Lancer Interlude: Round 5 – Turn 2 A roiling cloud of nanites enveloped Triada’s Black Witch, clinging to its outer armor and partially phasing it into another reality. She barely had time to twist as a pair of meter-long claws flashed out of the murk towards her mech. The Black Witch twisted, its hand never breaking contact with the Mag Field, and the swipe rent a chasm in the facility’s floor almost deep enough for an unarmored man to take cover in. I would 100% buy a PTN Battletech book if it came out, but I also am not sure I'd like it because I think my preferences have changed since my prime Battletech-reading days. At this point though I think I would really, really enjoy a PTN Lancer book. Just saying. If you want to make a "pay me extra to convince me to write a book" Patreon tier or something.

Conspiratiorist posted:Yeah taking out that Spite eased up the pressure a lot. We're burning a lot of resources (multiple core powers, several structure points, etc.) - this is a pretty nasty encounter with multiple high damage threats and a good support setup. However, two key principles of Lancer campaigns are: 1) It's 'fail forward' - the PCs are not expected to win every sitrep or every mission. The full game has some narrative tools to enable the game to move forward even when you don't assume the PCs win. Those don't apply so much in a one-shot format but what's important is to remember that despite the PCs being a 1:1 overmatch against even strong NPCs, the game is set up so that those strong PCs are at increasing risk over the course of a mission. A cannon shot to the face in the third sitrep is a lot scarier than in the first one because... 2) It's attritional - the PCs start off very, very strong with full resources and then the risks get larger and larger as those resources are depleted. Every hp, structure, stress, weapon mount, and system loss eats your repair cap between fights and eventually you have to decide what to fix. So we're not quite there yet (particularly because that Spite blowing up was pretty clutch, that would have some serious hurt) but certainly enroute. The mark of time in Lancer is when you are going into the last sitrep of a mission and you just don't have enough repair cap to be in fighting shape; like you're choosing between having no guns or rolling multiple "this blows you up if you roll a 1 here" dice the first time you get hit. We'll see if PTN manages to throw out enough hurt to push the team over that line before we win.

Lancer Interlude: Round 5 – Turn 3 A resounding explosion shook the complex as the mag field collapsed, sending every shell embedded in its membranous surface ricocheting around its interior for a few seconds. Every shot, every chipped armor plate, everything even remotely ferrous was turned into a projectile and thrown against the Mag Field’s occupants. The bounty hunter was shredded in seconds, the little scout lasted a few moments longer. The Avenger strode out of the smoke, its body dripping an ablative nanite shroud. At least the pilot seemed distracted, it didn’t reach for its shotgun or level its pistol anyone’s way. Instead, the auto-turret on its shoulder opened fire again, striking sparks from Triada’s armor and tearing through Charlotte’s Pegasus. Guilty as it made him feel, Frank breathed a sigh of relief. Lancer Interlude: Round 5 – Turn 4 “Automated repair systems activated,” Charlotte announced, as she skittered behind a pillar her Pegasus had already memorized the location of and into a little harder cover. It took a few moments for the nanites to switch her armor back together, but most importantly they replaced the wires that had been damaged by the scout’s optical attack. Ushabti voiced its displeasure as soon as the sensors it parasitized started feeding it clear data again. Its shots sparked off the Avenger’s armor, but the thinning nano-shroud the enemy mech still sported filled in the damage almost immediately. Lancer Interlude: Round 6 – Turn 1 Homage to thee, Osiris, Lord of eternity, King of the Gods, whose names are manifold, whos forms are holy, though being of hidden form in the temples, whose Ka is holy. Thou art a shining Spirit-Body, the governor of Spirit-Bodies; permanent is thy rank, established is thy rule. Thou art the well-doing Sekhem of the Company of the Gods, gracious is thy face, and beloved by him that see it. Thy fear is set in all the lands by reason of thy perfect love, and they cry out to thy name making it the first of names, and all people make offerings to thee. The Swallowtail’s NHP casket sang with incomprehensible noise as the self-important entity within leapt to respond to one of Frank’s orders—nay, requests. The thrumming vibration shook the little scout mech to the core as OSIRIS tensed its shackles near to the breaking point. Hail, O ye who make perfect souls to enter into the House of Osiris, make ye the well-instructed soul of the Osiris the scribe Ani, whose word is true, to enter in and to be with you in the House of Osiris. Let him hear even as ye hear; let him have sight even as ye have sight; let him stand up even as ye stand up; let him take his seat even as ye take your seats. “Liturgicode activated. And shall this day open the fourth gate,” OSIRIS recited emotionlessly, oblivious to the rising chorus that surrounded its physical shell. “And all mine friends shall dine in the House of Osiris!” Frank’s stomach did a flip as the whole universe seemed to do a flip on itself—and then nothing changed. OSIRIS’s casket went deadly silent, its occupant resting in its coded shackles. Frank scowled. One time in four, Osiris made a grand show of doing nothing at all. Another failure, just as disappointing as the first time it’d happened, when he and Triada had been jumped by a Trade Barony hit squad. “Get clear, Frank—you’re too close xenotech menace!” Frank’s friend, Argodile Mosswine called out a warning. “You won’t last long if it gets you with one of its tentacles!” “Right,” Frank muttered, kicking the Swallowtail into action. As he started to scuttle away, the worst happened: a nanite tendril wrapped around the Swallowtail’s right rear leg and pulled him bodily into the scouring shroud. “drat,” Mosswine cursed as Reply All lunged into motion and charged to the attempted rescue. He stretched out a hand in an attempt to arrest Frank’s motion, but the Swallowtail’s legs were ill equipped to grab back. With no other recourse, Frank froze and let the Swallowtail’s chameleonic armor kick in in the hopes that the lurking Xenotech mech would lose him in the gloom. Movement Map Combat Swallowtail (Player) - [Full Action] [Full Tech] Lock On to Avenger, Hurl into the Duat (4th Gate) vs Avenger, consuming Lock-On! - Locks On to Avenger - Hurl into the Duat (+1 accuracy) rolls (5 base + 7 roll + 3 accuracy = 15) vs. E-Def, hits! - - Avenger becomes an Allied NPC until the end of its next turn! - [Moves] to 1112! PTN’s note: As a (temporarily) allied NPC, the Avenger joins the player turn rotation unless someone frees it by one of Hurl into the Duat’s provisions. The players decide when it gets to go, and Round 6 has 5 turns). As I currently have no hostile units that haven’t acted, players have free reign until the Avenger’s turn, after which (because I’ll have a hostile unit available to take an action with again) the Avenger will act again immediately. But it's Lancer, it can't be that simple, so it's shifting you into a parallel universe or rewriting the timeline such that you've always been pals, which means that from the user's POV it seems like there's a ton of buildup and then nothing happens. That was fun fluff.

