Wild life It’s official, the autumn wardrobe has hit the shops. The trends featuring heavily this season are the black and white 80’s vibe, checks and the safari theme. I’m happy as I can dust off my white stilettos, but I’m also excited to bring 2018 in to these styles. Back in the jungle, the safari trend is with full-on animal prints or just a patch here and there. They were head to toe on the catwalk but approach with caution unless you’re feeling dangerous!

Style This is how you’ll find me...

layering up by Victoria Jane McKenna

2 Layering is best when the weather is constantly on the edge. Thankfully capes, scarfs and neutral tones are on trend and perfect for this. Mixing up smart and casual pieces gives an outfit a real edge. I don’t mind repeating items across outfits and here are three examples to consider now.

1. Animal Metallics

I steer towards metallic and love just a splash of the animal prints, so you can comfortably mix those without causing too much clash. It’s easy to meet the autumnal tones as well, so I’ve chosen a leather jacket, which feels really earthy alongside the animal theme.

2. Hats & Boots

This outfit is fun but really warm. You could change the t-shirt for a

8 | It’s beautiful

3 warmer top too, but the pleated skirt and earth tone scarf hit two trends. If it was a bit colder still you could add in grey woolly tights, which would break up the skirt and boots. This is a perfect weekend look.

3. Navy & Nude

It can be tricky to find the right jacket when you’re in a smarter dress. Nude shoes and the tan jacket enhance the navy without distracting from it. You could even pop a denim jacket on with this to make it more casual, but I think the leather brings a sharper look to the dress without compromising the prettiness of it. Medical Treatments I Cosmetic Treatments

Dr. Clare Patterson CONSULTANT DERMATOLOGIST

"Your well-being is at the core of everything I do..." I'm a consultant and I've been in dermatology since 2001. I've worked in hospitals and clinics all over the UK. I’ve also worked in Australia, where I completed a PhD in skin cancer, but I recently decided to move back home to Shropshire to be close to family.

TESTIMONIALS:

My medical training means that I can see through all the latest skincare fads, and my friendly, informal consultations are designed to help you establish a simple and effective treatment plan that will bring your skin back into balance. I also offer a range of treatments that can firm, tone and smooth the skin, including Botox and dermal fillers. I’ll work with you to decide on the most appropriate course of treatment, so that you’ll leave looking natural and relaxed, rather than frozen or fixed.

“Dr Clare is my secret weapon! She quickly and painlessly removed several unsightly skin tags that had been bothering me for years. She also prescribed a simple, inexpensive regimen to tackle the melasma that developed during my first pregnancy.” HELEN “Dr Clare is very easy to talk to and absolutely understands my skincare concerns. She’s much more friendly and approachable than my GP, who always made me feel that my hormonal breakouts were too trivial to discuss.” EMILY

I understand the impact that problem skin can have on your self-confidence, so I offer dedicated teen skin consultations to help bring stressed, hormonal skin back into balance. My specialist paediatric training means that I’m also qualified to work with younger children who suffer from common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis; I'm a mum myself, so I know how distressing skin irritations can be for young children and their families. I'm an experienced skin surgeon, and I'm fully-trained to remove anything unsightly or suspicious. Thanks to my specialist training in Australia, I have a special interest in skin cancer checks and mole removal. Many of my patients schedule annual checks; these are quick and easy, and give great peace of mind. Unlike many high street practitioners, I’m a fully trained Doctor specialising in skin, and have a thorough understanding of anatomy. This means that I can help you to hold back the years with BOTOX® and dermal fillers, while maintaining a natural, but refreshed, appearance.

“Thanks to Dr Clare, my skin has never looked this good. My adult acne began to improve after my first consultation six months on, my complexion is clear enough to go without make-up.” AMANDA

late night DATE Save the date for November 3 – the last of Shrewsbury Market Hall’s raved about Saturday late nights of the year. The award-winning market’s street food venues, bars and a range of retail stalls will be open up until 10pm. And in the run up to Christmas there will also be a spooky party for Halloween and a couple of festivethemed midweek late night events. The Saturday late nights, held four times a year, have become a huge hit since they launched in May 2017, attracting crowds of up to 1,700 people during the course of an evening. Facilities manager Kate Gittins said the unique events had caught the public imagination. “There is definitely something wonderful and special about being in the busy Market Hall at night with lots of people, all enjoying the food, drink and relaxed atmosphere. It’s like being part of one big street party,” she said.

“It’s like being part of one big street party” “People come with family and friends for something to eat and drink and have an evening mooch of the art, gift, book and vintage stalls that are open late too.” Eateries include Thai and Indian street food, Spanish and South American tapas, Beijing pork dumplings and gourmet burgers. Some start serving at 5pm, others at 6pm.

