The hotel of choice for Hemingway and Coco Chanel (and a member of Leading Hotels of the World) received a highly anticipated $450 million renovation by AD100 Hall of Fame architect Thierry Despont in 2016 that was aimed at restoring its reputation as the world’s best hotel. The historic Hemingway Bar and Ritz Escoffier cooking school received a new polish, and novelties like the Salon Proust—named for the legendary French novelist who often dined at the Ritz—were added. In 2021, the hotel added an astrologically inspired bar, and in 2022 the Ritz Paris Club & Spa was reborn with a new concept. The hotel has 13 prestige suites, including suites named for Chanel and Proust, but the one to book is the Suite Impériale with views of Place Vendôme. The 3,600-square-foot suite boasts three bedrooms, including one modeled on Marie Antoinette’s bedroom at Versailles, complete with a silk-draped baldaquin bed. Opened in 1913, the Plaza Athenée claims the title of Paris’s haute couture address thanks to its location on famed shopping street Avenue Montaigne and its long relationship with Christian Dior, who opened his Avenue Montaigne boutique in 1947 to be close to the hotel’s sophisticated clientele. So it should come as no surprise that the most coveted (and pricey) suite is the Haute Couture Suite, which comes decked out in gray and pink furnishings (Dior’s colors), crystal chandeliers, ornate moldings, and silver-leaf details. Paris’s original palace hotel on the Rue de Rivoli is as glorious as ever thanks to a 2016 refresh of the public spaces by Philippe Starck, who looked to Salvador Dalí—a frequent guest—for inspiration. When the iconic property on Place de la Concorde reopened in 2017 after a top-to-bottom renovation, it not only upgraded the layout and decor of the palace originally built by 18th-century architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel for Louis XV, it also introduced the glorious Grands Appartements by Karl Lagerfeld, one of four designers who worked on the project. As the name suggests, it’s basically an apartment comprising two suites awash in muted gray tones inspired by “the silvery light of Paris.” Lagerfeld designed bespoke furniture, hung his own photographs, installed a dressing room hidden behind a bookshelf, and created an eye-popping bathtub carved from one massive block of marble. He also designed a room playfully dedicated to his cat, Choupette.
