Take Action! Our New Campaigns

*Election 2004 Global Warming Challenge*
In a couple weeks, Americans will head to the polls. But despite
mounting evidence that global warming is happening, voters hear
very little on the issue from candidates running for office.
Enough is enough! On global warming, America's voters deserve
more. Send a message to candidates - Democrats and Republicans,
challengers and incumbents - challenging them to talk about
global warming as they campaign for office. Take action:

Activists at Work - Updates and Victories

*Victory! Dirty Diesel Engine Loophole Closed!*
Thanks to almost 45,000 emails from Environmental Defense
activists, a rule cleaning up dirty diesel exhaust is now final.
The Clean Air Nonroad Rule will phase in cleaner fuel and
engines for "nonroad" vehicles used in construction, mining,
farming, and other commercial sectors. Nonroad engines release
more dangerous fine sooty particles than any other
transportation source and are a serious public health problem.
The US EPA estimates that by 2030, controlling pollution from
nonroad engines will prevent 12,000 annual premature deaths,
8,900 hospitalizations, and one million lost workdays. Find out

*Victory! California Backs Landmark Global Warming Plan*
In a landmark decision, the California air officials unanimously
adopted measures cutting greenhouse gas pollution from passenger
vehicles. Over 1,800 Environmental Defense activists in
California sent emails to officials supporting these tough new
global warming measures requiring automakers to reduce
greenhouse gas pollution from new vehicles by 30% in 2016.
Passenger vehicles and light trucks release 40 percent of all
greenhouse gas emissions in California, so this is a significant
step in the fight to undo global warming. Other states are
considering similar measures of their own. Stay tuned. Find out

*Global Warming: Undo It!*
In early October, the global fight to undo climate change got a
major boost when Russian announced it will ratify the long
stalled Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change. Why is this critical?
Because the Kyoto treaty requires ratification by one more major
country - like Russia -before it can take effect. Send an email
thanking President Vladimir Putin for Russia's leadership in the
fight against climate change:

While the rest of the world works toward a more stable climate,
the United States has left itself out. But the U.S. can still do
its part. How? By passing the Climate Stewardship Act, a
bipartisan bill that reduces greenhouse gas pollution in the
U.S. You can help by signing the Emissions Petition. Already
signed? Spread the word:

Undo It! campaign lit up Times Square in New York City in

*Oceans Alive Update*
Today we need a President who will champion our oceans, much
like Teddy Roosevelt, who protected millions of acres of wild
lands. Sign the Oceans Alive Pledge and join the nearly 25,000
activists who have sent this message to President Bush and
Senator Kerry. Already signed? Send an e-card to a friend. For
more information, to get tips on being a good oceans steward, or

*Get Green Tip of the Month - Healthy Seafood Choices*
If you choose to eat fish, choose catfish instead of orange
roughy, which can be high in mercury, a toxic pollutant. Not
only is catfish less expensive, but the trawls used to catch
orange roughy can destroy marine life and habitat. Learn more
eco-friendly tips on seafood:

*The Dangerous Days of Summer*
The Dangerous Days of Summer may be harming the health of
children in your city. Our new report ranks the top 50 cities
where dirty air - unhealthy soot, smog and other pollutants -
puts the most children at risk. Is your city on the list? Visit
Dangerous Days of Summer online to find out or to share with us
a story about how air pollution has affected you or someone you
know. Hundreds of stories have been shared so far:

*Environmental Defense Volunteers - Visiting Senators' Offices*
In September, Environmental Defense volunteers held a meeting
with Senator Hilary Clinton's staff about global warming. They
voiced their concerns about climate change and urged Senator
Clinton to fight to undo global warming nationally. Arrange your
own constituent meeting as an Environmental Defense volunteer.