Artisan gin bar Gindifferent will open for the evening along with pop-up wine, rum, ale and cocktail bars. Last entry is at 9.30pm. Creepy cocktails and ghostly goings on will be the order of the evening on Saturday October 27 when market-based Gindifferent hosts a Halloween-themed event in a rooftop section of the building where the public isn’t normally allowed. Entry to The Haunted Greenhouse Part 2 is by ticket only. Tickets (£10) are available from Gindifferent Bar or through the Gindifferent Bar Facebook page. Wednesday November 14 and Wednesday December 12 will see the market open late for Christmas shopping, food and drink and live music until 9pm. The first event coincides with the Shrewsbury Christmas Lights Switch-on and the second with the annual Carols in The Square concert. Complimentary mulled wine and mince pies will be served to shoppers (proof of purchase required).

Meet the Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Team

This month, Amanda Harris, customer service advisor Tell us about your role

My team are responsible for dealing with incoming phone and email enquiries which can be very varied, so no day is the same.

What is ‘The Conservatory’?

The Conservatory is quite unique within the Nuffield Health group. It’s a part of our office and gives all patients a space to relax after their consultation and we can talk to them and help with the process of booking their surgery.

What’s the best part of your job?

for booking the patients in face to face and the other for enquiries. However, we just work together and help each other. There is a steady flow of patients and phone calls all day, so the time does pass quickly. One of us will leave at 5pm and the other will then stay on until the clinics have finished which is normally between 7.308pm. We really don’t know what the day will bring and how busy it will be which makes the job challenging and interesting.

Why do you think people come to Nuffield Health for treatment?

I really love meeting the patients face to face, all the different characters. I like that we can meet the patient in the beginning and then follow their pathway and even visit them during their stay at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital. And it’s lovely when they come back for their follow up appointments and thank us. I also like the fact that we can offer surgery to NHS patients that have been waiting a long time. Especially the elderly patients that are waiting for cataract surgery as the surgery will improve their day to day life immensely.

We’re a trusted brand. We can offer fast access to treatment and the patient can choose their consultant and procedure date to suit their individual needs.

What are the most common enquiries you deal with on a day to day basis?

Does Nuffield Health offer finance for treatments?

We get a lot of enquiries asking how a patient can come to Nuffield Health. We advise on the referral process and give as much information as possible. Patients are also very keen on prices as they need to know before they attend clinic all the possible charges. Some of the most common enquiries are for hip/knee replacements and cataracts.

What does a typical work day look like for you

The first job of the day is to check our internal post box for booking forms that may have been left by a consultant in our absence. We check for any enquiries/ answerphone messages that may have come in overnight. We run reports for the consultants to show current bookings, so we can see where we to book patients into theatre. Normally there are two of us in the office as we have two desks/phones. One desk is predominantly used 14 | It’s beautiful

Have you ever been a patient yourself at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital? What was your own experience like? Yes, I had an elbow operation nearly three years ago. It was a lovely experience to see the hospital from a different side.

We work closely with a medical loan company that offers interest free loans over six or 10 months.

What are waiting times like at the moment to see GPs and consultants?

A patient can normally get an appointment within a week as long as they have a referral from their GP. Our private GPs work on a rota basis and we try and have one GP clinic a day.

How many consultants and GPs do you currently have working with you? We have 150 consultants and six GPs.

What are the little extras Nuffield Health offer that really delight patients?

Free parking, free tea and coffee, a three-month aftercare, gym membership for our Bariatric patients and ‘Recovery Plus’, which is a 12-week rehabilitation course for certain specialities.

Weight loss surgery. Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital.

Obviously it is vital to safeguard the interests of the company but both Carl and I are passionate about Shropshire and believe in getting involved in community affairs whenever and wherever we can. “I am also committed to equal opportunities and ensuring jobs are more accessible to women. “Taxi driving is still a male dominated world but there are more female taxi drivers now than ever before.

Cindy Wilday, Go Carz director

A year of success for Go Carz This year will go down as one of the most successful on record for Shropshire’s largest private hire firm, Go Carz.

The company has continued to expand its operation, develop its highly successful Go Exec service, form new partnerships and remain heavily involved in community projects. During the course of this year Go Carz has merged with Comet Cars in Shrewsbury and opened a new office in Oswestry, as well as forming partnerships with Absolute Personnel in Telford and Cryozone Health in Shrewsbury. The firm has also offered up its office near Shrewsbury Railway Station as a rent-free space for a local community project and been instrumental in the regeneration project aimed at reinvigorating Wellington Railway Station. Most recently the company stepped in to sponsor the newly-formed Baschurch under 8s football team.

The firm has also offered up its office near Shrewsbury Railway Station as a rent-free space for a local community project Cindy Wilday, Go Carz director, has been a driving force behind the firm’s success and is passionate about the company playing an important role in the community. “I’ve been with Go Carz for nearly 10 years now, joining my husband who launched the firm with just one taxi more than 20 years ago,” she said. “It’s been an exciting journey and one that has seen us grow beyond all expectation.

“At Go Carz we have men and women who operate out of our call centres and we have a lot of women in management posts. “Taxi driving is a little different because you have to think about the safety aspect of women drivers operating late at night but I do believe this is an area where we will see an increase.” Cindy played an integral role in launching the firm’s Go Exec service which identified a need for ferrying people to and from business meetings and the airport in highend quality vehicles with professional, smart, drivers.

