What is the highest dosage of pergolide you have used with no complications other than temporary decrease in appetite.

Thomas was on 12mg compounded before I euthanized him this fall. Never had any side effects from it. No veil ever. Would have gone higher if I could have afforded it.

Just checking, as I've started Prascend only a few weeks ago and don't know if I'll be upping the dose in the future, do you want my vote in this poll now?

My mare is currently on 20.75 mg compounded pergolide and doing very well.  Never any issues with the veil when I have to increase dosage in the fall.
Unfortunately, I will probably have to euthanize her next fall, as the pergolide has just gotten too expensive.  However, without the knowledge I gained from this group, she would have been gone many years ago already.

The 2 mg dose is in two different answers.  AND what about lower doses for ponies/minis?

Hi Sandy,

Dosage does not depend on weight/size of the animal.

Good catch. If it's over 2 mg, go with the second choice.

Starting dose for ponies or minis is often less than 1 mg but the correct dose is the one that controls ACTH and that is rarely under 1 mg.

I marked 2mg. for Woody but we are fairly new to dealing with Cushings so this database is very important for his future!

I chose the lower 2mg dose. But even though Monte has had some side affects they are tolerable considering the alternative. His biggest issue is the rough and thin hair coat that 3 mg daily causes.

I can’t vote in this poll because my horses dose has been .5 mg for the past 1.5 years and he is doing great so far. His symptoms of spookiness are gone. He never went thru the veil or had laminitis. Great appetite. The only thing is his coat hasn’t completely shed out the past 2 springs and I have to clip the last little bit. I retest every April. Will see what his numbers are and also see how he sheds out this year!

Please make my vote X 3 for over 5 mg compounded.

My 25 yo gets 22mg, the 20 yo gets 8 mg and the 15 yo gets 10 mg.

They are all sound, healthy and full of energy. I am beyond thankful for Dr. K

I so appreciate this group! I have learned so much about IR management and PPID from the posted questions and the moderator answers.

I have 2 equids on pergolide. My horse Julie is on 2.5mg compounded pergolide but does the compounded drug have same efficacy as the manufactured BI Prascend?
Her dose increased from 2mg about 8 months ago. For the past 2 years I have also supplemented with 0.5mg Prascend on top of her compounded dose for the seasonal rise. This seems to have prevented a fall laminitis these past 2 years.

My pony Taiko remains on 0.5mg compounded pergolide but this past seasonal rise I supplemented with 0.25mg Prascend.

There are study results in our files showing that compounded pergolide is just as good as the BI version.  You can also do a search of the message archives although that might be a bit more complicated to find relevant emails.

Not been able to get over .75 mg without adverse side effects unrelated to veil.

Will vote the first option.

I am confused about the dosage information to provide.  When I used Pet Pharmacy the prescription was expressed as C-Pergolide Mesylate 5mg capsule.  When the pharmacy changed over to Avrio the prescription expression became C-Pergolide 4.2 mg capsule.  I have called and have been assured this is the same strength as Pet Pharmacy provided.  But which one do you want on the survey? And why is it so confusing?  I am increasing his dosage currently by .5 mg so what prescription strength should my veterinarian request if this increase should result in a low ACTH and hopefully insulin?

Thank you,

I want the 4.2 mg dose. That the dose of actual pergolide. The 5 mg is pergolide mesylate.  This is why we suggest prescriptions for compounders be written this way:

X mg of pergolide base from pergolide mesylate.

Where do we vote?  One of my mares is on 12mg liquid pergolide and the other is getting 8mg and may need more after I test.
