Protect the Churches in Bridgeport's Historic Washington Park Community
Why this petition matters
This neighborhood is both part of the East Bridgeport Historic District, a National Register location, and the local Pembroke City Historic District. Currently, we are applying for $6.8 million from the Community Investment Fund 2030 Grant with Preservation Connecticut, the state-wide nonprofit organization for historic preservation. However, we need support from you to show the state the people care about this project.
These funds will be used towards capital needs projects like new roofs, updated facilities, mortar repointing, and window restoration. Additionally, these projects would invest money right back into Bridgeport, as we would hire from the community when making these repairs.
Unfortunately, these irreplaceable cultural resources are at risk, threatened by weather and time. Often, the churches can’t even be used when it’s raining. Along with regular church activities, this makes it very hard to host our usual soup kitchens, community outreach programs, and after school activities.