“At Go Carz we have men and women who operate out of our call centres and we have a lot of women in management posts” “That really took off, it is a major part of our business now and is something that continues to grow,” she added. “Another thing we are proud of is the deal we struck with Casino 36 in Wolverhampton where we offered an exclusive service to their customers. “More recently we formed a similar partnership with Absolute Personnel, a recruitment agency, where we take people to and from their place of work after being offered employment. “Our link with Cryozone Health is for the wellbeing of our drivers and other staff. The unique treatments offered by cryotherapy are of particular benefit to our drivers who spend hours in the car. “And earlier in the year we were able to get involved with the renovation at Wellington Station and donated our platform office there as a community hub and the new HQ of The Wrekin News. “All-in-all I would say this has been our most successful year as a company, I am proud of what we have achieved at Go Carz and I am pleased with the way we are able to keep driving the company forward.” It’s beautiful | 17

Sage green One colour that is making a comeback in full force this year is Sage Green and we are very happy about it.

This sophisticated earthy shade of green has many different tones allowing you to pick the one that works best for the space and decor. It can be incorporated into your interior in a lot of ways due to being a fairly neutral shade, meaning there’s no danger of it being too overpowering in your home. We rounded up our best sage green products in all different tones to show you the wide variety of the colour and spark inspiration of how you can use this on trend colour in your own way.

Shropshire Oktoberfest set to    s

aking We are m family a y Sunda nd fun day a d o street fo festival

Shropshire’s biggest beer festival is on course for a record-breaking year – with ticket sales set to top the 10,000 mark. Organisers Shropshire Festivals say the three-day event – based around Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park and in the town itself – has already sparked an unprecedented demand for tickets. Last year’s inaugural event saw more than 10,000 enjoy the combination of beer festival, live music and top-drawer comedy, but Shropshire Festivals boss Beth Heath says this year’s event already looks like being even bigger. “Ticket sales have been unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, and at £10 for entry into the biggest Shropshire beer festival ever we seem to have caught the county’s party spirit in the creation of this event,” she said.

38 | It’s beautiful

This year’s event will see a selection of 200 real ales under one roof, alongside a lager bar, prosecco parlour, gin den and even a rum shack. And to make the most of the autumn harvest, a new cider area will take centre stage at the festival, which runs from October 5-7. The Comedy Club will feature an unbeatable line-up of stars, such as TV favourite Junior Simpson, BBC radio star Keith Carter and Manchester funnyman Chris Brooker. Meanwhile there is a fantastic line-up of music planned for the Rees Astley stage, showcasing both traditional Oompah sounds and the best local stars. Beth said this year’s event would build on the success of 2017, with

smash records the Sunday being earmarked for a particularly familyfriendly day. “Among the things which are new for 2018 is a light show in the huge beer tent with Andy McKeown commissioned to make the space a show in its own right. “We are making Sunday a family fun day and street food festival, so visitors can bring the family for Sunday Lunch while they enjoy a beer and some great music. Making the event family friendly is crucial to us and what better way of doing that than a relaxing Sunday event where the marquees will be filled with free kids’ entertainment?” The event’s location within walking distance of Shrewsbury railway station meant it was ideal for people who did not want to drive but wanted to make the most of the drink and food on offer, she added.

Will rum be ‘the next big thing’? Some drinks industry experts think so

Recipes

Pumpkin and Stilton Bread INGREDIENTS: 10g Fresh yeast 75g Water, tepid 135g Whole meal flour 155g White bread flour 100g Fermentation* 80g Blue cheese (we like Colston Bassett) 40g Pumpkin puree** 70g Grated carrot 3g Salt 15g Pumpkin seeds

FERMENTATION 170g Fruit juice with high sugar content (such as apple, pineapple, pear or grapefruit) 280g White bread flour 15g Fresh yeast PUMPKIN PUREE 100g Cooking pumpkin Olive oil Salt Pepper

*METHOD FOR FERMENTATION Place the fruit juice in a warm place for 3-4 days prior to making the bread. When the fruit juice has fermented, place all the ingredients into a freestanding mixer and, using the dough hook attachment, mix on low speed for 7 minutes until a smooth silky dough has been achieved. Leave the dough in a warm place for 24 hours. After this, the fermentation will be ready to use. **METHOD FOR THE PUMPKIN PURE Peel and cut the pumpkin into small chunks, lightly coat in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place on a tray and roast lightly with no color until soft. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly then place into a jug blender and blend until smooth. METHOD FOR THE BREAD Add the yeast to the water to dissolve. In a freestanding mixer with a dough hook attachment, place the two flours, fermentation, blue cheese, pumpkin puree and grated carrot into the bowl. Pour in the yeast and water and mix on a low speed for 5 minutes. Then add the salt and mix on a medium speed for a further 1 minute. Remove the dough from the mixer bowl and place into a clean bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Leave in a warm place until the dough has risen by two thirds its original size. Heat the oven to 220°c/425°F/gas mark 7. Knock back the dough and shape it into one large loaf, or two small boules. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and sprinkle the pumpkin seeds over the bread. Cover the bread with a damp towel and leave until it has risen by two thirds its original size. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Wine and Spirit Trade Association figures show rum sales topped one billion recently and the Mojito is often cited as a favourite cocktail. Even the Pina Colada is seeing a resurgence - personally, I think the song is better than the drink. I find it hard to imagine that rum could overtake gin (which is still growing), but I’m often wrong. White, dark or spiced, rum certainly has the versatility to suit a wide range of tastes. Anecdotes aren’t evidence, but I’ve heard it said that rum and coke is once again becoming the drink of choice among a growing number of university students. Making rum is arguably more complicated than other spirits. Distilled from cane sugar molasses, it can be difficult to ferment and even harder to clean from your brewing and distilling equipment. And if you are making a darker rum, you have the added complication of cask aging. Rum has a great story. From Admiral Nelsons body being stored in a barrel of rum to preserve it, through to the 1808 Australian Rum Rebellion, where Governor Bligh was overthrown in a military coup because of his attempts to control rum consumption. Not exactly a true story, because although the military were involved in the transportation of rum, the coup was more to do with power in the new colony. But it all adds to the mystique of rum. And that’s without even mentioning pirates!

