Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 6

In a vote that ended Jan. 6, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Jan. 1.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Ohio boys basketball team of the week: Riverview East – Riverview East improved to 9-1 for the year after beating DePaul Cristo Rey, Felicity-Franklin and Ripley.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: St. Ursula – Responded to a three-game losing streak by going 3-1, beating Finneytown, Woodward and McNicholas.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team of the week: Newport – The Wildcats have won eight of nine, including a 2-0 mark in the Swauger Classic and a 2-1 record in the Cumberland Falls Invitational.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team of the week: Lloyd Memorial – The Juggernauts beat Mason County before going 2-1 in the Stephanie Wilson Memorial Tournament.

Boys winter team of the week: Batavia bowling – Batavia placed second overall in the Wayne Bowl Out and placed two individuals on the All-Tournament team.

Girls winter team of the week: Harrison wrestling – At the Watkins tournament, Harrison scored 211.5 points to claim first place in the invitational.

Ohio big-school boys basketball player of the week: Brady Hardewig, Turpin – His 18-point, 11-rebound performance against Anderson was his second straight double-double of the season. He then collected 28 points, six assists and four rebounds in a one-point win over La Salle.

Ohio small-school boys basketball player of the week: Andrew Ehlers, McNicholas – He averaged 16 points per game at the Innisfree Hotel Beach tournament in Florida, scoring 20 points in the championship game as the Rockets won the tournament.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Maria Klare, St. Ursula – Klare has been a beast on the boards for the Bulldogs, averaging just under 10 rebounds per game as St. Ursula went 2-1 over the past two weeks.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Kylie Jones, Norwood – While the Indians went 2-2 over the past two weeks, Jones averaged 18.5 points per game, including a 24-point performance against Reading. She also had 17 points, 16 rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a win over Williamsburg.

Northern Kentucky boys basketball player of the week: Brayden Moeves, Highlands – He scored 30 points and was 7-of-9 from 3-point range to lead the Bluebirds to a 104-76 win over Fleming County as the team set a new Ninth Region record with 21 3-pointers in a game.

Northern Kentucky girls basketball player of the week: Kayla Overman, Scott – She was named most valuable player of the Pam Browning Classic at Carroll County after averaging 14 points and seven rebounds in three Eagles victories. Overman had a team-high 19 points in the championship game win over Carroll County in overtime.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: Tanner Boyd, Lebanon – He has been on an upward trajectory all season. His latest accomplishment was a 215 single game and 411 series in a win over Little Miami.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Brooklynne Voegele, Reading – The senior bowled a career-high in a three-game series, rolling a 508 at the Warrior Classic on Dec. 18.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler of the week: Aidan Combs, Newport Central Catholic – He had the high game of the week in Division 2 with a 214.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler of the week: Alexis Tignor, Cooper – She had the second-high game of the week in the region with a 223 and second-high series of 402, helping the Jaguars remain undefeated in the conference.

Boys swimmer/diver of the week: Max Reed, Fairfield – The senior won the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle at the 2022 Brave Invitational Dec. 21, 2022, at Miami University.

Girls swimmer/diver of the week: Alivia Scott, Fairfield – The junior won the 100 Individual Medley at the 2022 Brave Invitational Dec. 21, 2022, at Miami University.

Ohio boys wrestler of the week: Wyatt Ferguson, Oak Hills – He pinned four of his five opponents at the GMVWA Holiday Classic, culminating in a first-place finish in the 190-pound weight class. His fastest pin was 54 seconds, and all four came in under three minutes.

Ohio girls wrestler of the week: Jenna Wilson, Lakota West –She bounced back from two losses in the Watkins Invitational to win her final two matches with a 36-second pin and by default.

NKY/IND wrestler of the week: Kaden Lamier, Dixie Heights – The senior won the title at 165 pounds at the NKAC tournament, going 5-0 against a veteran field.

Boys archer of the week: Scotty Heyob, Calvary Christian – The senior finished fourth out of 172 boys in the Covington Catholic tournament with a 278.

Girls archer of the week: Grace Barnett, Dixie Heights – The freshman finished 12th out of 150 girls in the Covington Catholic tournament with a 272.
