Here comes the new Overseer, yelling to the train of dwarves following him, who furiously scribble notes as he rants and raves, waving at various key points of the fortress. It sounds like he has big changes planned, and while I'm unsure of his temperament I can agree that the security here is sertinlee (I muſt improve my spellling, lest my instructions to the other cheesemakers become muddled) not going to keep The Cheese safe from invaders.

I just hope he doesn't disturb the cheeses while they are in the busy and delicate stage I like to call Slurrying. I won't accept any cheese that doesn't slosh when shaken!

Now you have the chance to protect the cheese yourself!

I told Zapdos that 800-wide is preferred, but 1024-wide is acceptable as a max. This is in line with image rules for the forums in general. Is it really a big problem to have an image that wide? I realize some people browse the forums on little tablets or smart phones or whatever, but that shouldn't be the norm, I'd think?

And yeah, looks like Idles had a shield but no weapon, and managed to kill a troll anyway which is pretty impressive really.

My daughter Male Man is the mightiest warrior of the fortress! While other dwarfs praised for bravery die at the wooden spearpoints of skulking serpents, my dearest daughter, laying naked in my arms, suckling from my bared breast, revels in the proudest tradition of dwarvenkind: martial combat. She is my screaming warhammer with which I fought the cave troll! We struck together around the curve of my meager shield, defeating the beast.

Her great strength and fortitude far surpass my own, and I would be doomed without her. She does not even whimper, despite her many injuries, and only stares angrily and kicks at prodding doctors who would surely temper her fury.

They shall not have her. She is sure to forge a new tradition of women warriors, who shall save this fortress while the men cower and shake. This change will come hard for the others I'm sure, but if I can bear it so can they.

I hope that when she enters womanhood, she will remember me as the steadfast warrior who taught her in combat, not as her poor ugly mother.

So here I am, waiting to fillet a fish when I get approached by someone dressed in armor and carrying a crossbow. I've met pretty much everyone in the fortress by this point, and I think I remember this guy being called Internet Kraken?

He informed me that the new overseer (why is there a new one? What happened to the insane old one? She seemed nice enough if a bit loud) had decided that I would make a perfect recruit for his squad, the One-Way Outs. That sounded a bit ominous to me, and I asked if he was crazy. When I was assured that the overseer was correct, I didn't grumble at all!

Sure, the militia is practically a death sentence, but Mr. Kraken assured me that his squad was for crossbow users only. That doesn't sound so bad! Maybe I can get a crossbow made of native gold, or one that's light blue in color. I hope so!

Added later

I talked with DrMelon at dinner about the news and he told me that he also had something to share! It turns out that we're both serving in the same squad! Isn't that great? I'm gonna tell Nekomata tonight. I hope she's as excited as I am! It seems that the more I think on being in the fortress guard, the more I like the idea.

25th Limestone, 238

The dinner table tonight was swarming with gossip. Remember a week ago when Zaodai was sobbing about the death of his family? Well it seems that he thought that Asehujiko was to blame! Killed him in his sleep, he did. I'm glad that Zaodai was taken into custody. I feel a lot safer with a known murderer behind bars. I tell you, if I'd been the one to find him... the entry trails off here.

There's a skill for beating people over the head with random nearby objects: Misc Object User. Unfortunately, it's difficult (impossible?) to train or force dwarves to use. Unarmed fighters (ie Wrestlers) do indeed grab random nearby stuff to use, though. That's why you'll often see things like the minotaurBad Cow attacking with clothes; they grab the clothes off what they're fighting and start attacking with those instead of attacking barehanded.

I manually convicted you as I had established before that it was known you beat him up. I honestly don't know how Asehujiko's body went unnoticed for so long. There were at least ten dwarves in view of the room at the time of the murder.

Well, to be fair, if it was the 1% it wouldn't be such a big deal that nobles do nothing, and you could probably even tolerate their mandates, since even a full-force 200-dwarf fortress would have 2 nobles.
It's the fact they're often closer to 25% or higher that's a problem...
