The BCHF board recently adopted this statement of our values, consisting of six points: inclusive and diverse voices, evidence-based storytelling, supporting preservation, accessible and relevant, informal and professional, and transparent and ethical.

The BCHF needs a treasurer

Due to a recent resignation, the BC Historical Federation is looking to fill the role of treasurer. Are you able to fill the role? Do you know someone who can? BCHF explorer-in-residence completes his journey

Bert ter Hart, our explorer-in-residence, who has been canoeing his way across Canada since April 1, has reached his final destination in Shippegan, New Brunswick. Black Pioneers in BC: Economic, Political, and Social Influences

The Friends of the BC Archives host a speakers series, which are provided in person in Victoria, as well as online through Zoom. The October speaker is Fran Morrison, who on Sunday afternoon will tell the story of the migration and settlement of Black people in BC, starting in 1858.

BC History Digitization Program calls for submissions

The British Columbia History Digitization Program is now accepting applications for project funding. The program, initiated by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre in 2006, provides matching funds to support digitization projects that make unique British Columbia content freely available.

1926 footage of Namgis First Nation discovered

Vernon historian/videographer Francois Arsenault has unearthed footage of the Namgis First Nation filmed at Alert Bay nearly a century ago. 

Students produce tribute to Semiahmoo First Nation

Semiahmoo Secondary students have created a film to strengthen ties with the Semiahmoo First Nation. Mehak Dhaliwal, Dasnoor Kaur, Jasmine Mangat and Simrit Mangat created Truth and Reconciliation: A Tribute to the Semiahmoo First Nations.

Nominations open for BC and Yukon Book Prizes

Nominations are open until Dec. 1 for the annual BC and Yukon Book Prizes, which celebrate the achievements of British Columbia and Yukon writers, illustrators, and publishers. Meanwhile, nominations for the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing, presented by the BCHF, are open until Dec. 31.

Cole Harris (1936-2022): Historical geographer

UBC professor Cole Harris, who has died at 86, was a prominent historical geographer. He also wrote several books about the history of the Slocan Valley, where his family has had the Bosun Ranch since 1897.
