Enquirer's high school athlete of the week winners, Aug. 26

In a vote that ended Aug. 26, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Aug. 21.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. This was the first ballot for the 2022-2023 school year.

The winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Reading – Reading exploded in the opening week, topping Lockland in a 72-6 blowout.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Holy Cross – Holy Cross led 34-0 at halftime and allowed Bellevue just 12 total yards in the 48-0 shutout.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: Taylor golf – The Jackets have won all three of their matches to start the year, including a 183-226 victory over Finneytown on Aug. 16.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Goshen volleyball – Goshen started its season with three wins on Aug. 20, defeating Reading, Norwood and Madeira.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Newport Central Catholic soccer – The Thoroughbreds tied Cooper 1-1 before beating Holmes 10-0 and Campbell County 4-0 to improve to 5-0-1.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: St. Henry soccer – The Crusaders won the 9th Region All “A” Classic, defeating Newport Central Catholic 10-2 in the finals. St. Henry scored 21 goals in the tourney’s three games.

Boys cross country runner of the week: Bradyn Hatton, East Central – The sophomore finished eighth in the Richmond Invitational to lead the Trojans.

Girls cross country runner of the week: Chloe Hurm, St. Henry – The sophomore finished fourth in the Notre Dame Pandas Classic to lead the Crusaders to the team title.

Boys golfer of the week: Keegan World, Madeira – At Beckett Ridge on Aug. 17, World medaled with a 42 as Madeira defeated Fenwick 174-196.

Girls golfer of the week: Kristen Link, Seton – Link medaled for Seton with a 39 at Hamilton Elks to help beat Lakota West 177-188.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Jaxon Schreiber, Oak Hills – The senior quarterback was 10-for-17 for 118 yards passing, connecting with Jacob Day for a passing touchdown. His running game made the difference, as he ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns, including an 8-yarder and a 29-yarder to clinch the 31-20 win over Turpin Aug. 19. It was the Highlanders’ first win since October 2020.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Max Autry, Madeira – He had eight catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns in Madeira’s 37-8 win over Norwood.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Yurii Collins Comer, Lloyd Memorial – He led the Juggernauts with 57 rushing yards and 13 tackles during their 13-12 loss to Dixie Heights.

Ohio boys soccer player of the week: Joel Harris, Oak Hills – The junior scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Carroll.

Ohio girls soccer co-player of the week: Brooke Wilson, Turpin – She had four goals in the first week, including a hat trick in the 7-1 win over Hamilton Aug. 17 and a goal in the 2-0 win over Fairfield Saturday.

Ohio girls soccer co-player of the week: Sophia Wampler, St. Ursula – The senior scored three goals in a win over Mason.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Mason Arevalo, Conner – He scored both goals to lead the Cougars to a big 2-1 win over perennial Ninth Region contender Highlands Aug. 18.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Amanda Schlueter, St. Henry – She posted seven goals and three assists in two games to lead the Crusaders to the All “A” Classic Ninth Region championship.

Girls tennis player of the week: Eden Chin, Lebanon – The junior is 2-0 at first singles, and 5-0 at second singles, to start off the year. She was 4-0 over the past week with wins over conference rivals Milford and Anderson.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Callie Combs, Seton – Combs had nine kills and tied a team-high with 12 digs in Seton’s straight-set win over Turpin Aug. 20.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Lyla Schmitt, Fenwick – Schmitt had 19 kills in Fenwick’s four-set win over CHCA Aug. 20.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Audrey Griffin, Scott – The senior posted 94 assists, 19 per match, and 39 digs, nearly eight per match, to lead the Eagles to a 5-0 record Aug. 20 at Bracken County and the championship at Bracken’s Glacier Invitational.
