Please use the links in my previous post to access and download the save. Also please contact me immediately (before you start recording your turn) so we can chat about things. I'm available via PMs or gmail (Leperflesh at gee mail dot com) and we can chat using google chat. I'm going to bed now but we can probably chat some time tomorrow, hopefully. I'm totally serious. I won't trade for booze in non tree barrels and I won't make beds if I don't have enough tower caps. I even bring some on embark. And I haven't played since the hauling changes so I've always had to use the stocks screen to mass forbid and reclaim.

Also you can't just live in dirt like that it won't smooth and is unfit for anything but farms. and farms aren't big open messes like that they should be self contained plots in small rooms and the cardinal directions should be single season plump helmets so that it works as a calendar and you can tell what season it is by which plot is sown.

To what extent are you staying at the helm, Leperflesh? You mentioned that you'll always stay in touch with the overseer, and I don't imagine you'd ever interfere in the actual running of the game, but will you exert editorial influence to keep the narrative going in the right tone/direction?

Not really. At a higher level, I may make requests of the overseer regarding the state of the fortress itself: mostly stuff like "please don't end the game yet, it's too early". But this is a true succession game, and I'm not enforcing a meta-plot. I deliberately made Leperfish's term have a conclusion that leaves things open, and while some of what happened in my year has been interpreted as foreshadowing, I tried to make sure I didn't start plot threads that needed to be revisited later.

That's not to say I won't provide (potentially extensive) guidance if it is requested, though. If anyone wants help I'm the first resource to go to. But it's entirely voluntary.

I would like to say I am one of the destined ones, but I really am not. I've been moving from fortress to fortress, hoping to find one to settle down in, but the earth has yet to sing for me, really. I'm heading to a new fortress now, Bronzestabbed (Kilruzdat to those unfamiliar with our tongue), and... [the entry trails off with a scratch, as if the author is surprised. It resumes in a slightly shakier hand]... Oh dear oh dear oh dear... I've been made an overseer of the place? The messenger literally caught up to us halfway there, just handed me the drat scroll and left. The queen orders, and there's something about a Noble Work, which a 'Leperfish' Kelkstaud will apparently fill me in on once I arrive. In the meantime, the fortress shall go on as normal until I arrive.

I need a drink. Possibly many drinks.

I'd like to petition for overseers to not abuse stonecrafting. It's so dull and utilitarian. If you're going to make crafts and instruments and things for trading, make them out of something nice, like precious metals and alloys, or high quality glass. Spamming rock crafts just to max out your caravan purchasing power is boring.

(Also, I will hold in great esteem any overseer who makes pots and jugs out of glass and clay pottery/porcelain, instead of those drab, ugly stone pots!)

Honestly, with the changes to how digging out boulders works, if you're spamming crafts like that you might actually hit shortages of stone. You get a lot less stone then you used to.

True. And now that smelting is way more fuel efficient, you can make a lot more fancy decorative metals without wasting all your coal. I wanna see entire rooms of black bronze and brass furniture.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is don't just take the path of least resistance when it comes to crafting stuff. Fill your halls with fancy shiny pretty things!

Also blocks are now way more useful. Four per boulder, each one makes a wall section or an entire workshop that's not rough stone? And building things out of blocks takes less time then out of stones, even without accounting for how slowly dwarves carry raw stone around? Yes please.

We seem to be making a lot of demands of Overseers. I don't remember this being as much of a feature previously. Bearing in mind some overseers have attempted mass genocide, ozymandias-style Rube Goldberg machines and solitary confinement torture, I think it's nicer to give people free rei(g)n. Maybe 'Made in Bronzestabbed' becomes a stamp associated with lovely holiday rock gifts? So be it! As long as its written up in a fun way and the resulting stone shortage results in at least one hastily-dug cave in.

Stone now drops at a fixed, and lower, rate rather than at a rate dependant on the miners skill. It came in with the hauling changes to stone (You need wheelbarrows or minecarts to move stone easily).

Ore is subject to the same drop percentages as stones. Gems are always collected.

Stone now produces one rock every four or so tiles you clear (including economic and metal-producing stones), but to counter-balance it making blocks and bars now produces more of both (for the sake of production). The downside is, less big stones means less stone crafts/pots/etc.

The chance of a mined out square dropping a boulder/ore is now a fixed 25%, regardless of the miner's skill. On the other hand, each boulder can be carved into 4 blocks, and each ore can be smelter into 4 bars.

I'm not saying people shouldn't build whatever they want, I guess I'm just suggesting that if you go out of your way to make lots of cool things out of the highest quality materials available, it gives the fort more character. In comparison, just building twenty craft shops and putting rock crafts on repeat as a means of filling the trade depot seems kinda gamey, and gaminess is never good for the story. I dunno, maybe that's just a pet peeve of mine though

If you want to ace trading from the get-go, just have your carpenters churn out spiked wooden balls and en. wooden corkskrews, they have really high value.

I know how you feel, but I'm sure we can count on the overseers commitment to entertaining us. Hell, I kind of enjoyed it when Vox Nihili (I think?) decided to churn out lovely rock crafts to finance Gemclods alcoholism and mad engineering schemes.

That was me and I still maintain the sweatshops were a brilliant plan, even if it ensured no useful moods would arise for the remainder of the game. :D

In fact, if I recall, it was a direct usurping of Vox's plan to produce legendary armor/weapon crafters by having everyone spend a little time in the forge. ;)

True. I do see your point, but I don't want the Overseers (particularly new ones who might be (understandably!) daunted by taking over) to feel pressured.

Also since you're mandating to forbid the construction of stone crafts, to be true to DF you'd now need to mandate their export, right?

I started reading Gemclod a few months back, only recently got around to reading the last few updates and the epilogues. There's a great moment with the adventurer dwarf travelling to Gemclod who realises he's getting close, not from the smell or the road of skulls or the beak dogs, but because all the local human villages are loaded down with stone tat trade goods. Whatever crap you produce, Dwarf Fortress remembers.
