and a healthier future. Support from the group and Debbie the consultant has been invaluable for them. Despite some ups and downs, Tim and Rose remain at target and maintain the benefits of attending their group regularly. The perils of the staff Christmas party With Christmas around the corner, many of us will be looking forward to (or quietly dreading!) the annual festive staff party. The Christmas work do often involves plenty of alcohol - which can lead to unfortunate consequences for those who over-indulge. John Merry, head of employment law at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, says employees and employers need to be mindful of their responsibilities to avoid some potentially awkward conversations when everyone is sober and back in work.

of have had a cash bar - which encouraged many employees to get ‘tanked up’ before their arrival. “Similarly, a free bar for a limited time can encourage binge drinking. In contrast, a free bar, excluding shots for example, can actually result in more measured consumption.

He says: “The key point is that a staff party, although usually outside working hours and away from the employer’s premises, will still be part of the ‘work environment’, which means the employer will be at risk of liability for employees’ actions.

“The most important thing is for employers to remind staff in advance of a Christmas party that they want everybody to have a good time – and as part of that, alcohol consumption will not be accepted as an excuse for misconduct.”

“Over the years we have dealt with cases involving punch ups, an axe-wielding employee, and the scaling, and bringing down, of a large Christmas tree - so there is plenty of reason for employers to beware! “It stands to reason that the more alcohol is consumed, the more chance there will be that standards of behaviour will slip. For this reason, employers might be wary of offering a free bar - but not doing so when one has been provided before can be damaging to staff relations, and the alternatives can have their own dangers.

Another thing everyone should be aware of - not just at Christmas, but at any time of the year - is the risk of being over the legal drink drive limit the morning after.

“Some staff events with high levels of drunkenness that I am aware

Stephen Scully, a solicitor advocate at Lanyon Bowdler specialising in driving offences, says: “You need to be careful when driving the morning after a drink - information recently issued by a police force indicated you should allow up to three-and-a-half hours per large glass of wine before driving. That adds up to 14 hours if you have had four large glasses of wine, which may be a surprise to a lot of people.”

RJAH surgeon celebrates

Miss Karen Shepherd with the Alan Darby Prize.

A surgeon at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, has been awarded a prestigious prize for a research paper written during her time as an orthopaedic fellow at the hospital. Miss Karen Shepherd, who is now a consultant orthopaedic and oncological surgeon, was awarded the Alan Darby Prize in musculoskeletal tumours for her research paper, which focused on prostate cancer and bone disease. The Alan Darby Prize is awarded to the trainee who publishes the most prestigious research paper on tumours and is named after Dr Alan Darby, a former consultant orthopaedic pathologist at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. The doctor’s wife established the award in 2005. Karen said: “I am absolutely honoured, and still completely in shock, to be the latest winner of the Alan Darby Prize. “My paper focused on factors that influence prognosis and the expected development of metastatic bone disease in prostate cancer. “I didn’t at all expect it to be considered the most prestigious paper out of my fellowship year.” Karen, who works on Montgomery Unit at the Oswestry-based hospital, was announced the winner at the annual meeting of the Old Oswestrians’ Club – a society founded in 1952 with the aim for former Oswestry and Stoke trainees to exchange professional ideas. Karen added: “Since I published the paper, I’ve gone on to my first consultant appointment at RJAH, working with patients who have primary bone cancers and metastatic bone disease as well as 70 | It’s beautiful

Before I decided to train as a doctor, I was a qualified therapeutic radiographer and also completed a PhD in quality of life and cancer treatment outcomes, which is where my passion lies.

soft tissue tumours. This was always part of my long-term ambition as a trainee. “Before I decided to train as a doctor, I was a qualified therapeutic radiographer and also completed a PhD in quality of life and cancer treatment outcomes, which is where my passion lies. “The team I work with in the tumour service, are forerunners in tumour research and I feel very privileged to be working alongside them.” Karen has been a consultant with the tumour team for one year, and in this time has received several other accolades as well as the Alan Darby Prize. She said: “My first year as a consultant really has been so memorable. Already I have been working as an academic and clinical supervisor to orthopaedic trainees in our unit. I was nominated for Trainer of the Year by Charlotte Tunstall, specialist registrar. She worked so hard and became very much part of our team. “I also received a nomination in the Patient Choice Award for the

Trust’s Celebration of Achievement Awards, which felt really special. I am lucky to work with very special individuals”. RJAH has a research department based on site and the hospital recognises the importance of research carried out by its staff. Staff are encouraged to become involved with research as it is how new treatments are developed and provides support for new ways of treating disease. Without departments like these, there would be no progress and it proves the importance of supporting hospitals, as they are much more than a place we go when we need help. They help create the steps towards solutions.

