A nice slow mauling ending in death is the best outcome from a were* attack. If the attack doesn't kill the victim can turn into a were* later, in the middle of your dining room or hospital. If the were kills too quickly, it will move on to kill more dwarfs. With a werething you really want him to take his time, savor the moment.

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

JamieTheD has posted updates on July 4, 6, 8, and 9. I think picking up the save can take an extra day, so, I think the pace so far is reasonable. Obviously I'd like to see another update by the end of tomorrow, but I think that's already been promised, so that's OK.

I posted updates nearly daily, but that was partially due to a significant rush on my part (vacation coming up), and partially because I did a lot of preparation in advance. An update every other day meets the pace I'm asking for.

As for how much time is covered in each update: that's up to the Overseer. I've put a lot of thought into it and decided that trying to put hard limits on that was unlikely to lead to higher quality: I want writers to have the flexibility to make updates that suits their style, events actually happening in the game, and inspiration.

Finally, keep in mind Jamie is currently dealing with the always very large Spring-Year-2 migration.

Interlude 3: An Excerpt from Understanding the Beast, by James Imagefishing, 320

There are many dark beasts in the world we live in. So many, in fact, that many are drawn to the point where a lone traveller may wonder: Is everything just a plaything of evil? The answer, dear reader, is somewhat tangled, but the example of Len 'Visioncuddle' Kisnastorspa provides at least part of this answer. Len Kisnastorspa was a werehyena of some small note, having met his end at the spear of 'Nomikos' Berinal, a dwarven heroine of some note from the ill-fated Bronzestabbed fortress. The tale is a woeful one, as Nomikos carried her child into battle, whereupon it was rapidly swept from her back and devoured by the blood crazed Kisnastorspa. It was viciously wounded by Nomikos before it could be killed, but this only occurred once its 'Time of Change' had passed, and it reverted to its human form.

To understand why this beast exists, one must go back, before it was a beast. To understand the beasts without, one must first understand the beasts within. Len Kisnastorspa was not always a were creature. He was once a Jeweler in the human town of Tattoodress, son of Muthe 'Swallowedlegends' Cocuen and Turot 'Hushmatched' Espraala. Born in 187, Len lived a simple life, well respected, maybe even liked (the records are unclear), but met misfortune in the form of the elf Ceca 'Sparkledplain' Epeveyeme , who horribly mauled him. He somehow survived, but was thereafter a werecreature. This event happened in the late spring of 204, and he was eventually discovered, and cast out, in 205.

From there, his history is largely unremarkable to his violent end, presumably killing animals on his travels, lairing in a place known as The Gutters of Justifying, and killing only one other humanoid, an elf, Iwo Glossnatch. He had attacked other before, Meyi 'Blanketvale' Therelafo in 216, and was confronted by Ruyava 'Lurenut' Lanebeapasi in the same year (Ruyava forced Len to flee, such was his [Ruyava's] ferocity). Neither were infected, and so their story ends here, as does Len's. But understanding eludes us, and so we are forced to go backwards. To Ceca 'Sparkledplain' Epeveyeme.

Ceca was, herself, a victim of circumstance, born in 81, only daughter of Imaza 'Passedcrow' Raneminaro and Pili 'Tickedwinds' Weleamatha (notable only for eating a human he had killed in 158) . She lived a normal, healthy life in the elven settlement of Planestone, becoming a weaver and marrying Masami 'Glittertreasures' in 93. At 96 years of age (Year 177), she was attacked and turned into a werehyena by the human Anir 'Guardedsprinkle', and was last seen in 233, tearing into a skunk and only recognised by tattered remnants of her dress, in a pattern that she herself had created the year before her turning. And so, we go back, once more, to Anir 'Guaradedsprinkle'

Anir 'Guardedsprinkle', otherwise known as Anir Ocgicosin Bedo Adu (Anir Guardedsprinkle the Distance of Boards), was born in 71, to Adil 'Blushhorn' Donasiskak and Lide 'Lanternthunder' Sebaturot. A restless man, whose parents both died before he was 40, we can note that he first settled in Creedbite, marrying Gili 'Cookedglows' Lemquemer and becoming a farmer in 83. Perhaps his life was ill omened, for he left Creedbite seven years later, and was unheard of in history until 90, where he took up residence in Teacherechoed of the League of Bakers in Stylemoons (132). This life obviously didn't suit him much, as he became ringleader of The Warriors of Subtlety (A bandit group) in 139, and profaned the altar of Vost, a goddess of longevity, youth, rebirth, and birth in 174. The goddess, angry at this trespass, cursed him to take the form of a Hyena-man when the moon was full (Now known as a Dark Rebirth among worshippers of Vost), and cast him out into the world, where he spread his curse for many years. He was eventually slain by the elf Nino 'Questedgrowl' Elabeula (A minor elven hero, most noted for killing a Hill Giant in 191, then being killed by a Giant Tiger two years later) in 188, 14 years later, but had by then infected 2 elves, slain as many again, killed three humans, and attacked many more of all races.