Recipes

Lemon Tofu Cheesecake www.tofuture.com Ingredients for the Base 1 cup, packed (180g) medjool dates, pitted 1 cup walnuts ½ cup porridge oats 2 tbsps lemon zest 1 pinch cinnamon 1 pinch sea salt 2 tbsps flaxseeds Whizz the base ingredients together, press into a 10” flan case and put into the fridge or freezer to set. If you need it to set in a hurry, the freezer is best. Or you can make mini, individual cheesecakes in 3” tins if you have them. It’s an idea to whizz the walnuts first, before adding the rest of the ingredients, to ensure they are finely ground. Don’t overdo it or you’ll have a paste. Ingredients Filling – lemon layer 300g silken tofu, pressed The zest and juice of 3 lemons 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsps maple syrup 1 tbsp cashew butter 1 pinch sea salt Ingredients Filling – lime layer 300g silken tofu, pressed The zest and juice of 3 limes 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsps maple syrup 1 tbsp cashew butter 2 tsps matcha powder 1 pinch sea salt Add the cornflour to the lemon juice and mix well. Melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan and add the lemon and flour mix. Heat slowly, stirring all the time, you need to bring it gently to the boil in order to 42 | It’s beautiful

cook the flour. When the sauce has started to thicken, about 5 minutes, take off the heat and leave to cool for a few minutes before you add it to your blender with the rest of the filling ingredients. Whizz together and pour over prepared cake base. If you are making a double-layer, 2-green cheesecake which is very tangy and looks pretty impressive, make the lime layer in the same way and pour it over the base first, place it in the fridge for 20 minutes to set and then pour over the lemon layer. Chill for at least ½ hour to set before serving.

Ingredients for the Topping 1 cup (150g) raspberries 2 tsps ground chia seeds 2 tbsps maple syrup ¼ cup water Whizz the topping ingredients together and set aside for the chia to absorb and thicken for at least 10 minutes before using. Either swirl the fruity topping into the cheesecake before it sets if you’re feeling artistic or allow filling to set and smooth over the top. Top with half-moon slices of lemons and limes, a few reserved raspberries and an optional pomegranate seed for a bit of panache.

A new jewel in Shrewsbury’s crown Walking into the spacious store located on the square in Shrewsbury, previously the Co-operative building society, you’d be forgiven for thinking it had always been there. Cabinets bursting with rich displays of antique treasures on one side and on the other the most modern of jewellery. County Goldsmiths is part of the rich tapestry of independent stores that thrive in Shrewsbury. Having recently moved to new premises and incorporated sister company Woodings & Co in the same space, the bright airy store soon reveals more than just an off-the-shelf jewellery range. There’s a design area where brides-to-be can consult with an expert to design the ring they’ve always wanted. A busy workshop is also visible where skilled jewellers are working away creating bespoke designs or re-modelling antique jewellery. The workshop can also do repairs on all jewellery types, including watches - in many cases in under one hour and whilst your waiting or celebrating your new purchase, you can have a glass of fizz at their beautiful champagne bar.

They buy into the beauty and the history of the older pieces and our pricing is from £20 to £30’000 so we can cater to any budget.

knot. There is also a beautiful range of bridal jewellery in silver plated platinum for budgetconscious brides.

Stuart and his team also run another County Goldsmiths store in Ludlow which underwent an extensive refurbishment the middle of last year and now they are able to offer nearly double the stock they had before in the previous shop.

The new store’s prime location is sure to open up this family business to an even wider audience and with some limited space above the store, the enterprising businessman is also planning to create a retail and office units with a community area to rent out to other like-minded businesses. Another element to the business is Stuart has had the old bank vault completely overhauled and is soon to be turned into a safety deposit box for anyone wanting to keep their items locked up safely and fully insured. Stuart explains…When we first saw the vault I knew we couldn’t leave it in the state it was and we set out to find a company that was willing to take on this monumental job as the one door alone weighs an impressive 1.5 tons and getting it’s out of the building would be a tall order. Many banks are no longer keeping peoples possessions in their vaults and in turn insurance companies are making people put large insurance approved safes and alarm systems in homes, we can take the pressure off this and offer a safe, secure and fully insured solution to this matter explains Stuart.

