The Center for Bioethics and Humanities at SUNY Upstate Medical University is proud to present this year's Reiss Lecturer in Ethics and Equity, Dr. Ricardo Nuila.
Dr. Nuila is a writer, internist, and associate professor of medicine. His first book, The People's Hospital: Hope and Peril in American Medicine was featured on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, was a semi-finalist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and an Amazon Best Nonfiction Books of 2023.
Where do people in America lacking health insurance go when they're in need of help? The answer may surprise you. In this talk, which is shaped from his recently published book The People's Hospital: Hope and Peril in American Medicine, Ricardo Nuila, a practicing internal medicine doctor at Houston's largest public hospital, tells the story of the patients who struggle to find medical care and the surprising institution that provides them care. Could it be a model for reshaping American medicine?
