Every so often someone would bring food - good food, not prisoner food. Two years, and his only regular visitor was a small child who came up to share drinks with him and talk - and one day, a giant kea flew down out of the sky and grabbed the kid. Now that I'm caught up with the thread I just wanted to say, while we're all breathless with anticipation of Rawkking's finale, that the thread has been fabulous thus far. Bronzestabbed got me playing DF again and now I'm the happy owner of a so-far fun-free fortress that's four years young. 4th Opal, 239 Cage traps in the caverns have captured a male and female draltha, underground grazing creatures similar to our yaks from the surface. Another source of milk and meat for the fortress. More thieves have shown up since the siege ended. This one escapes before Saoritficis can bring her bronze battle axe upon the intruder. This mole is a wily one, but he could not evade both cage traps. 9th Opal Well, this is a surprising development. It seems The Rare Ship is aware we endured the siege. Rothon and Arrhythmia Rothon is the child of Loden Taylor and Pladdicus of The Walled Skies. She originates from Mirrorgorged and moved to Paddlestab upon marriage with Arrhythmia. Ramcorz She is an orphan without family who hails from Paintfamous. Serelon and aldantefax The parents of Ton Ton, two accomplished medical dwarves. Serelon hails from Rackbold, while aldantefax was birthed in Bookteacher before joining his wife. apseudonym, Ikubi Akius, and Johnathan They made the journey to Bronzestabbed from Amberhelms. apseudonym originally hailed from Watchaxe. Ikubi also hunted great beasts like I once did. She managed to survive an encounter with a creature of the evil known as Vucar Necrodust the Fatal Ghost. AmishSpecialForces Making the journey from Ropenotch, she arrives without any of her family. Geekake An excellent animal trainer from Friendlyshoots. She makes the journey without her husband. All migrants are assigned rooms in the common dorms, with the natural exception of Serelon and aldantefax. They are given a room to share in the Star Guarded Memorial complex. 11th Opal Delving below the lower caverns we come across tetrahedrite. We already have plenty of copper but the silver inside makes the ore worth mining, so we do. 14th Opal I assign our most skilled engravers to improve the dorm rooms once more. 15th Opal More harpies are spotted approaching the fortress from The Fields of Vice Meanwhile we begin to slaughter some of our surplus male livestock. 17th Opal One harpy is buried under a barrage of copper projectiles. Grizzwold is starting to show the quirks of veterancy. The harpy comes crashing down. As The Rainy Boots advance to finish off the helpless creature, The Walled Skies rush south to the aid of Tiler Kiwi. Though she has the very well-made wooden shield and training sword of HONK HONK HONK's craftdwarfship, this is not a tale of the start of a hero's journey. I urge her to keep her distance until help arrives. She runs across the southern hills alongside the walls erected. When she turns north to make a break for the fortress proper, lunnrais appears from the north. She raises her crossbow... ...and ends it with a single bolt. 22nd Opal Threats from the Fields of Vice continue to surface. A lone ogre is spotted north of the river. It does not seem worth it to make the journey across the river to engage it immediately. The murk could emerge at any time. Geekkake's experience with animals it to be commended. With a single serving of food he is able to pacify the beasts enough to be let out of their cages and graze with relative safety. 23rd Opal Dirt turns one today. Spikey and PoptartsNinja walk with him to pick out some of our clothiers' work more suited for a young man of his age. 24th Opal Centurium is born today, another life entering the fortress. On the same day I intentionally trigger a cavern collapse to hasten the sculpting of the auditorium. In spite of the height the dust manages to kick up to Leperfish's level and leave him unconscious and bruised once more, though thankfully no serious harm is done. 5th Obsidian A giant rat runs up the ramps into the fortress proper, and the military is summoned to deal with the threat. Their help ends up being unneeded as another animal is added to the Bronzestabbed menagerie. 11th Obsidian Another dangerous creature is spotted in the depths. 13th Obsidian The Rainy Boots and GNU Order have been dispatched to deal with the reacher. Macha was all ready to fight it but apparently my dear husband can handle a crossbow even better than ever! It attempts to flee but doesn't make much distance. On the way back a tribe of rodent men is discovered. Once again, wood cannot trump bronze. 