Providing an engagement and wedding ring service for many brides in the county, Stuart explains why his customers keep coming back.

With both stores originally on Butcher Row, Stuart Woodings has grown the business beyond its humble beginnings on a small street in Welshpool. After moving to Shrewsbury seven years ago, Stuart and his team have built an outstanding reputation for customer service and supplying quality antique and modern jewellery.

“We have built a reputation for supplying high-grade jewellery at a fraction of the price compared to other jewellers and our after service is second to none. Not only do we look after the customer and guide them through their purchase we look after the ring for the duration that they own it and this includes free rhodium plating for life on the ring. Most lady’s who come to see us know exactly what they want. I’ve seen the trend shift from the man buying the engagement ring as a surprise. Now it’s much more common to see the lady come in and buy the ring jointly with her partner so that she gets something she really wants. We also have a large selection of quality Pre-owned watches including ROLEX, BREITLING and OMEGA, making it a lot easier for the ladies to get the men through the door!

“We provide jewellery for all generations,” says Stuart, “and we like to offer people something different, we quite often have customers come in quite unsure as to what they are after and we have expert staff on hand to guide them through their purchase to make sure they get exactly what they want.

If a customer is after a ring that they can’t find on the high street we can make it exactly as they want either using traditional jewellery methods or if its complex we can use CAD design, and we love a challenge. The store offers 0% finance on its jewellery and watches to help spread the cost to couples tying the

The new Woodings and County Goldsmiths is a shopping destination for jewellery.

“The future of the business is really bright,” adds Stuart, “we’re looking to collaborate and take part in wedding shows to really push the brand onwards. The business has come so far already, the new store has opened up a new chapter for us and we’re excited to see where it leads.” For any more information please visit www.countygoldsmiths.co.uk and www.woodingsandco.com or call 01743 588751

Varicose vein myth-busting If you stand all day, you’ll get varicose veins Standing all day will not cause varicose veins to appear. However, if you already have them, your symptoms will get worse. Varicose veins are a simple cosmetic problem Incorrect. Varicose veins are a vascular disease. Not only that, they are a progressive vein disease. What does this mean? If you don’t get them treated right away, they will get worse over time. They are a real disease that can cause people who have them a lot of pain.

Revolutionary new treatment for varicose veins Vein Solutions is a Cheshirebased private service specialising in modern techniques for the treatment of varicose and thread veins. It is run by Mr Sameh Dimitri, an experienced consultant vascular surgeon. Vein Solutions offers the latest techniques in treating veins without the need for general anaesthesia. This is in the form of state of the art, innovative VenaSeal glue injections. This exciting, revolutionary treatment, not yet widely available, does not require local anaesthesia or compression stockings. Mr Sameh Dimitr

Vein Solutions also offers a walk in, walk out service using minimally invasive procedures such as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), foam sclerotherapy and radio frequency ablation of veins (VNUS). Vein Solutions also offers treatment of thread veins with the use of microsclerotherapy and Veinwave techniques. Treatment for facial veins, arm veins, breast veins, vaginal/vulval veins and pelvic congestion syndrome is also available. All treatments are undertaken under local anaesthetic (as required) in about one hour. Vein Solutions also provide wrinkle reduction injections and dermal fillers. More details about treatments and a price list are available from Vein Solutions. Call free on 0800 043 1997 or visit www.veinsolutions.co.uk

Running will cause varicose veins This is simply not true. In fact, the opposite is true! It’s always a good thing to exercise, and moving your legs makes your blood start pumping. In turn, your circulation becomes better. Getting your blood flowing actually helps the fight against varicose veins. The only treatment is to remove the vein Incorrect. There are now new, noninvasive treatments that can be done in one day. These include Endovenus Laser Ablation (EVLA) and Ultrasound Guided Therapy (UGS). Both have high success rates. Men cannot get varicose veins While it is more likely that women will develop this condition more than men, it happens to men more often than you would think. About 45% of those diagnosed with the disease are men. Varicose veins can happen to anyone at any time in life, man or woman. In fact, more than 30% of the population are affected by varicose veins. Crossing your legs cause varicose veins This is definitely one of the more popular myths when it comes to varicose veins. But don’t worry- cross your legs all you want. Varicose veins occur when the valves in your legs get weakened and damaged. While your valves normally keep your blood flowing, when something happens to damage your valves, your blood pools up. This is what causes varicose veins to appear, not crossing your legs. It’s beautiful

