Welcome to the Brant Ave 2020-2021 school year!

We are looking forward to welcoming all of our new and returning students back to Brant Avenue this September!

As you are aware, the Upper Grand District School Board has put extensive plans in place for the school year.  Our school has now created plans that include both operational changes (how we manage the people and resources within the school) and health and safety changes (our response to the COVID pandemic).  We hope this document will help answer your questions about the specifics of the opening day and first week of school.

Please also look through our board Parent Handbook, for more detailed information about the changes for this school year.  There is also a link to the Board Website and the Parent Question and Answer (Q&A) page.

Staggered Entry

We will be having a “staggered entry” for all students this year. This means that all students will come to school with approximately half of their classmates on alternating days for the first two weeks of school.  This will allow us to carefully review and establish safety routines with fewer students in the building.  We are referring to these two groups as Cohort A and Cohort B. Cohorts are based on the First letter of a child’s last name (Cohort A is Last Name A-L & Cohort B is Last Name M-Z).  Parents will receive a phone message from the board identifying which cohort their child will be in. Cohorts will attend school as per the chart below:

Before Coming to School

COVID-19 Screening:

  • All parents must screen their children every day before leaving home for symptoms of COVID-19.  If there are symptoms, children need to stay home from school.  If COVID-19 is suspected, testing is recommended.
  • Link to self-screening tool

What to Bring to School

Please keep your child’s personal items to a minimum!  To support a safe and comfortable environment, students are asked to bring the following items clearly labelled with the student’s name:

  • Knapsack or tote bag for personal belongings
  • Face masks - they will need more than one
  • Personal water bottle
  • Seasonal outdoor wear (we are not requiring ‘indoor shoes’ at this time)
  • Only those items that are necessary for the day (e.g., pencil case, calculator, pens, pencils)
  • Students may bring their own devices, but they must be wiped by the student upon entry and before leaving at the end of the day, wipes will be provided.

Teachers will provide more details as to specific items required in specific classes, during the first two weeks of school. This year, students cannot bring toys, stuffies, outdoor recess equipment such as soccer balls, basketballs, hockey sticks etc.

Note: Students will be required to keep all personal belongings with them throughout the day.

Note: Additional information will be provided to families about how the school will help students manage winter boots and coats when cold weather arrives.

How Will I Know What Class My Child is In?

Your child’s teacher will call on September 8th or 9th.  Aside from introducing themselves, they will confirm start date information, provide class information and let you know where to meet on the first day. If you do not receive a call from the school, please come to the information table located at the front of the school on your designated first day and you will be directed to your class meeting location.

PLEASE NOTE: No changes to classes can be made.

First Day Procedures

Thursday Sept. 10th COHORT A & Friday Sept 11th COHORT B

Morning Drop Off: School Starts at 8:55 am.

Please do not arrive at the school grounds before 8:40 am.

NOTE: Students will be notified prior to September 8th about which class they are in, who their teacher is and where to line up on the tarmac behind the school.

Drop off procedures- Parents of younger children may walk with their child(ren) to the tarmac at the back of the school to help them find their class line and teacher. Teachers will be standing beside signs indicating their name and class. Parents are asked to respect the 2m+ distance rule at all times and to stay at least 2m+ away from the class lines. Once students have joined their line, parents are respectfully asked to provide space by departing, as we need to maintain physical distancing.

Kiss & Ride procedures- Kiss & Ride will still be operating as usual to start the school year.

Once out of their vehicle, children will be directed to the back tarmac to line up with their class and teacher. Please respect the bussing zone and only stop in the zone for student drop off by car.

Bus drop off info- Students who ride the bus will be dropped off at the front of the school and walk around to the back of the school with adult and bus patrol supervision. Reminder: the school buses will have designated seating for students that must be followed. Also all children on the bus are to wear masks at all times.