17th Obsidian A blind cave ogre is discovered in the caverns, The Walled Skies being dispatched to aid GNU Order and The Rainy Boots. But FinalSin is already in the caverns, without ammo. He wanders to the meeting point and stumbles into combat with the monster. He dodges the creature's clumsy strikes and counters with bashes from his copper shield, but there isn't much time... Ton Ton is caught alone by two rat creatures. She handles herself more than admirably, but FinalSin cannot evade the creature forever. Ton Ton sheathes her sword and rushes to the rally point... But nobody arrives in time. The beast attempts to slay a pet bird next. But the militia are able to save this life, taking the opportunity to engage the ogre... And it is slain with little difficulty. ...I was too impatient to gather the dwarves somewhere away from the creature. In honor of the fallen, the full logs showing just how long FinalSin managed to hold off against the blind cave ogre. 26th Obsidian. I allow the dwarves to break out the brush titan meat roasts prepared and preserved so long ago. After all everyone has been through this year a fine New Year's meal is in order. Jbz joins the ranks of craftsdwarves of legend that reside in Bronzestabbed. The fortress itself has grown enough to be considered a metropolis. 1st Granite, midnight, 240 I take a walk around the fortress. The farming area has been expanded with more fungus pastures. The tower is all but complete. A roof could be added to protect against the likes of Kovest. The first ballista battery of Bronzestabbed. An unnamed barracks of fine limestone, still unsmoothed. The auditorium, as it stands. Crude but still functional. No instruments. Looking through any of the grates one can see...and breathe...the caverns below. I file the dossiers of Bronzestabbed's military personnel by squadron. There have been a few changes since I last did this paperwork. GNU Order The Lovely Treaties The Nets of Charm The One-Way Outs The Rainy Boots The Walled Skies And with that, my responsibilities as an overseer have come to an end. Yet there is still one more thing I shall do...

I approach my own tomb quietly, the tablets in my hand. Looking around to ensure no one followed me, I pry open the lid of my coffin. All clear. I move to place them inside where, Titthal willing, no one will find them, no one will discover this until after my death, whatever that may be. I stop, and look over everything one last time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1st Granite, 240 A new decade marks the end of my term as an overseer. How many years has it been since this was written? It was a rough journey, but as a new spring dawns upon The Noble Work I think people have regained some measure of hope for the future in spite of how Kovest and The Vice of Breaches attempted to bring this chapter of our settlement's history to an abrupt end. We have grown more optimistic with our good standards of life, many dwarves have joined the halls of legends in their craft, we have opened the caverns and slain monsters from the depths and Fields of Vice alike to keep our lands safe to roam and toil in hard, noble labor. Why, maybe we can slay the "Evil", whatever it is, and then slaughter perfectly innocent goblins in our home halls! The irony of a "traitor" such as I taking us to where we are is not lost on me. I have worried about the impact on The Rare Ship that leading this fortress may leave many times, though I feel somewhat resolved on my ultimate choice. For I do come from Ripewhips, and something is wrong there. People, mostly dwarves but also goblins and humans have indeed been turning up dead for the past several years. Many dwarves have, behind closed doors, accused the goblins, but from my contact with Limul Vutokkokeb and Unib Linemfikod in the Order of Twilight... I have gotten to know them and other goblins enough to know that this is absolutely not a goblin plot. What reason would they have to throw away their comfortable lives and slaughter needlessly? Most of the victims are still found with their belongings, so you can't even allow for greed. It is something you cannot know until you have been exposed to them since childhood but goblins are not evil by nature: their environments and societies must make them that way. I acknowledge that as I write this I am young compared to so many in these halls but for Titthal's sake, most of you have only encountered goblins on the battlefield if at all! Leperfish is right about this: there is evil out there, and it seems to be encircling The Rare Ship. When I lived in Ripewhips I encountered evil lurking The Humorous Plains. Others may have retreated into their mountain hall permanently after such encounters, but I took to monster hunting with reckless enthusiasm. I encountered Sath one more time but once again was forced to withdraw. And yet I continued, doubling my search efforts as the murders occurred more and more often. I next came across a lycanthropic human taking the form of a loris-like monster, an animal similar to a lemur. I failed to defeat this one as well and could not locate it again in spite of years of searching. Several years came to pass with no luck on