Macintosh Classic Shooter ‘Marathon’ Returns (Sorry, It’s Just on the PS5)

Do you remember the 1994 Apple Macintosh first-person shooter “Marathon?” Well, it’s making a comeback. Unfortunately, it’s not coming to the Mac but is instead headed for the PS5 as a “spiritual reboot.” The original version of Marathon was a first-person shooter similar to “Wolfenstein 3D” and used an early 3D gaming engine.

“Marathon” game director Christopher Barrett says this new game respects the original title’s mythology, story, and themes. He says that while it isn’t a sequel, it “certainly belongs in the same universe.”

“It’s our aim to create something incredible both for players who are completely new to the Marathon world and for those that have been waiting years for more stories in the Marathon universe,” said Barrett. “You don’t need to know anything about Marathon to understand or play this game, but if you do, we’re making the experience with references and deep cuts you’ll recognize.”

The game lacks a single-player campaign. Instead, the game is built around persistent world-building in a player-versus-player world. Players will be able to affect the world around them, discover new zones, and more. Changes players make will remain intact for future matches.

Bungie hasn’t yet announced a release date for the game, so PS5 owners will need to keep an eye out for more news.
