He's back tonight! Newsletter for Tues. 3/8
Woohoo! Ok, I'll miss the live show but I'll catch the rerun!

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Dan Rather finishes up his long stint as Anchorman tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, Walter Cronkite hardly waxes poetic regarding Rather's
departure...
Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather's predecessor at the "CBS Evening News,"
said Monday that Rather's replacement by Bob Schieffer was overdue.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7122636/

But the idea that Rather is leaving under a cloud... is bunk. The man
has a decades-long career, some mistakes included.
The press has largely missed the point on the National Guard story
anyway...

Keith returns tonight, for a broadcast only Keith can do.

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count
is never complete without you. Join us.

U.S. counterintelligence officials are increasingly concerned that Al
Qaeda sympathizers or operatives may have tried to get jobs at the CIA
and other U.S. agencies in an effort to spy on American counterterrorist
efforts.

The younger brother of Michael Jackson's accuser described for jurors
in graphic detail Monday how he twice saw the pop star fondle the child
while the young boy lay sleeping in Jackson's bed at his Neverland
Ranch. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7118247/

The results of a CT scan done on King Tut's mummy indicate the boy king
was not murdered, but may have suffered a badly broken leg shortly
before his death at age 19 _ a wound that could have become infected,
Egypt's top archaeologist said Tuesday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7125600/

Former President Clinton will undergo a medical procedure Thursday to
remove fluid and scar tissue from his left chest cavity, his office
announced Tuesday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7127096/

That's some of what we're working on for tonight's show.

Finally,
Two women who bared their breasts in protest were arrested and dragged
away as Britain's Prince Charles arrived for an official function
Tuesday in New Zealand's capital. One woman climbed atop a wall, bared her
chest and shouted "shame, shame" as Charles walked toward the City Art
Gallery doorway. The woman, exposed from the waist up, was grabbed by
two uniformed police officers, arrested and marched from the scene as the
prince was led into the building.

The women were protesting the monarchy, not the wedding, by the way.

More:
Nearly 500,000 pro-Syrian protesters waved flags and chanted
anti-American slogans in a central Beirut square Tuesday, answering a nationwide
call by the militant Shiite Muslim Hezbollah group for a demonstration
to counter weeks of massive rallies demanding Syrian forces leave
Lebanon. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7023538/

DNA samples were pulled from a cigarette butt found in the home where a
federal judge's mother and husband were shot to death, but tests did
not match any known criminal profile in the United States, according to
published report. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7127586/

The last increase in the minimum wage was in 1996. And if Republicans
now in control of Congress have their way, don't look for another one
anytime soon. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7127179/

Young blacks have grown markedly less willing to join the Army, citing
fear of being sent to fight a war in Iraq they don't believe in,
according to unpublicized studies for the military that suggest the Army is
entering a prolonged recruiting slump.

A spate of instant message worms released over the last few days has
some antivirus researchers concerned: With e-mail viruses less effective
than before, virus writers, they say, are now turning their attention
to the popular - and not very secure - chat tools used by millions.

1. "a broadcast only Keith can do"
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 01:47 PM by gkhouston
how snarky is that going to be? I wonder what sort of clips we're going to get for our Rather retrospective? And what happened to CBS' idea of going for a younger, hipper news anchor, possibly a team of news anchors? Schieffer is definitely your father's Oldsmobile.

3. I so hope it will include Poppy's blow-up in 1988.
That was epic. Saw it live. It was a "Zell" moment (which I also saw live!).

2. Should we be worried about the last item?

And what the hell is the purpose in WRITING VIRUSES? Are these people freepers or permanent disruptors (as if there's a difference).

4. They're bored kids, mostly.
And no, this isn't a chat tool, it's an HTML web page. Can't catch anything here AFAIK! :hi:

6. But that's why I avoid clicking on links, if I can help it.
And why I wish more people would post a bit of the text, so you can decide if you want to go there or not.

I have got a few virii from here - but probably from the links. They were more spyware and worms, though. Ugh.

5. ever notice how some middle-aged guys buy sports cars
to ah, selectively enhance their physique? (Hey, didn't get locked! That was close.) Viruses are sort of the online equivalent of that for younger (usually) men. It's sort of a "look at clever me" ego trip.

As far as being worried about it -- I don't use IM because I've always thought it was too vulnerable, so this news doesn't surprise me a lot. Yeah, it's a new target, and it's going to get exploited a lot in the next year or two.

9. My theory on computer viruses...
I think they're created by the virus protection companies.

What better way to promote your product than to write a virus that only you can protect against?

Did you ever notice how fast they come out with a patch?

10. good point.
Like in "The Net" with Sandra Bullock. The "Gatekeeper" security system was programming backdoor glitches that allowed access to highly sensitive systems...

I use AntiVir - it's a freebie from a German website. Updates every two weeks. The scan-disc program is called "Luke Filewalker." :)

7. I hope the report on Clinton is a thorough one.
It's ironic that a man with such a good heart should have a heart condition. I was alarmed by the way he looked. Of course, as soon as he started to talk I was somewhat relieved.

He simply MUST survive.

8. This is a show (and a host) I can sink my teeth into
I was gasping and "ooohing" and "aaaahing" when I read the newsletter - I mean, how often do you have a show that includes the popping the Freeper community about how they DID NOT run Dan Rather off, information about how lax our security really is (because Bush is an idiot - my opinion) and the truth about the decrease in military recruiting, all peppered with Bill Clinton AND King Tut?!

I cannot wait for this show!