Shropshire artist encourages others Originally from Richmond, now living in Shropshire, and formerly a dairy farmer, Penelope Timmis has been exhibiting her paintings widely across the UK for over 16 years and in that time become recognised for her individual style that incorporates bold colour, movement and life. Penelope uses dramatic, expressionistic brush strokes in her energetic paintings that depict animals, landscapes and floral scenes and result in an often playful, contemporary look. Penny’s love of art and painting started when she was very young watching her father who was an architect and realised then that she had the same creative colourful mind, from a very young age she always dreamt of what it would be like to sell a piece of her own art. Now many years on, Penny still has the love and drive to sell her bespoke artwork whilst encouraging and helping others who would love to either learn of improve their own creative skills in painting. Penny, who for many years lived at a dairy farm alongside her husband and four children always loved art but with such a busy home life really did not have time to spend on her, then hobby but she always wondered how it would feel to sell a painting that she had beautifully created. Following the death of her late husband Penny continued to work at the dairy farm and with some extra help, she found time for just one day a week to spend time in her little studio painting and it really brought back the feelings and creative ideas that she had missed whilst being a full-time mum and wife. 58 | It’s beautiful

With a new-found confidence, she was free to paint and sell the paintings in a full-time role, this enabling her do the one thing she excelled and flourished at whilst creating that much needed revenue stream for the family. Penelope then decided that she wanted to encourage others to pick up a paintbrush and start enjoying and allowing their own creative colourful minds to work wonders in their own artwork. Penny says: “I love to share my creative ideas and encourage others to believe that they too can paint, there is no right or wrong in painting it’s all about individual expression therefore allowing everyone’s personalities to come to life on their painting.” Penny now lives half a mile outside Westbury in a stunning old converted church which creates the perfect backdrop for any landscape painting, due to its rural views across the Shropshire countryside. She regularly holds art workshops at her beautiful home where people can come and enjoy her wonderful hospitality and home cooked food whilst painting. Due to Penny’s desire to really give that small group concentration and one-to-one time, she keeps her art workshop groups to a maximum of seven people, creating a wonderful warm welcome to each and every workshop and allowing her to give her time to each and every member of that workshop. So, whether you are looking for an alternative hen night, getting together with the girls or just fancy your hand at creating your own painting, a visit to one of Penny’s workshops is a must.

First-class pastoral care Pupils at leading Shropshire prep school, Packwood Haugh, have the best of all worlds. The school is set in beautiful grounds of more than 65 acres, but within easy reach of the network of main roads that enables access to the wider region and beyond. The children enjoy the freedom of all that green space every day during break times, games sessions and, for boarders in particular, after school hours during their free time. Outdoor learning features on the curriculum as much as possible with teachers using the school’s wonderful environment to bring learning to life. As a boarding school, Packwood is able to support busy parents of day children by providing extended care at both ends of the school day. Breakfast and supper are both popular options and many day children choose to take part in the wide variety of evening clubs and activities before staying for the night too. Boarding remains as popular as ever with first-class pastoral care, support and stability provided by a dedicated and professional team. The new academic year begins with new house parents, Roy and Cristina Chambers, taking over boys’ boarding. In common with the girls’ house parents, James and Beth Mullock, they are

Roy, one of Packwood’s deputy heads, is looking forward to another successful year in Packwood’s long history, “Pupils enjoy a full and broad curriculum ranging from rigorous and engaging academic lessons to sport, extra-curricular activities and trips with a full complement of music, art and drama as well. Packwood’s ethos is to educate the whole child, to develop character and resourcefulness that will enable the children to meet the challenges that lie beyond prep school.”

Hair by Royston Blythe

Transition into the autumn season with incredible new hues As we kiss goodbye to long summer nights and our laissez-faire approach to life, it’s time to embrace the crisp autumn season and celebrate beautiful, rich colours. We’re colour-obsessed at Royston Blythe and adore this time of year in the salon! It’s the perfect excuse to upgrade your hair colour and reinvent your style. The change into the autumn season means making your hair warmer, richer or even cooler and creating hues that will work to enhance a fairer complexion and compliment your new wardrobe. We are also keen to remove any unwanted tones that were caused by the sun. The benefits of a great hair colour are countless: not only does upgrading your colour inject energy into your style, it refreshes your skin tone, it’s youthifying, it enhances your features and, in many cases, transforms the way you feel about yourself every time you look into the mirror. At Royston Blythe, we believe that every colour should be completely tailored and personalised to the individual: there is no age barrier when it comes to incredible hair colour. We are dedicated to ensuring that each and every salon guest leaves us with the colour of their dreams that is healthy and full of vitality! Our team of colour specialists recommend that you consider these simple steps to achieve the perfect hues this autumn and beyond. 1/. RESPECT Always consider the expert advice and knowledge of a professional. Our colour experts have been trained to the very highest level and can offer advice on finding the perfect tones to make sure you look the very best version of yourself. Whether the colour of your dreams has just hit the headlines on an A-list celebrity of the moment or you’re having a ‘hair-envy’ moment from one of the yummy mummies on the school run, it is critical to be guided by what suits your own individual features and of course is achievable with the condition of your hair. The best hair colour is the one that looks good on you. 2/. EVOLVE Be prepared to evolve. The tones that suited you 20 years ago are likely to be very different to those that will suit your more mature self. You need to work with your colourist to create hues that respect the loss of skin

