Lafayette Teaching Excellence

Featuring  2019 - 2020
Distinguished Teaching Fellows

I wanted to be a better one-on-one writing mentor particularly for Lafayette students who have a desire or a need to write a long piece of research-based writing. How do you get them from start to finish? I wanted to use the fellowship to pursue this goal more intentionally.

-Brett Hendrickson, Associate Professor, Religious Studies

As a graduate student I was always interested in professional development that focused on inclusive teaching. When I came to Lafayette, I found that CITLS events around inclusive teaching were a highlight and an important part of being a faculty member. On top of this, I am a prejudice researcher. I have transferred what I have learned from all of these experiences to my own class and so I felt that the fellowship was a good fit for continuing to pursue my efforts in inclusive teaching.

-Angela Bell, Assistant Professor, Psychology

Announcing 2020 - 2021
CITLS Distinguished Teaching Fellows

CITLS is pleased to announce that Dave Sunderlin, Associate Professor of Geology, and Chris Phillips, Professor of English, are the 2020 - 21 CITLS Distinguished Teaching Fellows. Both fellows were selected by the CITLS Faculty Advisory Board and will pursue important topics during this time of uncertainty and move to various online teaching modalities.

Dave Sunderlin will focus his fellowship period on field-based pedagogy which involves active, engaged learning experiences. During his fellowship year, he plans to showcase what fieldwork looks like across disciplines, integrate work he has already started in creating virtual field teaching resources for students, and further excellence in field-based pedagogy through the scholarship of teaching and learning. His efforts will be highly relevant during this time period as we consider various ways to engage our learners regardless of modality.

Given the increasing number of student mental health and well-being concerns prior to and during the COVID-19 crisis, and their implications on teaching and learning, CITLS will offer programming and resources on these topics in the coming year. Chris Phillip’s focus on contemplative pedagogy will align with these goals and our Lafayette values to teach the whole student. Contemplative pedagogy continues to be embraced by instructors at institutions of higher education and have positive impacts.

You will hear more from Dave and Chris in the coming year! We thank all faculty who applied to the fellowship program.

Effective Writing Assignment Design

Are you considering designing or revising a writing assignment this summer? If so, please be aware that CITLS and the College Writing Program collaborated to create a resource that can help instructors to create meaningful, engaging and enjoyable writing assignments.
Special Announcement:
Preparing College Course Evaluation Form for Data Analysis

If you downloaded and distributed the College Course Evaluation Spring 2020 Form on Qualtrics before May 6th, please use this resource to recode the data so that your analysis matches the scale typically used on the form (e.g. Strongly Agree = 5, Agree = 4, etc.). Halfway down the resource you will see a section called "Recoding Values and Changing Variable Names," which will take you through the steps on how to recode values for Likert-scale questions. If you downloaded and used the form after May 6th, then your reports have already been modified to match what is typically seen on course evaluations at Lafayette. Please reach out to CITLS (citls@lafayette.edu) or ITS (help@lafayette.edu) with any questions.
