Paul’s suffering, rightly understood

Paul wants the Colossians to know about his suffering on his behalf. Is it because he wants sympathy? Because he fancies himself a martyr?


 Discovery Questions

Self-reflection:

Read Colossians 1:24 - 2:2. How do you typically respond to suffering (no matter the cause)? Can your suffering be strategic for God’s purpose? Can all of your suffering be strategic for God’s purpose?

With your family:

Play hide and seek. Then discuss how the truth about Jesus as “hidden” for a long time, but now is revealed for everyone.

With your small group:

  1. Read Colossians 1:24 - 2:2
  2. What stands out to you in these verses? Why?
  3. What bothers you about these verses? Why?
  4. Discuss the self-reflection question above.
  5. Spend some time in group helping each other brainstorm about how your present suffering might be strategic.
  6. Given this passage, what should you do this week?
