Why this petition matters

Started by Kenzie Harstad

Hamline Public Safety recently changed their uniforms. This change in uniforms has given off a negative public view and negative student view. "When students brought up the concern of these uniforms, they were told by the head of Public Safety that Public Safety was not here for the students but only here for the campus." The uniforms changed from a regular polo to a bulletproof vest and a police-issued belt (which can hold police-issued weapons). Some students were told that Public Safety will be changing their uniforms towards a more "approachable" look, however, the new uniforms do the complete opposite. This change has caused many students to feel discomfort and unsafe, on the campus that they call home. This unsafe feeling has also caused students to not be able to call Hamline their home. Students have also felt a disconnect from Hamline after they were told that Public Safety was only here for the campus and not the students. Hamline University is not defined as a campus without its students, so shouldn't Public Safety be here for the students. Especially when we live in the Twin Cities and we have watched police brutality happen in our own communities, our Public Safety officers look like cops. How is that supposed to feel safe? How does that make them approachable?