Lancer Interlude: Round 6 – Turn 2 Triada wasn’t sure her plan would work. Stretching out with the Black Witch’s magnetic lensing. She caught something, then felt nothing, no response from her magnetics. Normally she’d have assumed the other ‘Mech had managed to free itself and released her magnetic grip to try again; but nothing about this mech was particularly normal. Triada pulled anyway, and dragged the struggling Lurker from its cloud of protective nanites. She slammed it into a support pillar and opened fire. The Lurker reeled and shed armor plating and nanites like blood even before her impact lance hit it. As it started to reform its cloud, she put a shot into it from her pistol for good measure. Lancer Interlude: Round 6 – Turn 3 The lurker’s form faded away as the Ushabti kept chewing away at it, until finally it simply vanished without a trace, taking its cloying nanite clouds with it. “That was not as easy as I’d hoped,” She admitted. “Yeah, that was rougher than I thought it’d be,” Cap’n drawled, holding his pistol in a ready grip. “You guys nearly got plastered before I could get into position.” “Your mech’s a slow starter,” Frank grumbled. PTN’s note: And that’s mission complete! With the Avenger converted and no enemies left, it doesn’t get a turn so it can’t revert back into an enemy combat unit. That’s probably exactly how I’d roll with that in an actual campaign, too. Building up to the 4th gate is tricky and landing it on the last or second-to-last enemy mech is hardly a guarantee. Plus it means there’s an NPC to ‘guard the base’ or who you can trot out for important missions, or who can even serve as a backup NPC if someone decides to CASTIGATE THE ENEMIES OF THE GODHEAD a bit too hard. The other way the players could’ve won would’ve been blasting through the interior bunker door. It wouldn’t have been easy but with a little luck I believe the Everest could have done that solo in a single turn.

The Spite was a big problem so dealing with it took priority. After that, I was eyeing the blast door with a 3d6+4 plus 2d6+4 double skirmish. Hacking it open would've taken an additional round, since Disembarking is a Full Action, leaving no actions free to interact with the console, but it was an option if we needed more shooting since Nana could disembark close enough while ASURA took over the Everest. Another plan was to trap the Avenger behind a Stasis Barrier, but with PTN's determination that WOLOLOing counted for mission objectives, and the Mag Field deleting both the Strider and Veteran Scout, we went for just moping up the remaining Lurker.

Podima posted:Good job, team! Mag Field is a pretty tricky core power to use effectively, so using it when presented with a big blob of very dangerous enemies was kind of a no-brainer. After that it was pretty much just a turn by turn assessment of whether we were better off fighting or breaking away. I think ultimately the Spite getting out and subsequently getting plastered, and a couple of dece rolls on the mag field attacks to blow up the scout and strider is what turned it from a group we'd rather skip to one we felt like fighting.

It's almost certainly a cadre logo, which means it's temporary and likely something a sibko of cadets is using to identify themselves. The real question is, "which Clan's logo is it"? There're four visible elements. 1) A five-pointed star. Pretty common in Clan iconography, but not universal. I see it as a training facility logo because it's large and serving as a 'mentor' to... 2) What looks to be a π 3) The obvious skull 4) A hard to see snake It's true that the Wolves are boring as poo poo when it comes to their unit logos, but you know who isn't? The Steel Vipers. And you know who the Jade Falcons were really pissed at before and after the Refusal war? The Steel Vipers. It's a logo for Clan Steel Viper's π Training Cadre. Either that, or the artist had a sweet Skull and Snake tattoo design he snuck in because he needed a logo and most Clans didn't have individual unit logos when Mechwarrior 2 came out Edit: on closer inspection, I'm pretty sure the 'spike' on the Pi is actually the tip of the snake's tail. I just wanted to let everyone know I'm not dead, and I'm currently working on something. I just don't have the same time to commit to playing BattleTech every week that I used to, so the current plan is to create a 3151-era Alpha Strike game in another thread. When I post that, I'll probably be closing this thread for a (hopefully temporary) hiatus while I wait to see if life is going to calm down. In the interim, the Alpha Strike thread will be at least as heavy on audience participation as this one (with more things for the audience to vote on in the downtime between missions). I'm not going to lock this thread yet, so you'll all have a chance to yell at me if you need to.

I just wanted to yell "thanks" before it closes.

Well, it's been a long stretch. You should get to take breaks if you want.
