Study Title: Mathematics Education Doctorates – Experiences and Expertise

Principal Investigator: Dr. Scott A. Courtney
Co-Principal Investigator: Dr. Anita N. Alexander

You are being invited to participate in a research study. This consent form will provide you with information on the research project, what you will need to do, and the associated risks and benefits of the research. Your participation is voluntary. Please read this form carefully. It is important that you ask questions and fully understand the research in order to make an informed decision.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to examine the experiences, expertise, and practices of individuals with, or working toward, a doctorate in mathematics education (or didactics in mathematics). When we ask about a doctorate in mathematics education (or didactics of mathematics), please think about this degree broadly. For example, in the United States you can obtain a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration (or focus) in Mathematics Education and be considered as possessing a Doctorate in Mathematics Education. Finally, by “doctorate” we mean PhD, EdD, DA, DPhil, and so forth; that is, the most advanced degree available in the field.

ProceduresYour participation will last from July 15, 2023, to September 15, 2024. Participation will consist of completing an online survey (15-20 minutes) regarding the expertise you have developed as someone with or working toward, a doctorate in mathematics education (or didactics of mathematics) and the experiences that contributed to your development of this expertise. Finally, the study will examine participants’ aggregated survey responses.

BenefitsWhile you are not guaranteed any direct benefits, your participation may benefit the larger mathematics education community and the education of mathematics teacher educators.
