kernow43
This is really bad. 815 stores under threat, a lot of people will be out of work. BBC NEWS | Business | Woolworths set for administration
Guest treesea
Yes, bad news about Woolworths, but on the other hand Lidl, Aldi's and Asda are still opening stores left, right and centre. So it isn't all doom and gloom.

Guest Neesie
Whilst I was visiting South Africa during the summer I went into a Woolworth's store in Cape Town. This was nothing like the store in my home town - it was like stepping into Marks and Spencer's. Good quality produce and products displayed in a pleasing enviroment which made shopping a pleasure. The UK outlets seem very tired, dated and not exactly inviting. I would never contemplate going into a Woolies unless I knew that they had what I wanted. Where did the Woolworth's of my youth disappear to? I would anticipate most of the week my Saturday morning visit clutching my pocket money. Hours would disappear as I'd walk around the shop on the creaky wood block floor! It used to be a quality store and would always deliver a wonder of delights from toys, to sweeties. A real treat. Maybe I'm looking back with rose coloured glasses. Hopefully what happened in South Africa will happen to the UK stores and we will move Woolies into the future and not lose yet another big name from our memory. Fingers crossed Good Luck! TheBrammies
not such bad news really the stores will be taken over these stores will employ people so not such a great loss of jobs ,i like woolworths but the difference between stores in different towns is unbelievable woolworths have turnover of around 2 billion and only made 18 million profit last year its been a dinosaur for years lets hope its replaced with a more efficient business that will employ just has many if not more people

It's owned by Marks and Spencers, that's why they are so similar, you even get them at the petrol stations just like over here! The sad thing for Woolies is that thereare a lot of people whohave worked there for 25 - 35 years, they will get no golden handshake or pension... that's really sad.. James... Guest jbro31
I was going to post about this but found somebody already had, my OH and I were talking about this, doesn't Oz have a woolies? Or am I getting muddled with something else? Has/is there any impact over there? We were curious as to the financial impact globally as opposed to just affecting the UK, anyone any comments or info on this? x

Guest WARDStoOZ
What a shame about Woolworths! Let's hope that other companies can survive... I wouldn't bank on it though...!!! Regards, Dan xx
