BACKGROUND:
The Penn Alternative Breaks community engages in meaningful social justice work by prioritizing the voices and needs of those impacted by injustices, cultivating sustainable community partnerships, and facilitating collaborative learning. We provide students with the tools to explore their identity and how it affects their position in the communities we work with and in society as a whole. By integrating education, reflection, and direct service, we hope to foster an ongoing commitment to social change.

This year's VIRTUAL Alternative Winter Break Trip is an awesome way to connect with other PABies (aka fellow participants and your Site Leaders), community partners and folks at Civic House safely over winter break, and to process all that's happening in the world right now using education, service, and reflection (the three pillars of PAB!)
VIRTUAL PHILLY ALTERNATIVE WINTER BREAK TRIP 2021

Trip Fee: $25* (Fee Waivers Available - See Financial Aid section in App!)
*All trip fees will go directly to community partners we are working with throughout the week.
Want to learn more about Philly from a social justice perspective?
This year’s Alternative Winter Break (AWB) focuses broadly on social justice in Philadelphia. Through conversations with community partners, community engagement experiences, and group reflection, participants will learn more about existing social justice organizations and efforts in the city of Philadelphia.
For this year's AWB trip, we will be volunteer debate judges for the Philadelphia Scholastic Debate League with After School Activities Partnerships (
phillyasap.org) - an education non-profit that coordinates chess, debate, drama, and Scrabble after school programs across the city.We will engage in a conversation about affordable housing, building partnerships, and using a model of non-hierarchical leadership with the non-profit Bike & Build (
bikeandbuild.org). Participants will also participate in Beyond the Bell (
beyondthebelltours.com) virtual "Badass Women’s History Tour of Philadelphia."
The PABoard is in the midst of confirming more exciting and collaborative activities with additional community partners! So... STAY TUNED!

Responsibilities and Required Activities:
- Participate in all activities during PAB AWB Jan 4-7! :)
- 2 pre-trip bonding and education events (one is currently scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, Dec 1!)
- 1 post-trip reflection/bonding with your PAB group
- Promoting and selling tickets for our Quizzo fundraiser (Spring semester)
- (optional, but highly recommended) Digital Dine & Discuss - Civic House is hosting regular conversations with student groups and faculty around a specific social justice issue.
**Your application will be blinded for reading and deliberations, so regardless of whether you have participated in or applied for a trip before, please take the time to write a thoughtful application.
