SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- An Alabama man has been charged with assault after authorities say he charged at three U.S. Border Patrol agents with his car while trying to flee from a traffic stop in Texas.
David Steiner, 38, of Vinegar Bend, Ala., is facing three counts of assault and one count of possession of a stolen firearm.
Steiner agreed Thursday morning to stay in federal custody until his trial date, according to the Justice Department.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Steiner forced Border Patrol agents to drive off the paved road in an attempt to avoid a collision with the Alabama man on May 25. Agents chased after Steiner, who was stopped when he hit an oncoming car, killing two people and "gravely injuring" a third.
Border Patrol agents said they found a .22 caliber rifle in Steiner's car. He knew the rifle was stolen, according to agents.
Steiner could face up to 20 years in prison for each assault charge and up to ten years in prison for the stolen firearm charge.
