Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, March 8

In a vote that ended March 8, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through March 3.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for winter winners through Feb. 9 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-April.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Badin – After a 3-8 start to the season, Badin is now 15-10 after beating Clinton-Massie 61-32 and Fenwick 54-30 in the Division II postseason.

Ohio girls basketball team: Mount Notre Dame – Mount Notre Dame topped Walnut Hills 55-47 and Wayne 62-40 to clinch a district championship.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Newport – Newport is 29-3 overall and 36th District champs after topping Bellevue 75-26 and Highlands 63-48.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Campbell County – Campbell County’s 47-37 win over Scott gave the Camels the 37th District title and their 20th win of the season.

Boys winter team: La Salle wrestling – The Lancers won the Division I district championship with 169.5 team points and three individual champions.

Girls winter team: Harrison wrestling – The Wildcats secured the regional championship with 225 points in front of their home crowd on March 3.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Spence Davidson, Lebanon – He had 16 points and nine rebounds in a win over Northmont in the Division I sectional tournament.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Cooper Ollis, Badin – He had 26 points including five 3-pointers, plus nine rebounds, in a 54-30 win over Fenwick in a Division II sectional final.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Laila Harrison, Mount Notre Dame – She scored a career-high 25 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars past Wayne in the district championship game.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Emma Prus, Madeira – She came off the bench to contribute 10 points and seven rebounds in a sectional tournament win over Summit Country Day.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Jay Bilton, Simon Kenton – The junior was named MVP of the 32nd District Tournament after leading the Pioneers to wins over Williamstown and Walton-Verona in the tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Jaelyn Jones, Ryle – The sophomore had 16 points and four rebounds in a district tournament win over Cooper, then had 21 points on five three-pointers in the first round of the regional tournament.

Ohio boys bowler: Quentin Morgan, La Salle – The senior shot a perfect 300 in the Division I district tournament and finished third with a 722 series (300-216-206) to qualify for this weekend’s state tournament as an individual.

Ohio girls bowler: Mackenzie Pyle, Wilmington – The freshman finished fifth in the Division I district tournament with a 638 (207-204-224), helping the Hurricane finish third in the team standings and qualify for this weekend’s state tournament.

Gymnast: Brooklyn Scheiman, Anderson – Scheiman competed in two individual events and the all-around competition at the OHSAA State Gymnastics Championship. She finished 23rd on the uneven parallel bars and was 26th in the floor event to finish 28th out of 36 gymnasts in the all-around standings.

Big-school boys wrestler: Matt Kowalski, Springboro – Kowalski secured three pins in four matches, including the finals, at the 190-pound bracket of the Division I district tournament.

Ohio small-school boys wrestler: Wyatt Hinton, Norwood – The senior pinned his first two opponents before a 3-0 semifinal and 3-1 finals win at the Division III district tournament at 138 pounds.

Ohio girls wrestler: Camryn Gresham, Lakota East – The freshman won the regional championship at 100 pounds with three pins before a 7-1 finals victory.

Boys indoor track & field athlete: Nathan Ruth, Bishop Brossart – He won the Class 1A 800-meter run, took third place in the 1,500-meter run and anchored the state champion 4-x-800-meter relay team.

Girls indoor track & field athlete: Hayden Harlan, St. Henry – She won the Class 1A high jump state championship with a height of five feet, three inches.
