Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Sept. 23

In a vote that ended Sept. 23, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Sept. 18.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

The winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Elder – The Panthers ended defending Kentucky Class 6A champion Louisville St. Xavier’s 15-game winning streak with a 24-13 victory.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Lloyd Memorial – The Juggernauts have scored 36 points or more in each of their three wins after topping Bishop Brossart 40-3.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: Milford soccer – Milford is now 10-1 after shutting out Winton Woods 9-0 on Sept. 15.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Milford soccer – The Eagles stayed perfect, beating Winton Woods 7-0 before a 4-0 road victory at Oak Hills.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Holy Cross soccer – After not scoring a goal in four matches, Holy Cross went 2-1 over the week with a 5-1 win over Holmes and a 5-0 shutout of Calvary Christian.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Conner volleyball – The Lady Cougars reached 10 wins after beating Bishop Brossart 3-1 before handling Villa Madonna in a 2-0 win.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Grant Hensley, Lawrenceburg – He finished fifth at the South Dearborn Invitational to lead the Tigers.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Lauren Agner, Lawrenceburg – She led the Tigers by finishing 12th at the South Dearborn Invitational.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: William McLane, Summit Country Day – He won the Troy Twilight Invite Gray Division Sept. 17 with a time of 16:48.80, helping Summit Country Day to a first-place team finish.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Kate Stiens, Walnut Hills – The senior won the Milford XC Invitational big-school division Sept. 17 with a time of 19:13.50.

Field hockey player of the week: Glady Hill, Summit Country Day – The sophomore had an impressive 15 saves in the Monday night loss to Oakwood. Her coach calls her the core of their defense and a definite player to watch this year.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Zack Gutekunst, Elder – The senior defensive back had six tackles and an interception in Elder’s 24-13 win over Louisville St. Xavier.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Alex Ritzie, Badin – The junior quarterback went 23-of-27 for 300 yards and three touchdowns in Badin’s 23-0 win over Ross.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Owen Leen, Covington Catholic – He rushed for 150 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries against Beechwood as the Colonels defeated the Tigers 31-14 to improve to 4-1.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Mikey Schutte, Elder – Schutte shot a one-under-par 35 to be the overall medalist in the GCL quad match, setting a new school record at TPC River’s Bend.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Cameron Manning, Milford – Manning was medalist with her 39 at Mason Golf Center when the Eagles bested Little Miami on Sept. 14.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys golfer of the week: Nathan Resing, Covington Catholic – He won the NKAC Division I individual title.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Killian Riley, Walnut Hills – He had two goals each in wins over Loveland and Roger Bacon. He also had an assist in the latter win.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Logan Kent, Talawanda – He scored all three goals in a win over Northwest, then added two more in a win over Mount Healthy.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Ana Manning, Milford – The junior forward had two goals and an assist in a win over Winton Woods, then added two more goals in a win over Oak Hills.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Kendall Campbell, Harrison – She had two goals and three assists for the Wildcats, who outscored their opponents 16-2.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Cole Bishop, Beechwood – He made school history by recording the first varsity goal against Covington Catholic in Beechwood program history. This was the sixth game between the teams. Beechwood lost 5-2 to CovCath after losing 2-0 in two games last year and by a combined score of 29-0 form 2016-18.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Carly Tranter, Notre Dame - The junior defender had one goal vs Holy Cross in a 4-0 win and two goals vs. Beechwood in a 4-1 win. Both games were district seeding wins.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Anna Borchers, Harrison – In her lone match, she defeated an opponent from Edgewood 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Audrey Fouss & Vivian Kissmer, New Richmond – They beat their opponent from Goshen 6-2, 6-1 to improve their record to 7-2, including a 4-1 mark in the Southern Buckeye Conference.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Taylor Grubbs, Seton – The junior had 21 assists and 16 digs in Seton’s four-set win over Mercy McAuley.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Rachel Moore, Williamsburg – In a pair of wins last week, Moore totaled 66 total assists, including a career-high 38 in a three-set victory over East Clinton. Moore leads the SBAAC in assists.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Ava Tilden, Notre Dame – She led NDA with 12 kills and four blocks in a big district win over Holy Cross, 3-0.

Girls water polo player of the week: Ayla Fidanza, Sycamore – The captain led the Lady Aves to a sudden-death overtime third place finish in this year’s Ohio Cup girls water polo tournament. In her dominating efforts, she bested the competition with 18 goals, 5 assists and 22 steals over the 6-game weekend of play.