and hair pigment that naturally happens over time. As you mature, avoiding global colour (full head colour) and less natural looking hues is important and, in most instances, going lighter is far more flattering. Highlights and balayage techniques embrace a variety of tones and will make incoming grey hairs far less obvious. 3/. PROTECT Coloured hair must be treated with respect and integrity to keep it looking fabulous in between salon visits. Investing in specific products to keep your hair well-nourished and preserve those hues is a must and following a home care ritual that has been recommended by your colourist is strongly advised. If you are a blondie who loves cool platinum tones, a silver shampoo is going to be your hero-product whilst those women who love more vibrant colours should consider the Kérastase Réflection range as their go-to products. 4/. TREAT After any colour service, you should accept the offer of a post colour in-salon hair treatment. At Royston Blythe, we always recommend a post-colour Kerastase Fusio Dose treatment to help lock in your colour whilst enhancing and replenishing its condition. Fusio Dose combine a concentré with a booster to personalise the treatment to your unique hair needs. Based on your needs, your hairstylist will create a customised mix from 20 possible combinations to instantly transform your hair. Your main concern is tackled by the concentré while your secondary concern is tackled by the booster. When away from the salon you should commit to a weekly treatment routine – remembering that for a beautiful colour to remain glossy and shiny, requires healthy and well-maintained tresses. Autumn sunrise Autumn is definitely my favourite season; the colours on the trees are turning, that breeze is ebbing in but we still have the odd sunny day. Lets move in to the season with a softer approach because the catwalks gave us some amazing shapes to work from. Flowing robes with belts and soft blanket scarves are a welcome sight. Perfectly accessorized with some lively jewellery and footwear, this will give those autumnal tones some life. I think it’s time for a few new pieces for the wardrobe…don’t you?

Business award

Top industry award helps fly the flag for Newport’s independent retailers The owners of a Newport card and gift shop are flying the flag for the town’s independent retailers after scooping a top industry award. Lisa Leadbeater and Nick Savchenko, owners of the Little Card and Gift Company on High Street, have been named the region’s Best Independent Greeting Card Retailer. The business duo, who have been trading in the town for five years, fought off competition from independent retailers across the Midlands and Wales area to scoop the prestigious accolade at the 2018 Reta Awards. Lisa was handed the award earlier this month at a ceremony held at London’s Dorchester Hotel, which was attended by more than 400 delegates from across the UK. She said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition for all our continued hard work and commitment. We never expected to win – it came as a complete and utter shock to us both. We feel extremely humbled and would like to thank all our customers for their loyalty and support over the years.” The Little Card and Gift Company is one of a number of independent retailers to feature on Newport’s thriving High Street and Nick believes the award goes a long way to highlighting the important role of small independents to the local economy. He said: “Newport is a thriving high street but unfortunately the same can’t be said for all towns. You see on the news everyday reports of businesses struggling to remain viable. “We are very lucky here in Newport to have a fantastic mix of small independents selling a range of high quality goods. We have no empty shops and we believe people living in and around the town have very much adopted a ‘shop local’ attitude which is tremendous news for small business owners like ourselves. “We are now looking for a suitable spot in the shop to display the award for all our customers to see.” Nick and Lisa pride themselves on offering top quality service, going the extra mile whenever they can to help customers.

“We have no empty shops and we believe people living in and around the town have very much adopted a ‘shop local’ attitude” They are often joined in the shop by Ted, Lisa’s daughter’s pet dog, and even he is pleased to be an award winner. “Ted can be found curled up behind the desk most days we’re in the shop. If I’m at work, so is he. He’s very friendly and has become very popular with customers and we view him as part of our team.” The Reta Awards were launched in 2005 by Progressive Greetings Worldwide magazine. As well as recognising small independent greeting card retailers, the awards also acknowledge excellence demonstrated by national card retailers, garden centres, department stores, mini chains, national multiples and supermarkets. All the winners in all the retail categories were arrived at as a result of a huge nationwide nomination process with UK greeting card publishers nominating retailers they felt to be worthy winners in each category. The Little Card and Gift Company beat off competition from other retailers in Wales and the Midlands region to win the award. As well as stocking a range of greeting cards, the shop also stocks small gifts for all occasions, balloons, a range of candles and other items. It’s location in the heart of Newport’s busy High Street makes it the town’s go-to card shop for many people. It’s surrounded by a number of other specialist retailers including an art gallery and stores stocking a range of homewares and gifts. For more information follow the Little Card and Gift Company on Facebook @thelittlecardandgiftcompany or contact Lisa and Nick 01952 812091. It’s beautiful | 79

relationships etc. And then cancer is thrown in the mix. I work to support the patients, but also their families and loved ones, because they find it hard to deal with too.” Every year approximately 220 young people are diagnosed with cancer in the West Midlands region. The specialist nursing post is the first for the region and will offer specialist care to wherever young people with cancer are being treated, whether that’s in their local hospitals, at home or elsewhere. Jessica Greenwood, lead cancer nurse at SaTH, said: “This role has been an aspiration of SaTH’s for many years and to finally have Becky in the post is a fantastic asset to our service, and will greatly benefit the young patients that we serve.” Teenage Cancer Trust specialist nurses work alongside existing cancer services to champion the age appropriate care of young people, educating and supporting other health care professionals to provide the best possible age appropriate care. They offer one to one support for young people and their families wherever the young person is treated and work with the patient’s local clinical team to identify and address specific age appropriate needs. They understand the challenges young people with cancer face and specialise in individual support from the point of diagnosis throughout treatment.

