Flight of the Vampire 5K

Dear runner and walker:

This is Halloween, and so we encourage you to dress up for the run – a best dressed prize of $25 will be given to the best dressed adult and child.

We also hope to have a special exhibit of clay hands (the silent, internationally recognized, sign, for “I need help”! You will also receive arm bracelet and sticker to recognize Polio as a continuing threat.  

Race start is 9 AM - 170 of you will be running.

Online sign-ups have closed – friends can still register to run on Saturday, but they will not be timed.

A limited number of walk-ups will be accepted, but they are not part of the race formally from an awards perspective.

Road conditions: The City is doing work along Railroad on the new path. Please be careful on the uneven pavement.

Weather: It's the mountains, so who knows. If you bring a jacket and don't end up needing it, we will put it inside the DEPOT - do note though that it will not be secured, so don't bring your best one, just in case

Packet pick-ups: You can pick up your Bib and Shirt on Friday from 5-6 PM or from 8 AM on Saturday - At the DEPOT on Railroad Ave.

Parking: The DEPOT has a lot of parking available, and you can also park near the License center on Commerce Ave. Please do not park in the warehouse lots as these will be in constant use and you may be towed.

Weather and water: the weather looks perfect early but bring plenty of water with you.

We have water at the two-mile mark - manned by some of our ROTC cadets - so say hello to them and .... and thank Martha for use of her driveway - she'll be sitting on her Porch. We have water bottles at the end, as well.

Plastic waste goes in the Trash cans provided, please.

Shirts: The shirts are Epic - sizes may be an issue - if you get the wrong size, let us know and we will organize an exchange with you when we get an extra supply.

Toilets: please use the rest rooms in the DEPOT, itself.

COVID precautions: We are following the CDC guidelines. If you don't feel well on Saturday, then please stay home.

if you have any underlying health issues, then please wear a mask at the start and finish. We will have some available for your use along with hand sanitizer.

Timing and distance: Like all things, the cost of third-party timing for this, a mid-sized race, at around 180 runners, is out of control - so we are doing it ourselves. If you are an avid runner, please bring your own watch, just to be sure. We do have a timing clock, this time, as well. Please bear with us on results by category etc. do take a little while to tabulate.

I am told the course is a little longer than the prescribed 5K, and that the end of the Bike Path is where you should time yourself if the exact distance is important to you.

Emergencies: The Fire department staff are at a few spots around the course (please say thank you to them) and in an ATV behind the last runners.

Course Marshals will call 911 for help as well. Please stay calm at the side of the road and we will get help to you. The Ambulance service know we are out there.

 Thanks for your support – all of the net proceeds go back in to the community.

 Our Rosman Rumble 5K (in Rosman) and the flattest race in Transylvania was postponed due to Hurricane IAN – but the shirts were already produced – and so if you signed up for the Rumble we have a shirt for you at the DEPOT.