tracking those two beasts when Maekrix Waere came with the proposal to travel to Bronzestabbed. Apparently my tales of adventure had caught the interests of this mysterious "Sankis". I was interested of possible leads against what plagued Ripewhips. And then the rest is history. Though there is another worry in my mind... Titthal teaches to give rumors fair consideration so even if I am not convinced it is such...the queen, while old, is rather young to the throne, having taken the throne a mere 15 years ago. With all this secrecy, this wretched land we have elected to border excusing the military emphasis... what if this is some kind of plot beyond just fighting evil? What if we should become no different than The Gem of Testing, ruled under the iron fist of a tyrannical empress? Please tell me this is not the case...though if she is as against goblin citizens as most here are, I may in a way already have my answer. Whatever your reaction to these ramblings, I beg you to leave my husband out of this. I have not even told him of these thoughts, though he is perceptive and may suspect something. Ultimately he just wanted to live a more Traditional life here and I pretended to agree. And that's all I feel I need to say. Take of it what you will. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finished with my review, I hide the treasonous tablets inside the tomb, away from prying eyes. With some effort I drag the fine diorite coffin lid on top once more and snap it into place. Perhaps Bronzestabbed will become more like all mountain halls of the Rare Ship should be, while retaining its noble quest. I was rather underhanded with Leperfish, intentionally giving a lax but notable punishment to try and undermine his authority with discontentment. A few others of my religion currently inhabit the halls, and more will come who have interacted with goblins. Goblin captives may be taken. I can hope. But now I lead a squadron against real threats to The Rare Ship. Here it seems death is only a question of when and how, but still I will prepare. Today I shall teach my soldiers some of the tricks I learned from Sath. I do wonder: after I have returned to dust, what will become of The Rare Ship? - Rawkking fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Aug 27, 2012 |

I know you had to deal with some significant difficulties, and you worked hard to try to keep up with a demanding schedule and a lot of events that needed careful documentation. And with that, it's once again time for a Call for Overseers! As before, please Sign up if and only if you are prepared to take the save and immediately start producing high-quality, carefully-written and well-thought-out content for the enjoyment of the DF LP audience. You need to be familiar with running a mature Dwarf Fortress, and ideally should have some experience with taking screenshots, writing narrative and dialog, and so on. You'll be expected to post updates once every 48 hours (or more frequently), although occasional 72-hour waits are OK as long as they're not habitual. If you know you're going to have obligations for your free time during the next two or three weeks, you should not sign up. In about 24 hours, I'll select a random goon from among those who applied, and by then I should have the save up for download. It is not necessary for you to have a live dwarf in the fortress right now, in order to apply. If you are undwarfed, or a dead dwarf, we'll find a creative way of dealing with that. You can view the signup form's contents here. Good luck!

Diary of Yeol Bellsfissures, 1st Granite, 240 A macedwarf! They've made me a macedwarf! Do they not realize the caliber of the medical talent they are wasting? Sending a surgeon of my skills on the battlefield to fight is just about the worst possible course of action which could have been taken! Not only am I not using my valuable skills, but I am risking death at the very moment I would be the most needed! It is complete and utter madness! Yes, I have used a mace for the purpose of fighting for a few years when I was wandering the wilds, but I'm not exactly a professional. That's not my job! The training is the worst, too, not only has this "New Year's Meal" been the first opportunity I've had to write in my diary in months, but I keep getting told I am "competent", that I was born for this! Well thank you for thinking the most I can aspire to in this world is beating things up indiscriminately all day. I swear they're doing this on purpose. Of course I won't say anything. No use in giving them the satisfaction of thinking they're getting to me. Through all of this my dear wife has been supportive. She says she doesn't believe the stories she heard about the "mace incident". It wasn't an incident, it was medicine! But she wouldn't understand, and so I won't correct her. She has been good to me. Still, I can't let this go on. I need to find a way into a position which is more in line with my skills. Somehow.
