Click here Vol 27 No 15 28 January 2022 Leinster School Girls' Junior Cup SuccessOn Wednesday 26 January The High School hosted the first round of the Leinster Rugby School Girls' Junior Cup. We got to wear HSD jerseys for the first time which really helped us look and feel like a team. There were two tournaments held simultaneously: the senior one on the 4G pitch and the junior one on the grass pitches. We won matches against Bandon Grammar School from Cork and Loreto Dalkey to top our pool. Wilson’s Hospital School topped their pool beating Wesley College and Gorey Community School. We played against Wilson’s Hospital School in the final and won 20-10! This earned us maximum points going into the next round. I should like to congratulate the girls on their defence because no tries were scored against us until the final when the opposition scored two.
Everyone made a huge contribution and gave it their all. East Leinster Cross Country ChampionshipsThe East Leinster Cross Country Championships took place in the Phoenix Park on Wednesday 26 January. The course was set out by the Papal Cross and was comprised of two loops; A loop (1000m) and a B loop (1500m). The course was primarily flat with some gentle undulating hills. This left for fast race conditions. The dry weather conditions made for ideal footing. The High School had competitors from Form 1 right up to Form 4 competing with many first timers to the world of cross country. Each pupil gave it their all and left it all out on the course. We must give a special mention to Aidan O’ Connor of Form 1 who won individual silver in a field of no less than 100
competitors. This is a superb achievement by any measure. Aidan also lead the team home to 4th position overall. What an achievement! Well done to all involved. Senior Hockey Cup WinOn Tuesday the High School Senior 1 team played St Columba’s College. With a great start we had already gone 1-0 up with a drag flick from Marcus Empey and soon after we had gone 2-0 up with a goal from Ben Pasley. Eli Breen scored our third from a short corner play. After the second half our opponents quickly scored after a defensive error. In the fourth quarter we had two more goals from Sam Maxwell and Marcus Empey. The game ended 5-1 and we are now through to semi-final of the Senior Cup. All Ireland Football LeagueCongratulations to High School pupil Millie Webb who has been selected to play for Bohemians Football Club in the Women's League of Ireland. We wish Millie and her team every success going forward. International Cricket RepresentationCongratulations to Orla Prendergast (HSD, 2014-20) and Head Girl Ella Pasley who have been selected for the Ireland Women’s Performance Squad and Women's Development Squad, respectively by Cricket Ireland. We wish Orla and Ella every success in all future competitions as they progress in the sport. Form 1 GeographyForm 1 pupils enjoyed a fun Geography class learning about farming as a system of inputs, processes, and outputs using this clever board game. STEM at HSD - Form 4 PhysicsIn our Form 4 Physics module we gave various presentations. One group made oobleck which is non-Newtonian subject that presents as both a liquid and solid. Oobleck is pressure dependant: if you tap on the surface of Oobleck will make it feel hard because it forces the cornstarch particles together but if dip your hand slowly into the mix and see what happens—your fingers slide in as easily like it’s water. We had so much fun making the oobleck and learning about it. This week has been so interesting. We really enjoyed learning about different Physics topics. Junior SciencePupils in Forms 1 and 2 have been busy in Science class making colourful cell models and neutralisation rainbows. Dates for your Diary