Riding the Bus- Students will wear masks while on the bus. Special circumstances may dictate that a student cannot wear a mask - please contact the school if needing to discuss this matter. There will be a seating plan for students riding the bus. The operator of the bus will be wearing PPE. The school board does not decide the COVID-19 safety protocols for student transportation. For more information, visit the STWDSTS website at https://stwdsts.ca.

Who will meet my child? All Brant teachers, ECEs and EAs will be out on the yard to greet students on the first days of school. They will be wearing vests and be easily identifiable. Homeroom teachers will be at their designated spot to welcome students to their class.

Can parents go on school property?  Parents are allowed on school property as long as they are respecting the 2m+ distance rule at all times.

Can parents enter the school? No, unfortunately parents/family members will not be allowed to enter the school building at any time. Calling or emailing teachers/office staff will be the only ways to connect with staff.

Can parents drop off medication? The Office Coordinator will be at a table at the front doors of the school on both first days of school between 8:30 and 9:00am. Parents will be able to drop off any medication and update any life threatening plans at this time. If you are unable to do this at that time, please make arrangements to do so as soon as possible by calling the office at 519-824-2671.

Designated Entry Doors:

To facilitate speedy entry in the morning and to limit unnecessary travel through the building, each grade/class will be assigned an entry/exit door. This will be the only door that students will use for entering the building, for accessing outdoor activities (and recess) and departing at the end of the school day. Safe entry and exit of the school will be thoroughly explained to all students by their teachers. Teachers will escort their students in and out of the school during each transition time in and outdoors.

School Greeters:

A “Greeter” will meet students at their assigned point of entry first thing in the morning.  Students will be reminded to put on a mask and to socially distance as they enter the building and they may assist with hand sanitizer.

Class Meeting location:

When arriving at school on the first day, students are to meet their teacher at the location that was shared during the welcome call you will have received on September 8 or 9. Signage will be set up outside to assist in finding that spot (this will be on the field area behind the school). Look for the large lawn sign with the teacher’s name. Please note, this will be the meeting spot for your child each day moving forward.

Late Arrival:

When a student is late (between 8:55 - 9:25), a Greeter will meet the student at the front doors and escort them in. After 9:25 parents will call the school at 519-824-2671. A staff member will meet the student at the front door to let them in, record the late arrival and get them to class safely.

Entering and Exiting the Building:

Entering- Only one class will enter a set of school doors at a time and they will be accompanied by their teacher or another staff member. Before entering the school, students will put on their masks. They will walk in single file keeping a safe space between them, use hand sanitizer and go directly to their classrooms.

Exiting- The same routines will be in place as entering the school except students will keep their masks on until they exit the building.

Recess Information:

Students will enter and exit using the procedures above. On the yard, there will be designated spaces for each individual class. Students from different classes will not be permitted to enter another class' space. To help with supervision on the yard, each student will be given a colour coded breakaway lanyard that will match his/her classmates. The lanyard will be able to be attached to the student’s  mask to keep it safe as well as help staff ensure students are staying in their class space on the yard.

To allow for greater distancing on the yard, students located in the “Junior Hall” (including all 4 - 6 students, the  3/4 class and the 2/3 class) will go outside for recess first, then return to class for their nutrition break. The students in the Primary Hall (1A and 2A) will first enjoy their nutrition break and then go outside.

Lunch Procedures:

Students will eat their lunch in their classrooms and be supervised by staff.

Please ensure your children can open the containers in their lunch independently. Practicing using the containers before school starts is a great way to ensure that they can be opened easily. If a container is stuck a trained staff member using appropriate hand hygiene could support in opening it.

End of Day Procedures:

All classes will exit the school at the designated entry/exit points at the end of the day and line up in their designated meeting area. Parents picking up their children can meet them there after 3:15pm. Everyone is encouraged to leave the school grounds quickly after dismissal to ensure safe distancing practices. Younger grade classes will have a check out system with the teachers to ensure all students are safe.
