Evangelical Christian leader John MacArthur accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of “gross blaspheme” Thursday after the Democrat politician quoted Jesus on billboards promoting the slaughter of unborn babies in abortions.

Faithwire reports MacArthur, the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, published an open letter to Newsom this week in response to the governor’s numerous actions to expand abortions.

“My concern, Governor Newsom, is that your own soul lies in grave, eternal peril,” MacArthur wrote. “You will stand in the presence of the Holy God who created you, who is your Judge, and He will demand that you give an account for how you have flouted His authority in your governing, and how you have twisted His own Holy Word to rationalize it.”

Newsom, a pro-abortion Democrat, has been working aggressively to expand abortions in direct cooperation with the abortion industry. This week, he signed a dozen pro-abortion bills into law, and his budget includes $200 million specifically for new abortion projects.

In September, the governor shocked Christians by paying for billboards in pro-life states that quote scripture to encourage women to come to California for abortions.

“Want an abortion? California is ready to help,” one billboard states. Beneath the words are a quote from Jesus from Mark 12:21: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.” It also advertises a new, taxpayer-funded California government website that promotes abortions.

MacArthur said he felt compelled to respond after seeing news about the billboards, calling them an “act of gross blaspheme.”

“In mid-September, you revealed to the entire nation how thoroughly rebellious against God you are when you sponsored billboards across America promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13–16; Isaiah 45:9–12),” the pastor wrote.

“You further compounded the wickedness of that murderous campaign with a reprehensible act of gross blasphemy, quoting the very words of Jesus from Mark 12:31 as if you could somehow twist His meaning and arrogate His name in favor of butchering unborn infants,” MacArthur continued.

He told Newsom that Jesus’ greatest command was to “love God,” and no one can follow that command while “aiding in the murder of His image-bearers.”

MacArthur said he and many others are praying for Newsom to repent and turn his life to Christ.

“Please respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued all your life, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it (as has been your pattern),” he concluded.

Other pastors and bishops also have become more vocal lately in admonishing supposedly Christian politicians like President Joe Biden and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who support killing unborn babies in abortions and want to force taxpayers to pay for them.

Last fall, San Francisco Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone called out Pelosi for supporting a pro-abortion bill that amounts to “child sacrifice.” He said the Women’s Health Protection Act is what “one would expect from a devout Satanist, not a devout Catholic.”

California aborted approximately 154,000 unborn babies in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Many expect those numbers will grow as a result of Newsom’s actions within the past several years.

California already has very few limits on abortion, and it forces taxpayers to pay for them. A new law slated to go into effect next year will force all public colleges and universities to provide abortions on campus. It has the highest number of abortion facilities in the country at 168, according to a new ANSIRH study.