Friends, supporters and staff of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin attended the launch of the Platinum Appeal at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

Dementia and Loneliness Support Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin needs your help to reach an ambitious fundraising target of £150,000. The charity is focused on helping older people in the community. The Platinum Appeal, launched in November 2019, marks the 70th anniversary of the charity’s work and seeks to raise vital money for services. Ten years ago there were an estimated 110,000 older people in Shropshire, making up 24% of the population. By 2026 this will have risen to 28% and will rise to over a third in the next 10 to 15 years. The fundraising drive, which runs until November 2021, covers three main areas of service: Information & Advice, Dementia Support and Loneliness. Launching the appeal at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “Loneliness is a huge issue in society today and our befriending service has been running since we started in 1950. “People tell us: ‘Many of us would be lost without people like you…’ and describe our services as a ‘life-saver.’ By supporting our Platinum Appeal

and helping us reach our £150,000 target you will be helping the people who really need us.’ All money raised will go to Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin which is an independently funded local charity providing services for older people in the county. Heather Osborne added: “Last year we raised £3.25 million in benefits for older people and we estimate that 7,000 in the county are living with dementia. In addition to our 11 dementia support groups there is also a need for respite and support for carers so it’s crucial we expand those services. We are always looking at ways we can grow and develop and meet those needs.” Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin offers a range of services for older people in the county. These include: Information and Advice, Day Centres, dementia support, the Help at Home Service, volunteer befriending visitors, Home from Hospital services, Pub Clubs, Living Well activities, Benefits Advice, and Advocacy on behalf of older people. Last year over 100,000 volunteer hours were given to support older people. Follow on Twitter @AgeUK_STW - use the hash tags #AGEUKSTW70 and #PlatinumAppeal.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT It takes a lot of nerve to jump out of a plane at 10,000 feet and skydive for charity, but Sally Raw-Rees did just that to raise money for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.

acted as our listening service and helped us find a way through. It was such a relief to have Age UK on board. It meant I had someone to talk to and the family got the help we needed.”

She decided to take the plunge after receiving what she describes as ‘amazing support’ from the charity who supported her family through a difficult time.

Sally believes that the older generation often struggle to ask for help, as self-sufficiency and pride can stop them picking up the phone.

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin provides vital information and advice, advocacy and benefits guidance for older people and their families. Last year we claimed back £3.25 million in additional benefits - and fundraising activities like Sally’s skydive help us continue this important work. Sally, who works in estate management at an independent school in Cheshire, says, “They

‘There is help out there,’ she says. ‘And I’ve learnt that it’s important to take a deep breath and listen when an older person is telling you their problems. They are of a very different generation, and don’t always like to speak up.” Sally raised more than £900 for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin when she performed a tandem skydive at Skydive Tilstock Freefall Club in Whitchurch.

If you’d like to learn more about how to fundraise so we can continue the vital work we do supporting older people across the region, call Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin on 01743 233123 or download our fundraising pack from the Age UK website at ageuk.org.uk/shropshireandtelford/

Varicose vein myth-busting If you stand all day, you’ll get varicose veins Standing all day will not cause varicose veins to appear. However, if you already have them, your symptoms will get worse. Varicose veins are a simple cosmetic problem Incorrect. Varicose veins are a vascular disease. Not only that, they are a progressive vein disease. What does this mean? If you don’t get them treated right away, they will get worse over time. They are a real disease that can cause people who have them a lot of pain.

Revolutionary new treatment for varicose veins Vein Solutions is a Cheshire-based private service specialising in modern techniques for the treatment of varicose and thread veins. It is run by Mr Sameh Dimitri, an experienced consultant vascular surgeon. Vein Solutions offers the latest techniques in treating veins without the need for general anaesthesia. This is in the form of state of the art, innovative VenaSeal glue injections. This exciting, revolutionary treatment, not yet widely available, does not require local anaesthesia or compression stockings. Vein Solutions also offers a walk in, walk out service using minimally invasive procedures such as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), foam sclerotherapy and radio frequency ablation of veins (VNUS). Vein Solutions also offers treatment of thread veins with the use of microsclerotherapy and Veinwave techniques. Treatment for facial veins, arm veins, breast veins, vaginal/vulval veins and pelvic congestion syndrome is also available. All treatments are undertaken under local anaesthetic (as required) in about one hour.

Mr Sameh Dimitri

Vein Solutions also provide wrinkle reduction injections and dermal fillers. More details about treatments and a price list are available from Vein Solutions. Call free on 0800 043 1997 or visit www.veinsolutions.co.uk

Running will cause varicose veins This is simply not true. In fact, the opposite is true! It’s always a good thing to exercise, and moving your legs makes your blood start pumping. In turn, your circulation becomes better. Getting your blood flowing actually helps the fight against varicose veins. The only treatment is to remove the vein Incorrect. There are now new, noninvasive treatments that can be done in one day. These include Endovenus Laser Ablation (EVLA) and Ultrasound Guided Therapy (UGS). Both have high success rates. Men cannot get varicose veins While it is more likely that women will develop this condition more than men, it happens to men more often than you would think. About 45% of those diagnosed with the disease are men. Varicose veins can happen to anyone at any time in life, man or woman. In fact, more than 30% of the population are affected by varicose veins. Crossing your legs cause varicose veins This is definitely one of the more popular myths when it comes to varicose veins. But don’t worry- cross your legs all you want. Varicose veins occur when the valves in your legs get weakened and damaged. While your valves normally keep your blood flowing, when something happens to damage your valves, your blood pools up. This is what causes varicose veins to appear, not crossing your legs. It’s beautiful | 81
