In my case, I just poorly stole a migrant during one of the waves and just didn't mention it. I say "poorly" because I grabbed the wrong gender (female), and when I noticed, I stole a male dwarf, but not after (unbeknownst to me) having a child by a father who was married to someone else with whom that dwarf also had children and it was all very Dwarves of Our Lives by the time I stopped screwing things up.

Statues and gold floors and a phallic tower above it reaching into the heavens topped with a few beds for my new friends and I to relax and "enjoy the view." All in...um, you know...memory of my dearly departed wife. I think I just revealed that I thought way too much about my plans for in-game dwarven seduction. Why does no one ever build proper defenses? Where is the gatehouse? Where are the floodgate airlocks? Where are the crenelated towers? Where are the lovely killing hallways? Where are the block-houses and underground passageways and locked hatches and iron grates and ballistas that never work right? Are we playing Dwarf Municipality?

And we must expect that some overseers are more military-oriented than others. Our current overseer seems to be focused on at least a few things that are equally necessary for survival, if not obviously so - a clean indoor water supply, sufficient armor and weaponry for the troops, allowing our best combatants to heal and recover (not pictured, but it's happening), and more. Perhaps it's not as visually spectacular, but if we can't get more clothes made or bought, the fortress is just as assuredly doomed, because naked dwarves will go insane and kill each other en masse. However if you get a turn you can feel free to encrust the hillside with as many dwarvenly crenelations and ballista emplacements and minecart launchers as you see fit.

Seriously, I would take a turn but I have virtually no chance of getting in in the next few weeks, after which I will have no free time. Also, I have no idea how DF 2012 works, so you would all see me ordering massive construction projects to turn Bronzestabbed into a miniature Angband while the actual community falls into decay. And probably only the inner gatehouse would ever get finished. The way I used to play Dwarf Fortress was mostly dealing with the Dwarf part just enough to get to the Fortress part, I admit. In fact, the Fortress killed all the Dwarfs in more than one instance. Although now that caverns have been implemented I'm sure the Goblin Flusher's drainage issues could be worked out... 1st Opal, 238 Merchants report minotaur attacking animals stuck outside. (OOC: ) It does not sound pleasant. I have allowed the front door to be opened for any animals seeking refuge but I doubt many will come. Some goblins started moving again when the animals were scattered. Some did not. 3rd Opal, 238 Nobody has seen Zaodai in a week? How could this be? Was his cage checked? If one of the militia's best soldiers was starved to death there will be hell to pay. Dwarves were already grumbling about his incarceration. 4th Opal, 238 One of the caravan soldiers has engaged Bulifo. It doesn't seem to be going well for him. Why haven't the rest of the merchants joined in? Swore I saw Fiddler Three carrying Zaodai's corpse today. Couldn't have been, otherwise I would have been informed of his death, right? 5th Opal, 238 Well poo poo. Apparently it was. Fiddler Three finally realized what she was carrying and screamed in horror. Not very happy today. In happier news, although the macedwarf who faced the minotaur was killed gruesomely the rest of his companions finally helped out. Bulifo is dead. Now if the goblins would only make up their drat mind and either leave or attack the fortress proper. Giant toad is still seen by merchants, but goblin leader is no longer riding it. Hopefully he drowned. (OOC: thats just greeaaaat) Black Griffon has started gathering ingredients. I have designated a tomb for Zaodai. I will have it smoothed and engraved. 6th Opal, 238 My son begins his work in a frenzied way. 7th Opal, 238 Goblins finally killed mule. Have not started pursuing other animals left outside. Perhaps because the merchants are between them? Vaga42Bond has asked to be taught mechanics. We have enough weavers and as there are no fish to be caught at the moment 8th Opal, 238 Merchant meatshield left today. I doubt they will pass through goblins. We are alone again. 11th Opal, 238 Black Griffon's work, 'Naragseth", is completed. I'm rather impressed. Nettle Soup estimates it to be worth 13,200. Satisfied with his creation, he shambles back to bed a legend. 13th Opal, 238 Reservoir finally ready. Vim Fuego has volunteered to remove the last bit of dirt. This had better work. 15th Opal, 238 Vim Fuego (and his dog) have successfully breached water supply. 16th Opal, 238 Have forgotten it is winter. Water supply is frozen. Will have to wait for results. Construction of barracks ongoing. Walls designated as well as block flooring for the entryway. It is fitting for a dwarf fortress to welcome visiters through stone. 17th Opal, 238 I order manufacturing of charcoal now that we have a supply of wood logs from the cavern. 18th Opal, 238 Dining hall is complete. Engravings will be added later. 19th Opal, 238 I start work on the bedrooms. Soon dwarves will have privacy they deserve. 23rd Opal, 238 Spikey gave birth while sleeping today. Not something I wanted to see. Welcome to the fortress, Dirt. 24th Opal, 238 Improbable Lobster turned one today, and is now ready to wander the fortress on his own. 26th Opal, 238 Unforunate meatshield Male Man has also become a child. Hopefully this will stop Idles from bringing her into battle. In other news, the river is unfrozen. Filling of reservoir possibly weeks or months away. Approximately 25% of bedrooms have front walls and doors. Rest will be taken care of. 28th Opal, 238 Acallapani has turned one. End of month. Hopefully goblins will tire soon and leave.

You can't carve built walls. Carved fortifications can only come from natural stone. If you want to place fortifications where there is no natural wall, you must build them as fortifications. Additionally, carved fortifications extend from floor to ceiling, whereas constructed ones only go halfway up, and as such provide no floor above to build on.
