Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Oct. 6

In a vote that ended Oct. 6, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Oct. 1.

Fall winners will receive certificates through the athletic departments about midway through the season. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of the season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners for the 2023-2024 high school sports season.

Editor's note: There are two winners in the Northern Kentucky boys soccer ballot because the ballot was inadvertently left open past the 4 p.m. deadline. A time-stamped screenshot confirms a different winner just after 4 p.m. than the time it was actually closed, a one-vote difference. To be fair to both families, both boys will win.

Ohio football team: Wilmington – After falling by three points to undefeated Clinton-Massie last week, the Hurricane bounced back with a 36-7 victory at Batavia.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Ludlow – The Panthers rolled Bellevue 56-14, moving to .500 for the season at 3-3.

Boys fall team: Anderson cross country – At the Sycamore Stoneberger Invitational, Anderson had five runners in the top 10, including the first-place runner, to finish atop the leaderboard with 21 points.

Girls fall team: Milford cross country – Milford scored a 39 at the Sycamore Stoneberger Invitational to finish first in the event.

Ohio boys cross country: Ronan Wolfer, Loveland – He finished in 15th place at the Centerville championship race with a time of 16:02.70.

Ohio girls cross country: Caroline Murnan, Loveland – She finished in ninth place at the Centerville championship race with a time of 18:24.80.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country: Adam Kolar, Villa Madonna – He took 19th place at the Centerville varsity race with a time of 16:49.80.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country: Lena Schroeder, Villa Madonna – She was the top Kentucky finisher at the Centerville black race, crossing the line in 20:32.70.

Ohio big-school football: Julius Vorbroker, Loveland – He had one of the Tigers’ three interceptions, returning one 79 yards for a touchdown. He also had two catches for 50 yards and a score as the Tigers beat Turpin 49-23.

Ohio small-school football: Will Rapp, Bethel-Tate – In the Tigers’ 38-0 win over Clermont Northeastern, he returned two fumbles for touchdowns from 39 and 73 yards out, had an interception, and posted five tackles on defense.

Northern Kentucky football: Mason Baesel, Cooper – He had four tackles against Conner, two of which were for a loss.

Field hockey: Sierra Smith, Walnut Hills – The junior scored two goals this week, one in each game the team played. She recently came back from injury and quickly made her presence known on the field. Her leadership was apparent with the sudden uptick in scoring opportunities during the games.

Ohio boys golf: Finley Bartlett, Wyoming – Bartlett shot a 67 at The Mill Course, winning the Division II sectional on Sept. 27 by two strokes.

Ohio girls golf: Taylor Zoz, Badin – The Badin freshman shot an 82, finishing tied for first and becoming the first Badin golfer to medal at sectionals.

Northern Kentucky boys golf: Caleb Eaglin, Newport Central Catholic – Eaglin shot a two-over-par 74 in the KHSAA state first-round tournament, good for a sixth-place tie and the highest local finish.

Northern Kentucky girls golf: Eva Maley, Cooper – Maley had a three-over-par 75 in the KHSAA state first round, finishing in a tie for lowest score overall.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Shaun Dickerson, Lakota East – The junior had three goals and an assist in a 6-1 win over Princeton.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: Nicholas Geiser, McNicholas – He scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over rival Anderson.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Aubrey Baker, West Clermont – The freshman had two goals and two assists in a 7-0 win over Winton Woods.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Josie Pickens, Finneytown – The senior had three goals and three assists in a 6-0 win over St. Bernard-Elmwood Place.

Northern Kentucky boys soccer: Maddox Pemberton, Cooper – He scored the only goal in a 1-0 win by the Jaguars over Conner in the 33rd District semifinals.

Northern Kentucky boys soccer: Miguel Kennedy, Holmes – He had three goals and three assists in an 11-1 win, then played in goal against Paris and posted the shutout in a 3-0 win.

Northern Kentucky girls soccer: Milana Arevalo, Conner – She scored the game-winner against Dixie Heights then scored two against Boone County in Conner’s win in the 33rd District Tournament. She now has 12 goals this season, second on the team.

Girls singles tennis player: Libby Goedde, Ursuline – She won her match against Walnut Hills at first singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Girls doubles tennis team: Cary Holliday/Bailey Wheeler, Wilmington – The juniors won the first doubles championship of the American Division of the Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference.

Ohio big-school volleyball: Emsley Venard, St. Ursula – She had 43 assists and 11 digs in a four-set win over Mercy McAuley.

Ohio small-school volleyball: Brynn Bryant, Wilmington – She had 24 digs and 21 kills against Alter, followed by 14 digs and 14 kills against Clinton-Massie. The senior had a third double-double of 20 digs and 14 kills in a loss to Wayne.

Northern Kentucky volleyball: Julia Grace, Notre Dame – The junior had 43 digs, 10 assists and nine aces in five matches at the Asics Challenge in Chicago.

Boys water polo: Jacob Suh, Sycamore – During the Aviators’ win over Milford Suh secured 6 steals and had 2 assists.
