The unit is sort of O. K. One problem I found was that the centers were out of alignment which could be a specific problem with what I received. When you add the cost of the lathe with that of a drill I find that for the same amount a better and more versatile lathe with multiple speeds could be purchased. Regret the hasty purchase.

Received this machine, box was crushed, and end broken open, I was concerned at first, thinking it was just poor shipping. Opened tool and set it up, tightened down the tail stock and the tail stock split from mounting bolt to rail. Frustraited I thought maybe it was just operater error. and tried to order just the tail stock. But this lathe has been discontinued so you cannot get parts for it. Grizzly was accomodating and said since I bought it through Amazon I had to make a claim through them. So i sent back the broken part, I am still waiting word on the refund part, dont know how long it will take. will have to see, will update later. Overall the casting on part that broke seems thin and the clearance for tightening up tail stock does not go all the way to the rail so if you tighen it enough to where it wont creep during using, the casting will give way. I believe it is a poor tail stock design.

I've enjoyed mine but you really need to make sure the rails are mounted VERY firmly ... not clamped, MOUNTED. Otherwise there is much skipping and whatnot from the vibration. I bought mine as an experiment and essentially a fun "toy" and have greatly enjoyed it. I was looking up plans for how to build a lathe using a power drill as the power unit and found this item (MUCH cheaper and easier than building one, I must say).

Overall, the lathe (really a lathe-like jig) is well designed and built, and is far better and cheaper than anything I could have hacked together. I had it set up in about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, the threaded shaft on mine that goes into the drill chuck and then screws into any number of other accessories has severely eccentric threads meaning the entire piece (or sanding disc) wobbles excessively. I called Grizzly tech support and gave them the part number of the defective screw and they said for inexpensive tools like this ( < $100) they cannot send out individual replacement parts from stock--the entire thing must go back. Thinking this was wasteful, I went to home depot to buy a M12 bolt, cutting the head off and chucking the smooth part of the bolt, but found the spur center was also out of round causing serious wobble. So I'm going to send the whole thing back to hopefully get a better one.

That aside, I tried turning a small 6" 2x2 piece of pine and found that once everything was locked down well, worked well for the most part. Various parts kept coming loose until tightened seemingly excessively (wear eye protection!). Even after cutting down below the radius of the piece, it never got perfectly round due to the wobble and I could always feel this in the chisel.

That said, if and when the defective part(s) are replaced, I think the system will be totally adequate for turning handles and other small wooden parts which is what I wanted it for in the first place. I think if you're clever, you could even mount the tailstock on another board and increase the maximum length beyond 2'.

Obviously, your experience will depend a lot on the drill you have. You'll never get the same cutting power as a floor tool with a flywheel, but if you can keep the RPMs up, it will power through heavier cutting. I would suggest gearing down (if your drill supports it) for rough cutting, although to get the RPMs up in low gear, your drill will probably be very noisy due to the fans and gearbox running at a much higher speed. Save high gear for finish work and sanding.

    --- Update ---

I sent the package off to Grizzly to have the defective parts replaced, and received an entire new system promptly. Unfortunately, the new parts don't fare much better. The wobble (runout) is still problematic and renders the sanding disc and center spur to be unusable. On the plus side, I tried that sheared-off M12 bolt with the spur, and the combination worked and spun true. Because I found a combination that worked, I think I will keep the tool, but it's unfortunate that I had to provide a fix myself. Because this is a systemic manufacturing problem, I'm lowering the rating to 3 stars.

The bottom line is that for the price, you can't expect tight tolerances in the machined parts. However, if you're willing to send it off multiple times and provide your own bolt (bought or machined yourself) you may be in luck and find a combination that works. The cast and extruded components which require less precision to manufacture are adequate and provide most of the overall value for the setup.

    --- update 2 ---

The spur center is wobbling again--apparently the way it's machined depends on very precise alignment of the threads and any slippage causes it to go out of true. I just got lucky when I tried it with my own bolt. I'm now sending it back for a refund. Unless you're buying this for an 8 year old turning balsa, don't waste your time.

    --- update 3 ---
Attached is video of the runout on the spur center. This was from the second one they sent me, but the first was similar. They decided to charge me a restocking fee because it was found not to be defective, which this video clearly shows isn't true. This is all a waste of time, but I feel other buyers should be aware of their shoddy quality control. It would be a shame for you to get the "new" but restocked, defective item I sent back.

I bought this for husband because I saw it featured on "Cool Tools". I thought it would be a good beginners lathe for doing small turning projects. He was not impressed with the performance of this tool and returned it. I guess you get what you pay for.
