CMD Day Topic: Scriptural Paratexts - Insights Hidden In Plain Sight

Date: Tuesday 11th February 2025
Timings: Coffee from 10am, Start 10:30am, Finish by 3:30pm
Venue: St James-the-Less, 11a John's Place, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 7EL
Speaker: Prof Garrick Allen

Prof Garrick is going to share with us his innovative research in the area of 'paratexts', i.e. all those bits in our Bibles that are extra to the translated text. We are talking everything from chapter headings, to images, to notes in the margins...anything that is additional to the text. There will be 3 sessions:
  * Session One: Exploring paratexts.
  * Session Two: Getting to grips with paratexts for ourselves.
  * Session Three: The impact of paratexts in ministry and mission today.

You can watch a video introducing the topic, and why Prof Garrick got involved, here: https://youtu.be/UIykXTuZ5nE?feature=shared and an update to the work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n914_R6_0FM.

Prof Allen completed his PhD at St Andrew's University in 2015. He spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal/Bethel, where he contributed to the production of a new Greek critical edition of the book of Revelation. From 2016 to 2020 he was Associate Professor in New Testament Studies at Dublin City University. He moved to Glasgow in 2020, and was appointed Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism a few years later.
