Happy Fall!

We're excited to share the fall 2018 Square Foot Gardening Foundation newsletter, One Square Foot at a Time with you. It is packed full of information about fall gardening (or spring if you're in the Southern Hemisphere), including a bonus Fall Planting Chart from the new book! We also have a great article about Square Foot Gardening in schools, and tips about composting. We hope you enjoy it and we'd love it if you'd share the link once you've read it.

Would you like your Square Foot Garden to be featured in our next newsletter? Please send pictures, your first name, and your location to info@squarefootgardening.org. We look forward to seeing you grow.

Happy Gardening!

Composting Quick Tips
If you want to start composting, fall is the ideal time. You'll have plenty of carbon-rich leaves that will break down into crumbly, nutritious compost to add to your Mel's Mix™. Toss the leaves together with disease-free summer plants from your Square Foot Gardens and you're in business.
Mel's four tips to get good-quality compost quickly are:
1. Mix: Add in as many different plant-based materials as you can find.
2. Mash: Chop everything into fine pieces.
3. Moisten: Not dry, not wet—just moist.
4. Move: Keep turning the pile toward the center, where all the action is.

Calling all Teachers!
When Wisconsin teacher Jodie Visker wrote to us with pictures of her students tending their Square Foot Gardens we knew we had to share her story with you.

She says, "I always recommend SFG to other aspiring school garden coordinators because it works with children, and works with large groups in general, and it is so low-maintenance. I can’t imagine a better method to use when working with several students at a time. Thanks to the use of the grid and the 4-by-4-foot beds, I can simply model an example of how to plant a square, then let students work independently on their own square without having to supervise each one."

In the fall newsletter, you can read all about her school gardens and get ideas for starting your own.