The Werehyena is the least of the werecreatures, merely being quick, as opposed to overly strong, yet these three have perhaps cause more death and misery than the average human does in a lifetime. Families reft by an ancient curse gone wild, murders of children and women... We now take a step towards understanding the beast. In our next chapter, we shall deal with the Murk, and its strange effects on a being's anatomy.

You're kidding, right? I'm not enraged, I'm simply pointing out something we all know, which is that turns for LPs like this run the risk of taking forever, which is annoying to everybody and was important enough to Leperflesh that he emphasized it when he set up the game. Now, if you're going to do the first month and a half in one week and the next ten and a half months in four days, then that's great (but admittedly strange, right?), but at your current pace, the turn is going to last more than two real months, which is more than a tad slow and justifies the concern that some folks have already expressed about the pace of this thing.

You shouldn't be so taken aback by any of this.

1. There is no requirement that each Overseer do an entire in-game year.
2. There is no requirement that any given update cover a specific amount of in-game time.
3. Any update that contains a narrated battle is likely to only cover a few days of in-game time, by its very nature.
4. I am in regular communication with JamieTheD (and will be with every other Overseer) and I assure you all that if updates become too slow or a turn drags out too long, I will deal with that directly.

I appreciate your concerns and I am listening, but I also feel that it's too easy to discourage someone and wind up pressuring them into posting crappy updates, dropping the save, or otherwise quitting when that wasn't necessary. Let's avoid "piling on," and try to couch criticism in terms that makes it friendly rather than aggressive. Thanks.

Interlude 4: Migrant Report

To Sankis, Ugath rot your beard for putting me here!

As you may remember, the first migrant wave was 22 dwarves, counting myself. I am enclosing notes on the dwarves who are important to the fortress plans, although other dwarves have been noted.

Military Dwarves

Zaodai Cattendalzat. A solid swordsdwarf, will be placed in the Stormy Lancers once we have a sword for him. Also a fisherdwarf, like his wife... could be useful, may just be risky as all hell. I am allowing them to fish for now.

Olesh, a ranger by profession, will be placed under Internet Kraken, as Olesh was thoughtful enough to bring his own bow. His animal training will serve us well, although it worries me that he is reported as “slow to heal and quick to tire”

Again, most likely to be placed in the One Way Outs. Internet Kraken will find a small challenge with this one.

Once again, a candidate for the Stormy Lancers, although he needs an axe of his own.

Hammerdwarf and architect, could be useful later, but for now, waiting on a hammer and assignment to the Stormy Lancers.

One for the One Way Outs, if we can get him a bow. Otherwise of limited use for now.

Industrydwarves

Steke will help with the expansion of the fortress, although, if we can get some bows and bolts, she will also be appended to the One Way Outs. Not all threats should be dealt with up close.

I don't trust anyone who calls themselves by their profession, but I can't deny TheArchivist is a professional. Not much use until we dig deeper though, unless we really want statues or pretty places.

While not of immediate use in his primary capacity (need more charcoal for that), Psalmanazar is nonetheless useful in his other capacities as a butcher, milker, and herbalist.

Others (A List)

Apeynap Sholidlorbam, male Farmer
Boing Ilralenseb, female Child (My child, in fact)
Falgund Paintedbeauty, female Thresher and Cook
Geri Khan Idlektad, female Farmer and Cook
Hutter, female Glassmaker and Fisherdwarf (more useful than the other one)
John Dough Zasitrilem, male Brewer and Mechanic
Kaboom Besmarzimkel, male Bone Doctor
La Croix Zanegegul, male Gem-cutter
Magrov Tekkudkizest, male Tanner
NineOfEight, female Glassmaker (Useless sod)
Senae Nishbecor, male, Claims to be a Farmer, is actually a Cook.
Slick Slinky Signukadol, male Child.
Tendales Rovodrash, female Wood Burner
Tirius Basenmedtob, female Fish Cleaner
Tunicate, male Miner and Milker
Vorpal Swordfish, female Stone Crafter

Final Note

There appears to have been a clerical error. I know I'm beardless, but... I am not a woman, although the official records allude to me as such, and... I'm an accountant, not a Spinner! Although I did do some of that, and farming, and the like in the past, I was shocked to note that my accomplishments as an accountant (proving that 2+2=73 in dwarven stock records) went un-noticed, and I have been marked as 'unskilled' in book-keeping!

I shall most heartily complain!
