Obituary

Remsen – Naomi “Nan” Zacek, 80, passed away on September 20, 2023 at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville.

She was born in Plattsburgh, NY on October 19, 1942 a daughter of Harry and Elsie King Decker. She graduated from Holland Patent Central School in 1961. Upon graduating from high school she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps.  Later she attended barber school in Utica, NY and was the first woman barber in Central New York.   She truly enjoyed barbering and socializing with her customers over the years.   Nan later moved her career to the New York State Corrections system when she became a vocational barber instructor at the prison.

Nan was a fun-loving woman who loved music and dancing.   She enjoyed going out dancing with friends and was especially fond of square dancing.   She was a fan of baseball and loved watching the Mets games on TV.  Her favorite companions were her cats.  She always had a couple around and they provided great companionship for her.

Nan is survived by one daughter, Michelle (Richard) Synakowski; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Michael) DeBiase, Ashley Martinez, and Matthew Synakowski and seven great-grandchildren, Abigail, Ethan, Jacob, Halle, Gracelynn, Kaylee, and Mikayla.  Nan was devoted to her family.  She especially loved spending time with her “babies”. Nan was predeceased by her parents, her two sisters Patricia Singer and Georgianna Humpf, and a beloved companion, Walter Seelman.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Sunset Nursing Home for the love and care showed to Nan while she was with them.