Becky helping to support more young cancer patients in Shropshire Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity dedicated to ensuring no young person faces cancer alone, in partnership with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), has funded a new Teenage and Young Adult clinical specialist nurse to support young people with cancer aged 13 to 24, who live across the Shropshire region. Becky Salisbury has been appointed to the specialist post and will be working across both the Princess Royal Hospital Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, as well as linking in with the Teenage and Young Adult team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, the principal treatment centre for the region. Becky Salisbury said: “I am really excited to be appointed to the role of Teenage Cancer Trust clinical nurse specialist. It is so important to have specialist care just for the teenagers and young adults at a local level. They are at a difficult time in their lives when they’re just finding out who they are, becoming independent and juggling so many choices around school, college, work, 80 | It’s beautiful

Becky says: “It is so important to have specialist care just for the teenagers and young adults at a local level. They are at a difficult time in their lives when they’re just finding out who they are, becoming independent and juggling so many choices around school, college, work, relationships etc. And then suddenly they have to deal with having cancer as well. “Young people can feel isolated and lonely and having someone who understands what is happening and who can support them through this experience makes a huge difference. Providing information on the type of cancer they have, why their hair is falling out during chemotherapy, why they are losing weight, helps keep the young person engaged in what they are going through.” Becky has been a nurse since 1999 training in Manchester. She specialised in paediatric cancer care, before becoming a community children’s nurse and, for 10 years working with children and young people, covering an age range spanning infants to 19 year old teenagers. Becky has been in the Teenage Cancer Trust post since last year and says the role is pivotal to making a young person’s experience of having cancer a little less stressful. Becky explains: “Providing cancer care in the community setting or in their local hospital, means that a young people can carry on going to school or work, continue to keep in touch with their friends, be supported by family, all of which are things that allow them to live a normal life as possible while they are undergoing treatment for cancer.”

LAST WORD

Keeping your cool when they go back to school Whoever it was that invented school and made it compulsory – I’d like to thank them. After nine long weeks juggling childcare with work, getting used to the noise and the company, suddenly it’s time to get back to the old routine. It was only last week I had to drag them along with me to a doctor’s appointment and physically restrain them from having a wrestling match in the consultation room. The week before that I decided to take an important work call in the bathroom at home where I wouldn’t be disturbed. I forgot to lock the door and within minutes Florence (4) bounced in to use the toilet before I could stop her. Trying to go about your normal life with two young children in tow is like running on sand; challenging, uncomfortable, messy, but in the end, it can only make you stronger.

Don’t fret, to keep your cool now they’re back in school, I’ve got a few ideas to maximise your quality time together while ensuring you still get stuff done.

The school runs As working mums will know, making school drop-offs and pick-ups every day isn’t always possible. Try to do at least one each day, either the drop-off to settle them in to school or the pick-up and see how pleased they are to see you.

Mealtimes Try to have at least one meal with your kids every day, a bowl of cereal together before school or work or an evening meal around the table. It’s a chance to spend some quality time together while fuelling up and asking them about their day.

Read together

Multi-tasking skills are heightened for the duration of the holidays and we mums become like supreme leaders, able to command an army of small people, negotiate business deals and keep the household running like clockwork.

Doing homework together or reading a bed time story is a great opportunity to cuddle up and really engage. I find it’s at this time that they might open up to me about what’s happened in school that day, good and bad.

Now they’re back at school, like many busy mum’s, I’m regretting that I didn’t take enough time to enjoy them over the summer holidays. We’re always so preoccupied with our jobs, housework and life admin that even taking just an hour off to enjoy their company can seem impossible.

Schedule activities

| It’s beautiful

Rather than assume you’ll come up with a great activity to do at the weekend, book something and write it in your planner. Once you’re committed to doing it, you’ll do it. It’s these days out and experiences that help create memories of your time together.

Do the housework

Housework is a necessary evil, so you might as well try and get some help from your little ones. They may seem like a chore to you, but pairing socks, cooking dinner and cleaning the house can all be made a fun activity to a four-year-old, where they also learn useful skills.

Put the phone down

It’s easy to get stuck in an Instagram scroll hole, only glancing up at the kids occasionally. If you’re making a conscious effort to spend quality time together, leave the phone in a different room to avoid getting distracted.

Work later

If you can, save your admin and housework until after the kids are in bed. You can give them your full attention at bed time and then get stuff done more efficiently without the distractions.

Treat yourself

I’ve saved the best until last to make sure it stays freshest in your memory. To be energised and enthusiastic about spending time together, you also need to take time for yourself. Go out somewhere alone, read a book, watch some Netflix, do whatever you need to do to refresh and recharge after the summer holidays. It won’t be long until October half term and you can start the whole process again.
