There. Look at this. See? See? I'm right again. Nobody could've predicted that Crackmaster would suddenly, suddenly jump out of a perfectly safe fortress. There's Kelli, another example. See, here I'm now sitting by myself, uh, er, talking to myself. That's, that's chaos theory Dwarf Fortress.

Nope. The "zone" overlay is covering the walls. The room isn't actually square:

this is correct. You can draw a zone over dirt and it doesn't stop being dirt. In this case, in order to see what's stockpiled in the hospital, you have to look at the zone menu (i).

And what if I actually wanted two pairs of boots and gauntlets? Huh? What then, smarty-pants? There's three dwarfs in the military so that's still only four boots to share between them.

Our bulwark thrives despite rude new arrivals. I have instructed Crackmaster in understanding our crude stone still as best I may. If we strike more tin, I will request for tubes and pots of bronze. Her first attempt in wine was as good as mine yet two of the fresh slab went without admit and drank from a dirty pond near the swirling doom instead. I would have chastised, but I am sure the fortress chief had arrangements. I consoled Crackmaster by downing double ration of her batch and reassuring it was well and decadent. She paid no mind and compared batch to her prickle berry experiment instead.

Not two days ago we struck blind stone. It is milky like seer's eyes yet as common and prevalent as near sight. Crackmaster will have good practice on it and the fool's steel made from the dining hall walls some time ago. I hope she is inspired by lord Dakas and a ring or a statuette of solid gleaming ensues. I also hear the fresh bronze is being put to the heads and hands and shoulders of our hulking militiamen. This is very early and thus good also.

I am glad to feed this many even if my sausages disappoint. Lookouts have sighted lights in the far distance past night, yet days are rainy. Tomorrow may be fogless enough for us to see visitors or invaders in proper. I hope they are visitors.

These dwarves ain't right. A bunch of new folk showed up, and some of they seem to be a few eggs short of a roc's nest...or however that expression is supposed to go. Point is they could be crazy. Some of them walked right towards the blighted lands without no protection and drank heartily from the putrid waters. Then they walked right back like it was nothing. Who the hell does that? I'll tell you who; creatures of the night. I think some of them might be in league with evil. Or they're just insane. Either way, we gotta keep a close eye on them.

This Fitzy Fitz guy is probably their leader. He's been involved with a bunch of cults and is always going on about death and other grim crap. A real overseer would keep him under close watch, but of course Leperfish just lets him go unchecked. I sure as poo poo wouldn't. drat fool won't even let me go hunting yet.

Furious birdnipples.
So I made a thing you could, if one of you want to, use as a story element later on. It was fun to make anyways, so I won't feel bad if it doesn't fit in.

I don't normally keep my journal updated, I do not enjoy writing, or feel any need for it in normal times.

But I have seen something that will not leave my mind's eye. Something I dare not tell the other caravan guards.

Yesterday, we struck camp near a cave, after we spotted another dust storm.
I do not know if these storms are dangerous, but they have an ominous look about them, and I do not like them. Neither does anyone else in the caravan

We had horse lung stew for supper, and I was relieved of guard duty, So I went for a walk. I brought a parchment, a quill, a brush and some ink in hopes of having a bit of fun sketching the wildlife, which the storm was not yet close enough to scare away.

As I sat down on a rock on top of a hill, I saw something strange. A haggard figure trudging ever so slowly across a valley floor east of me. There was something very strange about him about him, and I dared not approach.

He was carrying some sort of walking stick, with strange, twisted skulls of creatures I do not know, his robe was so tattered, I was not sure what was keeping it together. On a dangling chain, hung the strangest book, also encrusted with skulls of strange, unnerving things with several eyes, and bulging shapes. And strangest of all, he was followed by an immense cloud of flies and gnats, I could also smell something vile, like a heap of rotting cadavers, or a long abandoned food stockpile, wafting upwind from his direction.

Not knowing what to do, I drew him. For several minutes as he slowly waddled his way across the valley floor, I hastily scribbled down that hideous visage. Maybe the other men in camp would believe me? They know I am not a man of fertile imagination.

I had just finished painting him, when I saw something that made me break my quill and spill ink on the parchment.

Ambushers. Elves. Dozens of them charging over a hill opposite of mine, barreling straight at the small, hunched man-shape. I just saw the robed person reach for a pouch at his belt, before I was overcome with a strong need to get away from the strange and gruesome display.

As I was running down the other side of the hill, I heard screams, first, battlecries. Then, screams of surprise that quickly turned into screams of pain.

I stopped and looked back.

Something made me stalk as silently as I could back up the side of the hill. I had to see. As I was sneaking up the slope, the screams lessened.
I poked my head up above the rock, and on the top of the next hill, quickly dissapearing out of sight, was a bloated, horribly misfigured, wrong-looking thing, running after three slender elf-figures. The floor of the valley was littered with mangled elf corpses.

There, in the middle of the carnage, I saw his tome, a small stump of the chain remained attached to the cover.

I ran down, and grabbed the book, then got away from there as fast as I could.

When I got back to the camp, I urged the group to leave with haste. I did not tell them why, but the urgency in my voice persuaded them.
Later, when they asked why we left, I was reluctant to speak the truth, and pointed at the ever looming dust clouds on the horizon.

I still have the book. Maybe it will fetch me a fair price? Though I am tempted to just throw it in a river, the strange drawings within unnerve me. Depicting unwholesome rituals and odd symbols.

[I may make the book too It was supposed to be filled with ways to appease a certain deity of deformity and disease, as well as ways to harness his power (defense zombies anyone? assuming the storm actually makes undead creatures.)]

IN OTHER NEWS
I really really wanted to finish up all of my year by the end of today. Because tomorrow I'm getting on a plane. But I haven't, and even though I've rushed today I have too much poo poo to do. So here's what's going to happen.

Tomorrow, June 29th, there probably won't be an update. I mean, I'm gonna work from my laptop and maybe on the plane it'll all get done and then I'll post from the hotel on friday night but it's unlikely.

Saturday, June 30th, there will definitely be an update. I have my work laptop, I have access to my wife's laptop, and I've actually already taken a bunch of screenshots and poo poo so it's mostly a matter of editing and writing and I can do that even if I have any problems running DF.

Sunday there will probably be an update, and it'll probably be the final update for my turn. If not, then there will definitely be an update Monday, and that one will definitely be the last one (unless it's not for some weird reason I can't predict).

PRECAUTIONS
I have everything backed up on my PC.
I have everything backed up on a USB thumb drive.
I have everything backed up on my work PC.
I have everything backed up on my personal web space.

WORST CASE SCENARIO
If for some reason I cannot get updates done while I'm away, I will end my year where I'm at currently (which is .9 of an update past the one I posted today). I'll post my epilogue (which is written), and hand off the save to the next person. That's obviously not ideal, but it's hardly a disaster.

I'M SORRY
I've known about this travel for ages but I spent too much time this month doing prep work and should have started a few days earlier. I really thought I'd manage to do three-month updates, four in total, and that'd be that, but my natural tendency to mash the screenshot button constantly, combined with my natural tendency towards verbiosity (can you tell?) conspired with my overcommitment to projects this month to push me into this situation.

ANYWAY
If I hadn't said anything probably nobody would even know, except that I've been doing daily updates and tomorrow there probably won't be one. I just believe in full disclosure for these things when there's >400 people following along. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
